Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

bubble-icious...

Good afternoon,   me again...back to back posting   This posting is twofold really...   Firstly, my Dapol BR Blue bubble finally arrived today from Hattons...well 2 of them actually, due to a mix up between Hattons and myself. It will go straight back as I prefer to keep the money for the Blue Grey version...when you are ready DD..   I have been awaiting this model for some years now so I guess my part built worsley works 121 etch...will remain par built. It really is the one bit of ro

J10 'Foundations' Complete

Not a lot has been achieved since the last posting as Margaret & I have again been off for a few nights bed and breakfast. But the awkwardly shaped running plate is complete.   I referred last time to this causing me some problem. Were this a total scratch-build rather than a scratch-build using some purchased parts, the top edge of the main frames would have been a straight line. Or, if such was not possible or sensible, then the outer ends of the frame top edge would have been at the sam

water...off a dock's back...

Good morning,   Kyle took a back seat for about a week as my brother visited us. He gifted me an original Hornby HST that he had bought on ebay as a non runner, stripped it down and he had got it running...not bad for a 35 year old model with a 3 pole motor...problem was, the layout I am making for my sons is an end to end on an IKEA (longer) lack shelf. So we went down the DIY store and knocked out a 7' x 4' roundy roundy for the kids in a day using all the setrack from their boxes...they als

More Growth

I was talking to Traction of this parish yesterday about the Engine Shed kit that has been serialised over the last three months in Hornby Magazine and on the way home from work it occurred to me that if I nicked a foot of the fiddle yard area at the front I could extend the coal staithes road past the goods shed to lead to said shed     Got to say it's a no brainer, I only need 1 ft of fiddle to hold a couple of cassettes at any one time, all I need is the kit in "Ashlar" and I'll be looki

We Will Remember Them...

The message for today goes without saying… They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.     Pictured on my main blog is my model of N15x class number 2333 Remembrance, originally introduced by the London Brighton and South Coast Railway, designed by Billinton, as an L class 4-6-4 tank. Then number 333 was named Remembrance and became the com

Sunshine and steam

Ballast empties by Will Vale, on Flickr   I thought I'd try and be like the cool kids and attempt some smoke effects with Photoshop. This is a white mask with a lot of dodge + burn + smudge, then some filters, unsharp mask and selective re-blurring. I still don't think it's detailed enough compared to the reference I was looking at, but in fairness I was using a trackpad. I'll have to try this again with a tablet when I'm at my desk. Here's a crop (if you click through you can see it at 100%)

Southeast Steam Railway - No Longer trading

Hi,   It is my very sad duty of inform you that the Southeast Steam Railway in Bigporth no longer exists.   Actually, the decision to scrap Bigporth was taken a few weeks back, this is because I am moving bedrooms (within the house before any smart person say anything! ) to one which is bigger. The amount of work that would be required to move the layout and modifiy to fit the new room would be so great that it is easier to break it up and start again.   So unfortunatly, it was taken on M

A Shed Load of Card

Over the last few lunchtimes I've been busy with some free card and the Scalescenes Goods Shed kit, again the OO kit blown up to O gauge on the printer.   Here's how it stands at the moment, with mug to give an idea of scale     rafters are glued to the card and are drying under a box of paperwork (knew there was a use for it )   There's a lot more corrugated card in this one than I normally use, and the main walls have been made a lot thicker than designed to give a bit more rigidity

APA boxes & 2mm isnt half of 4?

Getting the APA boxes together has given me a better idea of what space is available, both within the boxes and in the space where they will reside when not in use!   There will have to be a few re-thinks. I was originally going to have a seperate fiddleyard attached to the end of the boxes, but the space for the boxes is absolutley filled by the boxes and there isn't really going to be space to store a seperate fiddleyard, whatever there is will have to be contained and self-contained within

Castle Bolton, a oo gauge continuous run , fold away layout

Its been quite awhile since writing a blog, so thought about time to start doing one on my current project , Castle Bolton.     I chose the name simply because i had a very nice day out recently with my wife at Bolton castle, was stuck for a name my layout , so why not. i can toughly recommend a visit,if you like castles and you are up in North Yorkshire near Leyburn.   When i did my boxfile layout Stooperdale Engineering i mentioned i had quite a bit of model railway stuff left by my late f

My infrequent blog updated again

Well my infrequent blog is updated two days running. As you all guessed it is of coursea Bulleid tender for a DJH Merchant Navy that a bought a fair while back in the days before Hornby's efforts. I have just sold on ebay a Crownline Q1 kit again bought before Hornby bought out their RTR model. I decided not to build that as I purchased one of Hornbys finest. The Merchant Navy came out of the draw at the same time and I decided to make a start on it. Anyway this is the state of affairs after a

Rural Backwater and a People's 'Grasmaster'

111109_polbrock_IMG_1809_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Hopefully a little scene a tad like that from the excellent Railway Bylines? Here we picture an EWS class 08 trundling through Polbrock with coal for the nearby china clay works. Passenger trains haven't stopped here since 1967, and despite lack of use the ex-GWR corrugated iron 'Pagoda' looks in fine form considering its age. It would also appear to be in Southern Region colours, a result of frequent regional boundary changes.

Dapol Class 26

I seem to possess a double dose of the Scottish "careful with money" gene: I rarely let the moths out of my wallet (helped by not having easy access to UK shows or model shops). And I am supposedly focusing on a pre-WW2 LNE scenario. But when I saw Dapol had done a Class 26 BR diesel, I couldn't resist a blue one. I saw every loco in the class (bar one) when I was an kid, and others on rmweb spoke highly of the model. Only problem was, they'd all sold out online... I finally found one at Gaugema

Can you guess what it is yet?

Well as the title sez, I'll post updates to my blog at irregular intervals. Today I dug out a kit that has been languishing in my collection for more than a few years. Todays efforts have produced this along with some scorched fingers.     So as the entry states, can you guess what it is yet, and yes it's a tender. Wheels are a bit of a give away Sorry for the crap photo.

3D Printing - DU65 Draisine

The first test print of the DU65 Draisine came today from Shapeways. The box was huge for what was a small item but I guess "better safe than sorry" is pertinant due to the level of fragility involved with their items! So I tore into the box and out came the test print.   What can I say except WOW! I am very impressed by the level of detail that can be achieved using 3D printing! I was also very pleased because it fit quite easily onto the modified Arnold Chassis. Here are a few snaps I took t

I was half right!

The half right bit being at the end of my last, unusually verbose, post where I said that the next post would be about modelling and with pictures and stuff. So here it is! The part I was wrong about though is that I thought it would be about the 37 bogies, however I've decided to do a bit more to the TTA chassis that still only currently exists in the virtual world.   I've now drawn up the axleguards (W-irons if you must ), mounted them to the chassis rails with Scale Hardware rivets, and

Three exhibitions, three weekends

Following hot on the heals of last weekends excellent and successful Wycrail exhibition hosted by my own local high Wycombe and District Model Railway Society for the next two weekends I will be assisting Mike Wild of Hornby Magazine operating layouts at firstly this coming weekend the Spalding show with Bolsover and Seven Pit Lane and the following weekend at Warley with Ashland.   Bolsover and Seven Pit Lane   Ashland   This is an extract of the latest entry on my modelling blog clic

More loco weathering for Heathley

Work continued at the weekend on some weathering and detailing jobs. The Jinty is now about finished with crew added and screw link couplings. Having photographed it in bright sunshine I think the chassis needs toning down as the brown/orange tones are too strong and don't match well with the body. This particular model (from the Bachmann Suburban set) doesn't feature the keyhole and I'm not sure if it should with the number I've chosen. No doubt someone will inform me of any error.

Tractor update 2

Evening all   I've been making slow steady progress with the tractor which has culminated tonight in the gear box being powered up and test run. No shorts and the wheels went round!!   The body and chassis have both been primed and painted and the next step will be to fit the pickups to the chassis, then glaze the body and put the roof on. Then the final painting/light weathering, transfers...   Also have made a start on the so called match truck, which I've always thought was a milk trail

4mm slate roofing

I've been looking at options for modelling the slate roof on the goods depot at Farthing. For what it's worth, here's a quick overview of the options considered. Above is one way of doing it: Lengths of thin card strips scribed vertically, and overlaid. I think this can give good results - in 4mm at least.         But thin card also has its drawbacks! I recently noticed that the roof on the parcels office at Farthing has buckled. Either the glue has simply let go,

Introduction

To explain the title... on Christmas Day 1971 I found my first ever "Railway Modeller" in my pile of presents. I was spellbound - I still remember the Railway of the Month, Bill Hudson's Ashover. I re-read it dozens of times, and spent my pocket money on a monthly subscription. No doubt I wasn't the only one.   Part of the fascination was that it gave a view into an adult world different from anything I'd known. There were several words I'd never heard of, and rather than ask someone, I simply

Autumnal mood

Afternoon all!   In between courses, I put in a quick railway photo session which I held at Mainkur Station in the east of Frankfurt - the station arguably being among the more decrepit ones. This but was balanced by the following two captures...       While a couple of workers were figuring out how to get a small excavator onto the island platform, SBB Cargo's 421 392 was gunning through with a fast container working, emerging from the autumnal haze.         And seen here against

    • Next step completed after the six needed for a track gang have been painted and their foot pedestals clipped off. They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. The
    • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
    • No but a modeller freind has owned and restored 3 early T models. Also I was draged to many Veteran car rallys in the 1960's. My dad being a fan.I have owned 50 cars and 24 m/cycles but only one car and one m/cycle were vintage, a1925 Bullnose Morris and a 1926 AJS bike. I have riden a few veteran bikes in rallys though., great fun.
