Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

P4 Deltic Conversion, Part 20… final stages and completion

P4 Deltic Conversion, Part 20… final stages and completion Well, I didn’t really think that I’d get here, but thanks to the support I’ve received from a number of RMWebbers (listed) among others, I’ve finally finished my Nimbus. OK, so he’s going to have to come apart again once I get my rolling road so that the gears can get a good seeing to with plenty of lubrication... I think the gears are all a bit gungy and dried out... so running is a little rough inside, but the pickups are ok... and

Heworth Sidings - Update - 01/12/2011

Hi,   Here's a pic of one of the converted Code 55 turnouts for our layout. I've removed the spring (which keeps the point blades in position) as we are using slow action motors, isolated the turnout blades from the frog (using a jeweller's saw) and tied the blades to the stock rails electrically. Finally I've added pickups to the frog and stock rails.     We've also been discussing how we can better protect the rail ends when the boards are being put up or taken down, basically we want t

DS1169 part 2 - Bonnet forming.

Forming the bonnet   The first thing I did was to anneal the brass bonnet by heating it until it turned to a straw colour over a gas flame (cooker). I can never remember whether you're supposed to allow the brass to cool naturally or quench it in water, I just go with the former option. Works for me... Then I soldered one edge of the front panel to one side of the bonnet;     Then I rolled the bonnet around the first corner, using a 3.5mm drill as a former;     Gently rolling the bon

Salute to the glass-half-empty brigade

Train nuts aren't known for having the most positive outlook on life, here are a few comments I've picked up over recent times, many on internet forums sadly.   Of course this is only the tip of the iceberg, but I'm sure you can add some real corkers (don't be too rude though, this is not my website).... Didn't buy that mag because it was plastic bagged Hope they do it in N gauge soon Why do I have to pay for it? There's nothing in it for me Photography, these days it's all Photo

More research (or a weekend out)

A couple of months ago I ventured out for a weekend's research, visiting Didcot (for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Great Western Society) and STEAM (20th anniversary of the closure of Swindon Works).   I returned with lots of photos, and I include below a few that are relevant to my layout (and a few that aren't, but seemed worth including anyway).     I haven't yet established when 4 or 6 wheel coaches were replaced by bogie coaches in my area, but this one is from the righ

WIT you lookin' at? Gem Mercontrol

Heathley Kirkgate is in a shed which also has to function as a shed and therefore has all those shed-type things in it such as gardening tools, bikes, lawn mower, etc. As a result the space beneath the baseboards is somewhat limited and this, along with cost, has dissuaded me from the point motor route. So way back at the Doncaster exhibition in February I purchased an assortment of Gem wire-in-tube parts to try out the system. With trackwork on the scenic area on hold awaiting parts I switched

The plank!

Well, I haven't posted for a while but I did find time recently to throw together a photo plank for my N gauge stock.   (Click the image for a larger version on my Flikr account)   The idea was to chop up a slice of foam board, glue some track down to it and see what happened, having never done much in the way of scenic work in this scale. I'm relatively pleased with what came out.   (Click the image for a larger version on my Flikr account)   This over view shows its a pretty simple

Turnouts

Hi,   Just a quick post about turnouts for our layout. We intend to drive all turnouts on the Scenic Boards with slow action motors and have chosen to use TT300s from Traintronics. These are DCC ready motors in that they have an inbuilt accessory decoder and frog switching capability. As far as wiring is concerned, they need to be attached to the Track bus or in our case the dedicated Accessory bus and then just need the usual connections to and from the turnout to perform the frog switching.

Detailing the Farish Class 50 - update 1

Good afternoon,   Just thought i would add an update for my ongoing project. Today i have been fitting the handrails to one end of my loco and it's starting to look much more like a 50! I'm still not happy with the headlight but that will be a lesson learnt for the next one! I have also decided to change the farish plastic buffers for some nice etched brass ones and this has made a difference. Any comments kindly appreciated.   On this picture you can see the lowered body on the chassis.

Lights. Camera. And a question.

Hello everyone.   Have been completing quite a few boring jobs of late like electrics etc and one job that got finished today was the lighting pelmet. Its nothing fancy, just a length of ply with some bracing a fluorescent light and bob's your uncle, I have built it so it slides in position either end of the layout using the frame that supports the facia.   Other news has been purchase of a Branor Systems Kam truck, (no connection just very happy customer) What a great little piece of kit,

Morfa Bach (My new Cambrian layout) Update,

It's been a week or two since I published any progress on my latest winter project Morfa Bach.   I was looking through my books on the Cambrian and Great Western lines in Wales and discovered that "Morfa" translated into English is "Salt Marsh" and "Bach" is Baby or small, so it transpires that the model will both be small and include a coastal section of salt marsh.   Anyway, I digress and should be telling you about the layout's progress (or lack of it) so here we go...       I have ju

Slow Progress

Not a great deal of progress since my last entry, mainly due to the fact that until I can get a trench dug gown to the garden shed to lay the electric cable, my modelling is limited to the weekends and eventhe only whilst the sun is up.   However "Hayfield" of this Parish has continued to do me proud with his trackbuilding and I thought you might like to see his latest builds. The first two shots show the South end of the station and once the pointwork to the left has been laid and connected i

The Night Riviera

With three Bachmann class 57's in FGW livery sat on my layout, and a fourth sat at the local post office awaiting collection, I decided I needed some suitable rolling stock for them to pull. It started quite promisingly when I saw Hornby produced FGW sleepers but these turned out to be the Scotrail versions. So after months of deliberation I decided to have a go at doing them myself. My modelling skills are nowhere near the standard of the models which I see on this website, and I dont have an

Warflats of differing heights...

Earlier this year I purchased a Gramodels Warflat from the Doncaster show, and I've finally got around to putting it together (after eventually getting the wheels for it) and I must admit, it's a nice easy build and certainly is well detailed. The one piece resin cast deck/solebars needed a soak in some hot water to straighten it out a little (but nothing major and that could've happened with it being stored amongst other bits and bobs for quite a while!) The whitmetal castings for the bufferb

Duck The Great Western Engine - Planning it out

All I will say at the moment in time is the face and chassis are sat on my workbench, and the body is being worked upon. Body itself will take a while to do, as it'll be done in numerous parts, but it should leave me with a rather nice locomotive, regardless of manufacturers announcing it next year.   Jack   Source

Empire Basin - Banner repeater - revised livery

Do you refer to the colour of a signal as a livery? I suppose in these days we should consider ourselves lucky that they don't get repainted with each change of franchise. Fancy a signal in 'Barbie Rail' pink and purple?   Anyway, following advice from folks here and more photographs from 'Adrian the Rock' http://www.roscalen....ratfordUponAvon I decided to repaint the post white, ladders black and also take the actual banner head a darker grey.     I think the result looks a bit more s

Mr Pilcher's finest

Very little modelling time at the moment, so a long time since an update and it's not really that much of one either!   The CAD shown in the previous entry has been worked on and is nearing completion, several tweaks to do yet but here's some more pics.             Mr Pilcher's finest? No it's not Mr Pilcher the forum member, it's R.S. Pilcher who was General Manager of the Manchester Corporation Transport Dept in the 1930s and the tram shown was his 'Pullman' car, which becam

Moving on

Well with over a month since my past ramblings I though it was about time to "do something" Now having settled into new flat finally only 6 weeks after moving in I cleared off the workbench commonly know as the kitchen table and got down to some modelling. For those of you reading my ramblings I have a confession to make, I have wandered from the path slightly but this is only in an effort to get modelling mojo back after a particularly busy patch at work. SO before you is the evidence of two sl

Progress update - Maunsell coaches gallore

Some progress on my coach building.   The two Phoenix Maunsell coaches are now painted in 1930s Southern Olive Green. I've cheated with the lining - it should be a yellow line with a black line inside it, but I've only done a yellow line. My defence is insanity (avoidance of). The lining is from HMRS pressfix, with the corners added by hand. The interiors are now added - Southern Pride seats and Slater's passengers. All a little crude, but good enough when the roof is on. Progress on the Warship and 2-EPB

This is the current status of 816. Not the best phot, and the body is only resting on the chassis. Painting is now complete, and it needs the bodyside windows and headcode box flush glazing and various other minor tasks doing. And I've just noticed that the marker lights as still masked off.   The biggest challenge is going to be that A1 buffers, and these have a threaded tail which is retailed by a small nut. I'm trying to figure out a way of retaining the buffer heads in a way that stops

LSWR Gate Stock Pull Push sets announced by Kernow models

I am happy to post with the permission of Kernow Models the following announcement, from them: [/left] We are pleased to announce that we have commissioned Dapol to produce the much-requested LSWR Push-Pull Gate Set in OO Gauge. This will be produced from tools owned by Kernow Model Rail Centre and will be to the same high standard as the Beattie Well Tank and forthcoming Adams O2 Models. We will be working closely with Graham Muspratt and Mike King to ensure the models are as accurate

They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
    • No but a modeller freind has owned and restored 3 early T models. Also I was draged to many Veteran car rallys in the 1960's. My dad being a fan.I have owned 50 cars and 24 m/cycles but only one car and one m/cycle were vintage, a1925 Bullnose Morris and a 1926 AJS bike. I have riden a few veteran bikes in rallys though., great fun.
