Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Secrets of Brewhouse Quay (orig post 24 Dec)

Whilst RM web was having its well-deserved Xmas break, I still kept blogging externally (I usually copy lock stock and barrel here as well).   Here's my Xmas Eve post.........     nevard111223_bachmann3F_DSC_0529_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.   Bachmann Midland 3F weathered and renumbered as Templecombe's 43216. This loco was the 3F allocated to the former Somerset & Dorset line and was withdrawn in 1962.   For photographers, this was taken on a mid-1960's Nikkor-S (Ai co

Tavistock roof - one side now complete

Over the Christmas break, amongst other modelling projects, I've continued with the roof slates.   Having reached the top of the skylights/dormers, before adding further rows of slates, I needed to add ridge capping to each of the 6 skylights. Photographs do not really show this clearly but I assumed it would be lead capping fitted over a thin rod. I had some 9 thou steel guitar string left over from the roof trusses so used this, supergluing short lengths along the top of each ridge. For th

Another class 33 joins the fleet

just before Xmas 2011 i visited Trains4U for a look round and to get my present. came away with the 2 BR Bedford trucks by Hornby Scale Autos and a second hand Lima class 33 with some detailing on it. the loco is pre TOPS numbered so is going to need a number change but apart from that and the roof detail coming away with the selotape used for the price label and a missing wiper at one end, it is in good condition. there is buffer beam detail with snow ploughs and a driver in one end, and it

O Gauge - An Adventure into the "Twilight Zone"

Somewhere in the west of England during the early 1950's there is a small branchline station with a coal siding, and possible freight depot serving the local industries which mainly consists of agriculture and light manufacturing... Now to get all that plus something a bit more stimulating into a 12 x 2 foot space at 7mm scale! So far there is no name for it... But I thought to record its progress. So far the stock includes a small Tower Models steam shunter 1364 (made for them by San - Cheng)

HO Jouef 0-6-0 Tank Engine

Managed to pick up a Jouef "Junior" range locomotive the other day, and first impressions are generally quite good. I do like the size of the locomotive, which turned out to be smaller than the Dapol/Hornby terrier. Model features NEM couplings and blackened metal components, giving it a modern feel. Need to sort out the livery though, not keen on keeping it French forever.   More pictures:           Jack   Source

Under the Christmas Tree

While in some ways Christmas 2011 was a disappointment, with many promised products failing to make production in time. Hornby's new teak liveried LNER Gresley suburban and full brake coaches failed to make it to Santa's sack and arrive under my Christmas tree.   One very welcome arrival was Bob Essery's new book in the "railway operation" series: Train shunting and marshalling for the modeller. I've had copies of Essery's titles on freight train operation and on railway signalling for some ti

Bachmann 3F

nevard111228_bachmann3F_DSC_0671b_WEB, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr.     The new Bachmann 3F you may recall from before Christmas, has now received its final session of weathering after a renumbering to Templecombe's 43216. I tend to weather engines in stages, breaking for a day to two to appraise the effect under the layout's lighting and how it looks in relation to the layout and other stock. I like to get a uniform but not necessarily totally even look between engines and other items o

Back of the Queue - O13 Milk Van part 2

In between eating, drinking, partying, visiting, more eating, more drinking, more... (I shan't go on because I imagine we've all had to go through the same thing) I've wangled a day off and managed some time at the workbench. I really wanted to get the underframe finished on this milk brake van so that it was at the stage for painting. The roof and details will be added after the body has the base colour on. This allows me to easily paint the inside - essential where there are windows present.

3D Printing in N Gauge - Update + Christmas

Well due to a heck of a lot of reasons I have not updated the blog in a while. However I have made progress on the 3D printing venture. I have 4 examples of the Draisine to build now and the original example has been shot with a coat a primer. This highlighted the exquisite detail. I also put some glazing behind the empty window frames.   At this point I would have uploaded a few images of the progress but you will just have to take my word for it until the server comes back online properly.

Bristol Barrow Road - Back on Track 2

Following RMweb taking it's unscheduled Christmas break I realise I have not posted anything for a while. Further progress has been made on the main line with both centre boards now having the C&L flexitrack replaced by ply and rivet track. Limited modelling time over the Christmas festivities has seen all 4 lengths fixed and fully chaired with the ply sleepers stained with Coldron dye. All the main line track is now in position ready for the droppers to be attached.   Here are a few photo

N Scale PRA Part 2

Bit of an update on the PRA; Gave it a clean up and a bit of paint, just need to add the decals on some "cleaner patches" I will paint on and it will more or less be finished. The other PRAs are currently in primer, as is the Polybulk.   Also in the photograph is 50149 which is currently undergoing weathering; Call it an act of Defiance (Get it?!) but I won't be attempting any cab rebuilding because I would probably struggle to make it any better. I also think the black window surrounds of the

making a start

As 2011 ends, and so does the construction of my personal layout, Sandy Hill, i fancied a new challenge for 2012. I have been contemplating an exhibition laout for some time, with a view to making it wow wise in the scenery department.   The plan is quite simple: two curved sections, six feet square (cut to shape) that will join together. The one curved half wll feature a raised two-track railway running alongside the beach area at Dawlish. The station will not be part of this. The other sect

Painting coach panels

My coaches are brush-painted, and I have sometimes been asked how I paint the panels. This video shows it. Be warned though that this is one of those bodged (hopefully not botched!) techniques I seem to often end up using - there are definitely more "correct" ways of doing it!       Edit: A bit more info as a supplement to the video:   In my experience, there are four key factors that effect results of this technique:   (1) Using the right paint.

A potpourri from Leipzig for the end of 2011...

Morning all!   We're currently in Leipzig once again to pay a few days' worth of visit to my girlfriend's family, which but also allows me to snap a few rail-related photos from outside my usual daily environment. That being said, I'm noticing there is not all that much still left for me to document in terms of urban public transport, so today's photo strip will not cover any really specific topic. Around noon yesterday, I had ridden out to Engelsdorf, where there is a shunting yard, which but

Oldtrent in blue diesel shocker....

Seasons greetings. Just an interlude, I can assure you, but I have aquired a class 25 and wanted to make a few mods to make it look better. The one I bought was the weathered blue model, and the first thing I noticed was the depth of the glazing, and that the windows were too small. A brief question on the 2FS forum indicated that there were other issues with the doors and exhausts on this now dated model. I thought about a class 24 cop-out, but have always preferred the looks of the 25, so d

Welcome back RMWeb

Glad to see RMWeb back again, but even more glad I have an externally hosted blog and a reliable Web Host. I hate to think how much affiliate revenue Andy has lost over the last few days.   While RMWeb has been down I've been writing, and the external Rede Valley blog has a number of new entries: New JMRI Release Wishlist for 2012 DCC configuration on Rede Valley   Plus working timetables for Waverley and ECML have been added to the prototype research pages.

Ropley - Downtime progress!

MHR Resident Black 5 heads towards Alton to collect it's first train of the day. Hi all, and belated seasonal greetings!   Well it's good to be back on-line, even though I can't help but think a few more bouts of enforced downtime might do wonders for modelling productivity levels!   Anyway, since the last update, a fair amount of progress has been made on various areas of Ropley. The Christmas break gave me chance to pretty much finish the trackwork the Ash pit being the last major pa

First Kitbash.

So I was reading the external blog of Chris Nevard's and latterly Graham Dent's. If you don't read them, I do actually urge you to do so! There's some good laughs on there as well as useful articles on how to do stuff.   One article which piqued my interest was one about a converted Bachmann Junior locomotive into a nice, generic industrial locomotive.   After reading it I was so inspired I set out and got myself a Bachmann Junior engine and a Dapol Pug kit.   Unfortunately the locomotive

Auf Wiedersehen, PET!

Farewell Central Trains 158782...   With the recent order for a "special" Northern Rail liveried Class 158 for the City of York model railway, the decision was taken to provide my Central Trains example as part exchange. The youngest of the seven 158 models, it was more an impulse purchase and hasn't seen much operation since it's purchase last year. As it's in Central colours, it therefore made the ideal candidate to be part-exchanged, with a model more relevant to the layout taking it's plac

N Scale PRA Part 1

My N Scale PRAs arrived today! I have given the one in the foreground a dusting of primer so I can better see the detail; I have also mounted it upon the Peco chassis I am using, which although isn't technically correct is getting used because I have lots knocking about. The one in the background is as they arrived from Shapeways.     The steps, handrails and ladders arrived warped (as normal) so I did my usual trick of dropping them in near boiling water out the kettle and they, as if by m

Christmas Time, Christmas Coach

Its that time of the year again and another freebie to print and fold up in card or photo paper. For best results print the tiff one at 1200dpi, but there is a jpeg as well. For larger scales either adjust the DPI or scale it in a print program accordingly.   In N this fits the Peco 15' wagon chassis (or brake van if you think Santa needs footboards)   Alan

The Duke's Plates

I received the plates for the Duke of Gloucester Saturday morning, Narrow planet have done a fantastic job, etching using thinner brass than for the 2-8-2 which has allowed a much better detail for the works plates etc.   Here's the nameplates fitted     I'm still trying to get the rest painted with white raised text etc, might not work due to the thinness of the etching, but I'll give it my best shot.   My large tin of pre-thinned PV72 satin varnish went off, maybe in the cold of the o

    • Next step completed after the six needed for a track gang have been painted and their foot pedestals clipped off. They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
    • No but a modeller freind has owned and restored 3 early T models. Also I was draged to many Veteran car rallys in the 1960's. My dad being a fan.I have owned 50 cars and 24 m/cycles but only one car and one m/cycle were vintage, a1925 Bullnose Morris and a 1926 AJS bike. I have riden a few veteran bikes in rallys though., great fun.
