Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Demolition!

nevard_110101_catcott_IMG_1739_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Catcott Crossing, September 1966. It's just 6 months after closure and the demolition contractors have already started to dismantle the railway. Most of the railway buildings on 'The Branch' survived the demolition men, with many of then ending up in private hands, unlike the Bath to Bournemouth line which ended up losing well over half its stations to the swinging iron ball.   It's interesting now as to whether the same

Bachmann 58802 Devious Diesel - Review

I've decided to take a fully fledged look at the latest offering in Bachmann Train's Thomas range, namely "58802 Devious Diesel." Whilst some may look at this review and argue with some points, I feel that all points given are valid and address issues that are apparent on the model. I must also apologise in advance for the quality of the photographs included, I'm afraid my camera is not a fan of the dark nights we are now experiencing.   With both Hornby (OO/HO) and Lionel (O) making models of

Activity on the West bank

A quick update. A little progress with the Morfa Bach project. The west side bridge abutment and river bank are under construction.     Top right of the picture is the "hole in the sky" leading to the West fiddle yard. The bridge keepers cottage is in it's approximate position on top of the west bank, The bridge has had it's hand rails painted and the short length of lead in track has been laid. I'm using C&L Finescale track and the next job is to butcher some more plywood for the e

Another dose of the pedants

nevard_110101_catcott_IMG_1728_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.     It's Wycrail this weekend, so Catcott Burtle has been set up for the last week or two sufficiently high off the ground to hopefully avoid the various scenic details being chomped on again by the cat who has a taste for white metal, brass and plastic card.   The happy snappy above is of Catcott, the ficticious (maybe more 'faction') scenario depicting a mixed train off the Bridgwater Branch which regularly featured suc

Isn't the Internets Brilliant?!?

It's not often I feel compelled to compose a more typical blog post with my general wittering (I think two in as many years is quite sufficient) but over the last few days I've been, well overwhelmed isn't quite the right word, but I've come to truly appreciate what a fantastic tool the Internet really is.   Of course, there are the more immediate aspects, (one of which I'd probably best not mention here ) such as bringing together like minded groups to discuss their interests and share their

The secret Diary of an exhibition exhibitor/ Demonstrator

HI all,   well its been a while, a long while since i posted my last entry on here, now this is due to many factors but one of the main ones it's now show season again and as some of you know may know i do a DCC demo at some shows in the north of the country and the past couple of weekends have been taken up with shows so i thought seeing as we have had a thread on here about how start exhibiting your layout, i would explain what you may face in the joys of taking your trainset/ demo on the

A baseboard plan...

Hello all,   I will soon perhaps start a new blog and re-name my new model railway with a better name but for now my old railway's blog will do.   The picture below is just the baseboard idea. I will again be making a Heritage Railway (or Preserved if you like) layout. Ive got no idea as to if i should have the back as a fiddle yard or have a sort of typical heritage railway cluttered up yard with 2 loops. If anybody can come up with anything...please share! and I don't mind making one of th

Vitrains 47787 West Coast

Hellow - Another vitrains 47 this evening - I do like them. Unlike 'Brunel' in my previous entry there's less so do on 787. Out of the box The model has the correct tanks, aerial brackets , plus 'Flush' headcodes both ends - and the more modern style 'Crewe' LED cluster tail lights, so some nice attention to detail differences by vitrains. There's printed representations of the plates left over when the TDM fittings were removed from the cab fronts. On the real thing these little plates bar

On SRman's Workbench - update November 2011 - buses and a 'Tin HAL'

I thought I had a workbench thread somewhere but cannot find it, so maybe I simply added these things to my layout thread before ... or maybe I am going completely loopy!!!   Anyway, I have been fiddling with a few more projects lately.   On the railway side, I have an Ayjay models resin kit for a post-war 2HAL unit, also known as a 'Tin HAL'. Some of the detailing is a little on the heavy side but it looks like a 2HAL should. I have removed the moulded jumper cables from the DTC end and wil

Heathley Kirkgate Part 3

I've put turnout building on hold whilst I await some more supplies so work at the weekend involved finishing the Jinty (screw link couplings and crew painted and added), weathering another ex-PO wagon and making a start on renumbering and weathering a Fairburn tank. Pics of all these to be posted at some point. In the meantime back to the final part of the pseudo-historical mumbo-jumbo with a look at traffic, stock and a track plan.   The supposed era for Heathley Kirkgate will be around 1957

On the home stretch?

Looking a bit tidier now by Will Vale, on Flickr   I forgot to pose a train! Rats... But I thought it was worth posting the picture anyway since it shows quite clearly what's done and what's to do. The key thing I've done today is sand down the baseboard, round all the corners, prime and paint it. I also sanded down the brush marks on the pelmet and brackets, dusted them off, and gave them two more coats of black with a roller. The fascias have had one of primer, three of semi-gloss acrylic "e

Inspired by ExpoNG - possible layout plan

Yesterday I visited ExpoNG and came away with quite a lot of inspiration and enthusiasm. I bought a motor to go into my P4 Barclay fireless.   I particularly liked some of the 'single baseboard' layouts like 'The Loop' and drew up a plan to give an opportunity to run some of my 7mm stock which doesn't get a trip out anymore since I sold 'The Works'. This is based on a fictitious exchange between the Wissington Railway and a narrow gauge agricultural line. I'm imagining a river along the back

Vitrains 47484 Isambard Kingdom Brunel

Good evening, I'm amazed how long its been since I last posted, and since I last done any modelling, mainly 'cos I've been busy with my other hobby, my 1976 Alfa spider:   but now for something else made in Italy that will go rusty, is poorly assembled, unreliable, wired badly but looks great yesI have another Vitrains 47 Its the lovely 47484.   I already had a set of brass plates for this loco and I was a little disappointed to find they didn't cover the printed versions. A little bit more progress and a few more pics.

My half term break has allowed me to make more progress with the scenics and also to run some trains. In my earlier post I outlined how I had built the embankments and cuttings around the road over bridge at the "Pickering end" of the station scene. Beyond the road bridge the line is due to enter a further short cutting before entering the fiddle yard through a tunnel. The embankments for the cutting at the rear of the layout will hide a hidden siding which will add extra storage space to the

B-set E116 - Construction starts (and improving the E140)

Having made good progress on my planed revision for the day, I have spent a little time this afternoon working on the B set   I modified the locations for the bogie mounts, increasing the width of the brackets with scrap evergreen strip. This gave a much bigger base to glue to aiding keeping them straight. A length of brass was evo sticked to the sides to ensure they stay straight.   The roof is a very poor fit (in that it just does not fit!) So far I have thinned the ends of the roof an

26 - bed and breakfast...

Good afternoon,   A little distraction this afternoon as I dug out my TPM class 26 which was started 18 months or so ago.   Although this preceeds the recently released Dapol 26, it is still a very nice model and represents the later style class 26's. It is intended for a Farish class 33 chassis and although this means the underframe detail will need some mods and I was wondering about using some of the bogie sideframes from the Dapol 26 (the Dapol chsssis won't fit...already tried that one

Does my chassis look big in this?

As a further distraction from the 37 bogie project, I thought I'd do a little more to the chassis for the Nitric Acid tanks. I'm using Alibre design for this as well, which has a sheet metal function, that calculates fold sizes and the half etched fold areas based on the parameters I specify. It's taken a while to get my head round, purely because there's so much it can do, and I'm not really familiar with CAD, so I'm very much learning as I go along.   There's a few hours work gone into thi

When scenery attacks

Zombie Hands by Will Vale, on Flickr   Just a quick update to say that I'm still plugging away at the layout despite work, distractions, and minor disasters. No decent pics yet but I have done the following:   * Melted some track and distorted the track bed. * Painted all the rocks * Made a lighting pelmet (which works) plus brackets to fix it to the layout, and primed and sanded it. * Added ground cover to most of the layout. * Weathered and installed the bridge (more-or-less, it still

Happy new camera!

I have wanted to upgrade my digital camera for a while now, my old Fuji S7000 was, when I first bought it the dog's dangles but I have since realised it's limitations. What camera? Well I have owned several SLR cameras in my time from cheapo Zenith to the Olympus OM1 and was seriously considering going the digital SLR route. However, nice as that may be most of them are as bulky as my Fuji, making it awkward to carry round places like model railway exhibitions and use in confined spaces like

A belated round of freight photos

Morning all.   I didn't get around to posting these images earlier, though I actually took them on 7 October when I felt the need to turn my mind to something else, following Grandpa's passing one day before. I rode out to Bischofsheim once again, hoping to capture a few freight trains circulating through the yard there.       294 665 was on yard duty that day, and is seen here moving towards Bischofsheim's station building during her shunting turn. Weather that day was unstable with int

24. Loco Weathering

Well its been a while since I posted any updates so I thought I would show some of my recent weathering efforts. Its all done with an airbrush and I use humbrol enamels leather and matt black and a bit of encouragement from the various frenzy of DVD's, books, and magazine articles that have been released over the last 12 months or so. I am not sure if it is to everyones taste but I like what I have done so far. I think there are some interesting effects especially some by using a bit too much wh

They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
    • No but a modeller freind has owned and restored 3 early T models. Also I was draged to many Veteran car rallys in the 1960's. My dad being a fan.I have owned 50 cars and 24 m/cycles but only one car and one m/cycle were vintage, a1925 Bullnose Morris and a 1926 AJS bike. I have riden a few veteran bikes in rallys though., great fun.
