Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

A Holiday?

Happy New Year everybody.   I decided on a long rest from modelling, (at least long for me!), over the Christmas break and I’ve not been in ‘The Tank’ for the duration. Since New Year I’ve been attempting to convert music from old tapes into .wav files in the computer ready to burn some cds. I’ve managed to sort out how to do it without any expense but that allows for my having in stock a whole host of audio leads. Mind you it’s time consuming if you want to improve sound quality a

Part 32: Relocating my world.... :-)

Evening all! Sometimes a lot of things happen at once..... After living and working near were we live for the last 12 years, we have now decided to relocate. We have just signed the deal for this house: Not so very far away though, only about 12 kilometers from were we live now, but it's a very much better accomodations for both me and my wife. Both the communications and the house is better suited for our current needs. My wife attends University for her theological candidacy, and I'

new year - new layout - new blog...

....I wish he would just get on and finish something...   Firstly, my plans for 2012 will prevail and I am still aiming to try and complete Kyle by the end of this month and spend most of this year back working on coombe junction - moorswater as I would like to make some progress again on my main layout.   This is an introduction of something that has been simmering for a while (since that 4CEP landed) and whilst I have started to collect some rolling stock to set aside, the layout is prima

Taking stock (4) Dapol (ex Airfix) Meat Van

A couple of enjoyable afternoons were spent over the festive season building up this Dapol kit that has been in my top draw for months.       The original door hinges being totally wrong were removed with a sharp knife and replaced by bits of micro strip, Some nice whitemetal buffers from Nairnshire modelling supplies have replaced the plastic kit supplied items.   Screw link couplings and some brake rods have been fitted the vacuum pipes are part of the Dapol kit.       The vent

64 wagon test train.

Still more fun and games last night. We still have one or two electrical snags to sort out but generally speaking that's it. We're in business . A paint touch up will come eventually. We were pleased to welcome a member of one of our neighbouring groups from the Mid Devon Area . David B brought along a lovely part finished Mallard GW steam Railmotor and a couple of etched brass GW engineers wagons (Haye Developments). I'll ask him for some snaps.   Apologies for all the chattering row. It's im

A truck for Tanis

Opel Blitz by Will Vale, on Flickr   While I've fallen into the usual post-exhibition-leads-into-Christmas-holidays modelling lull, it's only been a railway modellling lull and I've actually got several non-train projects on the go at the moment. Thankfully I managed to steer my enthusiasm in the direction of railways again by building an Opel Blitz to use on a possible airfield extension to Tanis 1937.   (If you haven't seen Tanis, it's an A3 diorama/mini-layout combining Tamiya 1:48 models

Stop press Development

A bit of a stop press development here. I was looking at the layout with the structure shells in place and it suddenly hit me how daft the building front left is going to look like it appears in the above picture. I felt like it was wasting valuable space on this tiny layout. So I thought it would be an interesting feature to actually use that area to model the inside of the building. A warehouse with sheves and forklifts and all other kinds of "warehousey" things. I also plan to model an open

Guyers

Guyers is yet another one of those soulless concrete structures that are absolutely essential to re-create if you are going to accurately model the modern scene. The structure is called Guyers, but Guyers as a tenant have been gone for several years I believe and the rail connection to the rear of the building gone even longer by the looks of the pictures. Guyers were a builders suppliers so this building is principally another warehouse structure. When I was out walking past there on Friday wo

"Gresley D49 Conversion to a Thompson D Class"

Well, the Hornby Railroad D49 model I had ordered arrived, but the first of January was the first day I had to get a look at it. The model was taken out of its box, and promptly taken apart for the first stage of its transformation into a Thompson D Class 4-4-0, The Morpeth.   The driving wheels were removed by carefully taking off the chassis plate, and uncoupling the tender from the chassis by removing a screw. The front driving wheels had their crank pins removed in favour of a different s

Construction Progress

Today it happened. I put knife to foamcore and started construction on the structures for the layout. The research pictures I've posted earlier in the week have shown that the structures in the area are all big concrete boxes faced with diiferent materials so construction of those is going to be pretty simple. Todays mission then, was to cut all three shells in preparation for facing them with styrene sheet. Really it was just a question of cutting the foamcore to size and fitting the shells in

Class 20 sits down and refuses to move!

The Class 20's do a nice little hiss when the reverser is operated, and a slightly longer one when the driver puts his foot on the deadman. We captured these when we did the recordings at the GCR so today's 20 minute task was to add these to the project. Needless to say things didn't go quite to plan. No hiss on reversing and no deadman sound, in fact the loco just sat there idling and refused to move. I'd got this feature working fine on the 118 dmu so I knew it worked. Most of the time if you

Ropley - Two sides down.....

....Just the roof to go! Hi all!   A little more progress on the Carriage and Boiler shop building. The Southern side is now complete, and the whole building as now been assembled. All that remains to tackle now is the roof.   Following some suggestions after the last entry, I've added a roof, to aid keeping the walls straight, and added a third layer to the walls on the inside. I've also decided not to remove the window spaces. The real building has opaque cladding which you can't see

Hornby class 47s repair options? Help?

I need a 47 for a freight train so i've dug out 2 Hornby class 47 bodies from the garage that need some work.   the first though has damage on the buffer beam and i was wondering if this was possible to repair easily   or should it just go in the bin?   is it worth the effort?   the second needs the paint sorting and then new motor and bogies finding as these are beyond repair     what would be the best way to strip paint from the second example??   thanks in advance for the help

A Cornish Sentinel

What makes this Sentiel Cornish? It's a model of ECC's No.P403D "Denise". I built the model completely from photographs as I couldn't find a drawing anywhere. The things of note on the prototype are the huge exhaust pipe and the left hand walkway which is covered with some additional equipment (airbrake gear?)   I've applied an undercoat to the 3D Print of the Sentinel, some clean up is required but the print is excellent overall. The handrails, despite being 0.32mm in diameter, came out beaut

A carriage shed at last...

Well, it has been a while since I did an update for Kingsbridge. I have not been entirely idle on this model, but progress has been limited to tweaking the track layout, adding length to the sidings, and trying to get the trackside structures done in case the sidings need moving before ballasting. With this in mind I bought the Ratio carriage shed kit, thinking of bashing it to resemble the corrugated structure on the branch. As soon as I looked at it I knew this plan was not going to work, the

Location, Location, Location Where is Morfa Bach?

As people are starting to show interest in my latest project Morfa Bach, I thought it would be a good idea to let you know where my prototype inspiration came from.   So using Google maps I've posted a few links to the area my project is located.   First of all is this aerial view of Dovey bridge, the bridge keepers cottage still exists to day and can be seen on the left bank of the river in this shot. http://g.co/maps/5av2h If you pan out a bit the bridge I have modelled can be seen cross

Christmas Update/ Running-In 4602 (Ivatt 2MT)

This entry/galleries shows what is new to marble rose & silverfox.   At Christmas I Received my first train; My First Train is an Bachmann Ivatt 2MT (Like in the pictures)   I also received: Hornby Accessory Pack 1, which is mostly completely built(as in   3 Bachmann LMS Coaches (2x 1st/3rd Composites, 1x 3rd Brake) 3 Railroad fuel tankers   2 ovals (2nd/3rd Radius ) and straights (points to connect ovals)   ......................................................................

Starting from scratch

HI..   After a 2 year brake due to illnes, the time has come to get back into the hobby and build a layout so I can run some trains. I have sold off most of what I had too help the bills but with a new job, time to re-stock but what scale/gauge..   I like all Bristh trains and railways but as this will be my last tilt at the hobby I want to choice the right one. I'm thinking of trying 2mm FS as there is some very nice stuff about, I was going to do 3mm but they just move to slow. 4mm is als

A Grey Day

I wanted the overall effect of the layout to be a somewhat dreary urban scene. Somehow the idea of the bright blue skies that one so often sees on backdrops didn't seem appropriate.     I settled on grey, but do you know how many shades of grey there are!   The backdrop its self was made from hardboard. It's held up with simple batons screwed into the back of the baseboard framework.   I thought it would be very easy to get the shade of grey too dark, but my first attempt was way too li

Class 20 nearly there

I finished creating / extracting the Class 20 engine sound clips this morning. In-between 'real' modelling I spent the rest of the day tweaking the flowchart to get the engine sounds driving how I want them. I'm probably about 90% of the way there with that, and fed up listening to just engine sounds so I added all the previously created 'auxiliary' sounds (horns, air sounds, door slams etc) to see how it all worked as a package. Probably another two or three days tweaking to go and version 1 wi

    • Next step completed after the six needed for a track gang have been painted and their foot pedestals clipped off. They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
    • No but a modeller freind has owned and restored 3 early T models. Also I was draged to many Veteran car rallys in the 1960's. My dad being a fan.I have owned 50 cars and 24 m/cycles but only one car and one m/cycle were vintage, a1925 Bullnose Morris and a 1926 AJS bike. I have riden a few veteran bikes in rallys though., great fun.
