Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Possible Series - Test Shots

Okay, so I know that fan series, based around the whole Thomas franchise, are commonplace. I do fancy having a go at one, however if I did it would have to be a high standard, as I have become quite a perfectionist! A few test shots are just below, nothing special but certainly adjusting the camera right in order to film perhaps not whole episodes, but extracts, and with realistic versions of the characters opposed to the toy-like creations of the Television Series.       Source

I'm Not Committed to Building this, You Understand...

In a previous posting , I mentioned trams . I am trying quite hard to be a good boy and finish things off ,not take on new projects and commitments; but despite my best intentions there have been stirrings on the tramway front.   It started when something caused me to look at the Street Level Models website. I spotted a card kit for Manor House tram station (LT), and that started something stirring. Wasn't Manor House the northern terminus of one of the Kingsway Subway routes ? It was

Taking the (idea from) Mickey...

Good morning,   Having submitted my entry for the 2011 diorama comp (just need to set up the summary topic) my thoughts now turn to the next few months of modelling.   Whilst I am obviously still keen to carry on with this layout, I have decided to spend between now and Christmas revisiting my 'Kyle in a Boxfile' layout. I never finished the station building and whilst at it a number of things need doing...and redoing, for example the backscene and bringing the layout up to scratch. I always

poor running locos

had my box of stuff out today to see what worked and what didn't. never realised that i had so many locos chipped for zero1 now if only i knew what the numbers for each was the only locos i could find that would run on the old DC controller was a Hornby GWR Pannier tank and my detailed Hornby 47490 in large logo as Bristol Bath Road. the tank was too small to fit a chip and i never bothered with the 47 the tank took ages to get to run smoothly, i had to drag it round the track with another

76009 the roll out

So 76009 has finally rolled out the paint-shop and had its final fittings applied. So it is already to be pressed into service. It's first outing is scheduled to be at The Tring show next weekend. http://www.tdmrc.co....adRail2011.html   Here are some pictures of the finished engine.     I am quite pleased with the pipe work around the boiler. I purchased Alan Gibson fittings, mainly because I didn't realise that Comet did these as well and in a pack. Some of the Gibson parts I c

The Bridge in the Middle

No heat wave here in the west of Scotland. In the meantime ballasting has passed under 'the bridge in the middle'.     Two pictures looking up and down the line.     And a more general view which highlights where some of the 'civil engineering' works have still to be finished off.     The bridge itself lifts off to alow access to the tracks beneath. Further details are provided here in my photogallery.   http://www.rmweb.co....789-the-bridge/   I have also added a picture f

Livery Consistancy

Good Evening,   I've been fiddling about on the layout having a 'runnng session' working out some tweaks for the track layout and what works and doesn't work. Half-way through the afternoon I felt a change of era, from BR (S) to Southern Railway - perfect as it gave me the opportunity to run my new A1X Terrier from Hornby - the first Terrier released in a 'Mainland' Southern Railway livery - all previous Southern Liveried Terriers have been based on Isle of Wight examples - with the wrong bunk

compartments, 3 - and corridor rails

*very* grumpy now - prepared text for this post, went to attach photos, and lost it.   For some reason, Hornby didn't print the corridor rails. microstrip 20 thou by 10 thou seems the right size, painted silver. I had thought I could hold this in place with bluetack, then use styrene cement. Unfortunately, although the piece to the left of the door (on corridor side) looks ok, the rail came away with the bluetack between the windows, and on the other side of the door it came away completely an

compartments, 2

Continuing grumpily (ooh, I do hate having to learn new workflows - I much prefer regular threads where attached pics appear in the preview and can have commenting text added), this is what they look like after painting.   Rail grey wall and second-class bulkheads, purple upholstery mixed from railmatch crimson and (less) rail blue - I think I'll use faded rail blue next time, and aluminium rack supports although those aren't noticeable. White antimacassars brushed on. For the moment, no

Bodging a blue VEP

For me, there are several inadequacies of the blue Hornby VEP, but since it's a lot better than I will ever manage with an MJT brass kit, I figured I'd better put my money where my mouth is.   First up are the compartment sides. My skills are limited, and I don't have any quantity of spare 1st class BR Mk1 compartment interiors, so I've gone for cutting an aperture in the solid side, then putting a piece of 10 thou plasticard over it. I figured that cutting a series of rectangular windows woul

Chagford - Building structures for tramways and light railways

Hi All   I have recently been building a platform for a friends N gauge layout. This is a colonel HF Stephens line and the platform is composed entirely of timber. A major problem with this is to make the model strong enough to withstand being transported and not have the timbers, in scale terms, too large.   When you consider 1mm equates to 6" in the prototype, I feel that the size of the timbers used in the fence are oversize, but I am pleased with the overall effect. I need however to com

Nellie needs a shed.

Hi All,   This is the first blog post thingy from me. Anway, some of you will know that I recently built a Smallbrook Studios kit of Rowland Emetts "Nellie". This kit has been one of the most enjoyable I have built and led me onto thinking about building a layout to run it on. Before I start commiting myself to the layout (which will be called Wylam's Wonkey Waggon Works) I thought I best start with a few buildings to see if my scratch building (and imagination) are up to it!   Obviously, N

Morfa Bach ( A proposed new Cambrian micro layout)

After a couple of weeks thinking and doodling with bits of paper I have come up with this..........     It is liable to change again of course, but you get the general idea.   I was too late for the 2011 challenge but still need a new photographic diorama, though I think I will end up turning this into a layout in it's own right.   The proposed project will be about 4ft x 1 ft and will have the provision for a fiddle yard at both ends.   The scale is 4mm/ft 00 gauge. the track will b

intro

S'pose I'd better introduce myself. I came back to model railways about 4 years ago - initially for (mostly continental) narrow gauge. Trouble was, when I was last a modeller (early 1970s when I was a teenager), what I really wanted was Southern EMUs like I saw on the real railway. No money for what became the Phoenix 4-COR kit, and inadequate skills to try to make my own. And then Bachmann brought out the phase I 4-CEP.   Now, I've got adequate cash, but my skills are still limited. So, thes

Barclay class 06 - A start on detailing the body

I've recently been making progress with detailing the Barclay.   Some handrail knobs are included in the kit, but I noticed from photos that the Barclays have a quite distinctive, very plain, tube instead of the more "normal" shape. I made these out of microbore copper tube drilled through. By filing all the ends to length together whilst threaded onto a piece of handrail wire I got quite consistent results.   I used a combination of card and masking tape to hold these in place whilst I

The beginning.....

IN the beginning, there was an oval on the carpet. Then I had the classic 8x4 double loop with some twiddly bits, which was never finished. After that, I progressed to a layout along two walls of the room, it was supposed to be a shelf layout but the baseboards expanded during the building processes and a loop with impossibly tight curves appeared. It to was never finished and became essentially a huge, messy building site.   I was 15 by this time, and I discovered girls. (When I say g

Not much happened

Sorry folks, very little has been happening at Honley Tank, with the possible exception of preparing the five brake vans, the K3 & the ‘Crab’ for entering the competition at Manchester show. What with involvement with Expo EM North at Slaithwaite taking up a long weekend and then Manchester MRS’s ‘do’ this coming weekend, there’s been little time left for actual modelling. Actually, as I write, I’m only hoping to be at the MMRS show. A harsh dose of sinusitis has had me laid-up for best pa

Books

110928_cornish_int_IMG_1342_02_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Cornish Interlude (working title) update.   Railways enthusiasts generally love books, and I am no exception, needing little excuse to buy another for the collection. They are never idle purchases, they get looked at over and over again to inspire my model making. I think this is why I have far too many ideas, the purchase of a new book inevitably resulting in the back of an envelope sketch for some kind of mini or not

Barnham Signal Box Update Sept 2011

I have just come across this web site and viewed with interest the many blogs concerning the Barnham Signal Box and the fire back in November 2010. As the Chariman of the restoration group I thought i would take this opportunity to update everyone on our progress. Since the fire, which destroyed somewhere in the region of 40+% of the box, work has progressed well. Our first task, once the insurers had paid out (this was no small task as they delayed payment for four months) was to bring in a

Bringing my bus collection into line

Having more or less "locked down" my railway collections, I'm turning my attention to what model buses I should possess to accompany them. I've moved a fair few times over the years but the buses I own in OO haven't always tied up with the trains that I own, e.g. few trains representing West Yorkshire. I'm still feeling my way towards a new policy for collecting model buses, but must admit I prefer half-cabs in general and Bristol, Daimler, Leyland and MCW (Metrobus) rear-engined types. If a

They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
    • No but a modeller freind has owned and restored 3 early T models. Also I was draged to many Veteran car rallys in the 1960's. My dad being a fan.I have owned 50 cars and 24 m/cycles but only one car and one m/cycle were vintage, a1925 Bullnose Morris and a 1926 AJS bike. I have riden a few veteran bikes in rallys though., great fun.
