Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Detailing, lots of (more I3 and J progress)

Progress over the last month or so has been slow. I'm not at the stage of adding detail to both locomotives, and there's an awful lot of it. The J comes with some very nice castings - even the clack valves with their piping were usable. The I3 on the other hand is needing a lot of minor detail scratchbuilding. Luckily I have photos of all sides of 32029 courtesy of the Bluebell Museum's photo service.   The I3 is a mass of pipes, being air and vacuum braked, and has a Westinghouse compress

New Year, New Start

Another year and I'm going to start off with the best of intentions of keeping a layout building blog going on RMWeb. I haven't done terribly well at that in the past. To set the scene, in the middle of last year I discovered the APA box from IKEA and presented it as a possible model railway baseboard structure. It's fair to say that many modellers have jumped on the product and are using it. So I thought it was about time I got in on the act. I was also recently asked to be a part of the Mic

Missys New Year Quiz

Hello   This post was meant to be published over the Christmas Break but with RMWeb taking a short break plus other things I have only just managed to get it done! I hope it was worth the wait!   OK, just before Christmas I had some unexpected time off work so as I was stuck at home I decided to have another go at some trees so my good friend Gina and myself sat down and made a few more. Now one of my goals for Highclere is that the trees on the layout are reconisable, so to test this out I

'O' Guage - Rolling Stock Image

Having discovered how to load images to the blog here is a picture of the rolling stock so far acquired for this new 'O' gauge adventure.     Now the serious modelling must begin -   (1) A layout plan would be useful and much research is currently going on as to what exactly can be done in 7mm scale on a 12 x 2 foot board... It will probably evolve rather like my adventures in 4mm scale, piecemeal - but it needs some overall idea as space is at such a premium. (It would be more than eassy

An Impetus Bagnall

And so, some months after this (though it was primed shortly afterwards and a different chimney fitted):     and this:     Christmas has brought about this. The full gory details (and some gratuitous Ebay related musings) can be found here and in this earlier blog entry here. All in one piece (albeit briefly), it's been taken apart for final painting which will have to wait until I've bought some suitable paint. Reassembly following painting is one of those stages of model making which

Lima LMS 42 ft CCT.

Inspired recently by Alex (Wiggoforgold) and Dave (Max Stafford) I thought I have a go myself at modifying one of these CCT's using Bachmann LMS bogies as a replacement for the incorrect BR ones that Lima fitted.   The moulding is trypical Lima and is quite fine. Even the undeframe is reasonably detailed.I manged to strip off the paint using Mr Muscle oven cleaner. Moulded handrails were cut off, as well as the roof vents and buffers.   Paul Bartlett's site came up with a suitable victim t

2mm FS GWR V6 Iron Mink build

This entry is the result of my Christmas project... I still has one GWR Iron Mink kit that I purchased from the 2mm Scale Association several years ago. The kit comprises 2 identical sprues each having a floor, an end and a side.   The first step was to prepare the floor, the centre was established, then the axle centres established from that datum (each was lightly scribed into the plastic), I also drilled vent holes for the fumes of the solvent to escape. The V-Iron was bent up along with

A fresh start!

Right, well, those of you who were following my blog last year will be aware I was modelling in N scale. This year, a scaling up in the size of my student flat (plus new flatmates I actually intend to live with for more than a year) has allowed me a little more time and space, and as such the N scale has been packed into two shoeboxes, for playing with at a later date. However, I now have a 5'6" x 2' alcove in my new bedroom, and the blessing of the two flatmates to build a layout. Nothing fancy

Hythe Parkway - Maidenhead Prepartions

Hi,   Well, it is only a week anyway until our next exhibition: Saturday 7th January: Maidenhead, Marlow & District Model Railway society exhibition at Cox Green Community Centre It is the first show of the year in these parts and a nice little community show and helps you to get back into the spirit of modelling after the festive period and a chance to buy bits and bobs for the layout that you need to run that loco you got for christmas on!   As I write this, we are about to

Making TOUs (turnout operating units)

Great to have RMweb back after the Christmas downtime - thanks to Andy for seeing it through.   I decided that I needed to redo the control for the lower section of Empire Basin to use servos. This is partly because I was unhappy with my attempts at wire-in-tube and the rather lashed up linkages I'd made which didn't work very well and partly because I wanted to have a test bed to demonstrate the use of servos for point control.   I needed to make a proper drive mechanism for the point blade

90 down 20 to go....

With the completion of West Country 34031 Torrington, I have 20 WC/BoB's left to do. It's hard to believe that it's not quite 3 years since I started down this slippery slope!!!! My main problem now is decent reasonably priced donors as they are few and far between, I'll get there somehow!!   I plan to revisit two I did in the early days this year, that were modelled using the wrong cab width loco (I didn't know better at the time), these are 34072 257 Squadron and 34110 66 Squadron - donors

Mind your Manors!

This locomotive is amongst some of the oldest models I own. It's a Bachmann GWR/BR Manor class synonymous with the Cambrian section of BR Western region.   I was looking round for some quick fix modelling jobs to do over the Chrismas/New year period so decided to do a bit of an upgrade on this....     I had already done some work to it 11 years ago when I bought it new, It's already had new name and number plates and a few other jobs done but, just look at that chimney! Absolutely terr

Leeds Pivotal Car CAD finished.

More CAD stuff completed, this time for the Leeds Chamberlain or Pivotal car, Leeds ordered around 185 of these cars, 75 each from Brush and EE and the balance built in house, this making them the most numerous of all the LCT tram types, so if you model Leeds trams there's a fair chance that you will need a 'piv'   They became known as 'pivotals' due to EMB designed pivotal trucks, the idea being to get a 4 wheel car to perform like a bogie car, unfortunately it only worked well when all the l

Beginners plans

I'm a traditional model railroad enthusiastic. Having caught the railroad virus at an early age, I enjoyed my first carpet train set and later my first lay-out up in the attack very much. But as happened with many of us I kind of lost interest as I grew up. Girls, the pub (yeah who didn’t!) and later family and kids demanded most of my attention.   But as you know it’s a persistent virus and recently it’s fighting its way back. Being Dutch, my interest of course goes out to the Dutch railways,

The Power of 1,458 Millimetres

Morning all .   Didn't get around to posting these images yesterday, so I'll just declare these as something for you to look at for the beginning of the new year. It turned out there were a few tram-related items I would still like to check out, so I tried to cover some of these on a small trip I went on in the afternoon.       In recent times, an increasing number of LVB's trams are being fitted with coloured destination displays and LED daytime running lights. B1, Hornby or Bachmann?

I’ve got to admit I’m no great fan of Edward Thompson. This mostly stems from his acts of vandalism to Gresley’s original pacific “Great Northern” and to the wonderful P2 2-8-2 express passenger engines which he rebuilt as class A2/2.   He did however redeem himself with the B1......read more on my external blog

A productive Christmas period

Well that was a very productive week: I've managed to lay all the track in the main station and the fiddle yard. All the remaining track will be up in the air so this is a major milestone.   Most points have a dropper for frog polarity switching and each of the loops in both "stations" has droppers connected to the DCC bus. I'll post some photos once image upload issues here have been resolved.   Next will be the fitting of the point motors (11 in all) Hopefully it will go better than last t

Happy new Year (Here's hoping)

New year greetings to everyone!   It is the last day of 2011 and to be truthful I'm glad to see the back of it!. I sincerely hope that 2012 will be a year of improvement over 2011 and enjoying my retirement. As far as resolutions are concerned, they are a waste of time because I can never stick to them anyway!     But, I have tried to set a few goals to aim for such as.... : To finish model kits that need finishing; Get rid of stuff that's not worth keeping; just cluttering up my

Heworth Sidings - Update - 29/12/2011

Hi,   Work concentrated on the main scenic board and we managed to lay the 5 large points forming the entrances to the Up/Down loops and the crossover. We were also able to lay the 3 medium points that are the entrance to the scenic sidings.     Point motors sat under Peco Code 55 Long points.   Close up of the Traintronics TT300 slow action motor. Connections shown are feeds from the Stock Rails A/B and Frog feed.     The rest of the day was spent modifying the rest of the poi

He ain't heavy....enough

The second bogie has now reached a stage where I could plonk the loco down on the pair of them to see how everything looked and worked, so I couldn't resist giving it a go! It has highlighted a couple of minor, related, problems that are going to be fairly easily corrected. The bogie pivots need to be cut down a bit further as they currently hit the centre traction motor on each bogie, and the loco isn't quite heavy enough for everything to sit right. The first problem can be cured with a big

Heworth Sidings - Update - 23/12/2011

Hi,   Just a quick update with progress now that the RMWeb is back online.   A few of us were able to get together on the Thursday/Friday before Christmas to do some work on the layout's scenic boards. We managed to lay all of the Cork underlay (1/16") for the trackbed and added some plasticard sections where the track bridges the modules. The Plasticard will be used to mount the copper clad sleepers to and the rail ends will then be soldered to them, which will hopefully protect the rail fr

    • Next step completed after the six needed for a track gang have been painted and their foot pedestals clipped off. They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
    • No but a modeller freind has owned and restored 3 early T models. Also I was draged to many Veteran car rallys in the 1960's. My dad being a fan.I have owned 50 cars and 24 m/cycles but only one car and one m/cycle were vintage, a1925 Bullnose Morris and a 1926 AJS bike. I have riden a few veteran bikes in rallys though., great fun.
