Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Table 4. Formations.

This table is titled Formations. The intention was to record examples of prototypically short or 'unusual' formations that would be useful to modellers, although this has extended to some longer formations, particularly for HSTs. The table is sorted by Text, for no good reason other than most of the other tables were. Not sure whether sorting by Date (or even Issue/Page) would be more beneficial. Dates are given in the form YYYY.MM.DD. I've used '00' in the date fields where the informat

Table 3. Liveries.

This table is titled Liveries. The intention was to record the modifications to the corporate BR blue (or green) plus the one-off liveries that in some cases only lasted until the next Works visit. The table is sorted by Text, as I assumed that most readers would be seeking information about a particular Class or individual locomotive. Dates are given in the form YYYY.MM.DD. I've used '00' in the date fields where the information wasn't given, i.e. a date of 1981 would be 1981.00.00, July 1

Table 2. Prototypes.

This table is titled Prototypes. The original intention was to focus on the prototype diesel and electric locomotives that existed prior to the Modernisation Plan but it has been extended to include prototypes on an ongoing basis, e.g. Class 252 HST, Class 370 APT, Class 210 DEMU, Class 140 DMU, LEV railbus etc. as well as some of the less successful Modernisation Plan classes, e.g. 21, 23, 28. I've also included some instances where individual members were modified, e.g. 37292 and 47901. The

Table 1. Firsts and Lasts

This table covers "firsts and lasts", i.e. the first time that something happened or the last time something happened. This could be introduction or withdrawal of stock, opening and closing of stations, depots or routes, and possibly others. The table is sorted by Date, as this seemed most appropriate. Dates are given in the form YYYY.MM.DD. To aid sorting, I've used '00' in the date fields where the information wasn't given, i.e. a date of 1981 would be 1981.00.00, July 1981 would be 198

Preamble

Hello.   Hopefully I haven't bitten off more than I can chew, and I'm not entirely sure that a blog is the best place to share this information, but I'm going to give it a go.   I've been reading old issues of Rail Enthusiast magazine and was jotting down information which I thought was of interest to me and so I considered sharing it.   This I will attempt to do in six tables, one for each topic that was of interest to me. These are:   1. Firsts and Lasts, i.e. the first or last time

Rolling road

Today I did a job that I should of done in the UK a year or more ago. My rolling road bearings were set to far apart. They worked fine except if the loco had brake gear or sanding pipes, then everything snarled up because the wheels sat to low. After taking one apart I found that if I redrilled the new holes at 10mm centres, this gave me 1mm between the rollers. So having drilled the new holes and reassembled the unit. I jury rigged a loco so the I could test before doing other. Bingo it worke

iPad drawing technique test

I had a vision of a small layout came into my mind at work today and filled full of admiration for the latest iPad works of Art by David Hockney I thought I'd try sketching it using the Adobe Ideas App. I've been messing with Adobe Ideas for a while off and on and I'm starting to get the hang of it. I'm still "drawing" using my finger rather than a stylus which can be a bit annoying when the line doesn't quite go where you want it to. The idea is basically Purfleet Quay in Kings Lynn http://bin

"Gresley D49 Conversion to a Thompson D Class" - Update 2

Not much of an update, but I've had a go at modifying the original smokebox door by using pastic strip for the straps. It doesn't look too bad but the numberplate (modelmasters) is probably going to go - the brass colour looks odd. I may try and paint it over in white, perhaps, but it'll have to wait for another evening.   The smokebox door dart is a new addition - a 4mm brass one from the Markits range. Literally just removed the moulded one and fitted the new one. Gunmetal silver used on the

More about Halstead Sidings

I thought rather than talking about the stock for the moment, I would instead talk a bit more about the layout itself.   As can been seen in my first blog I designed the trackplan on XtrkCAD, this went through several alterations including a complete redesign until what is seen today. Unfortunatly I didn't keep the other trackplans but I do remeber there was one based loosely on the Rev W. Awdry's Ffarquhar Mk II layout as I was intending to run my Thomas and Friends stock on it as well as my

Genesis

Though not a picture a taken at the genesis of my layout which has the working title of Halstead Sidings, this picture has nothing to do with the actual building of my layout but is in fact one of the earliest pictures I have, as I didn't think about writing a blog Halstead Sidings had an unnamed predecessor which was a a fairly big double track loop which was roughly 8ft by 10ft, had a decent sized goods yard and a roundhouse loco shed. This was all on analougue using a Hornby HM2000 plus the

LNER Fences

I am building, or perhaps I should say rebuilding an OO gauge model railway, which is LNER based and somewhere in West Yorkshire. Living in Turkey, where such things are quite unheard of, I rely on the internet for much of my information. This time, however, I've drawn a blank! I need some oo gauge LNER style station fencing! Can anyone help with information about kits, if such things exist? Many thanks. ~D

Photoshop fun

I am not the greatest photoshopper in the world. Unlike some members of this forum who add snow and smoke and even themselves to their pictures. My abilities stretch to cut and past and crop and tweaking colour a bit. But that doesn't stop me wanting to have a go and do something really neat on the backscene. The only part of the backscene that really needs some detail is the section with the road between the two buildings. So for a while now I've been looking around for suitable scenes, w

The new work shop

Well here are the pictures of the new workshop. As you can see there is still loads to do, it will be even better when the roof is finished and everything starts to dry out. It is about 3 metres square, I think I will be putting the bench under the window. With the usual racking down one wall. I have also outline planing permision to to put a track outside. Which would give me a 30 metre there and back test track. I will have to test track stability at high temperatures. There is not to m

Barrow Hill Mark II

Tried a couple of smoke hoods just to see if they look okay. These are copies of the old types as used at Saltley. I tried another design first and made twenty before deciding that I didn't like them!! The ones in the pics actually look as if they are designed to do the job.     Tried a long exposure shot -       Comments most welcome because I don't want to destroy the look already achieved without the hoods. I notice that at Barrow Hill only under half the roads have hoods for

Bubble Car for Wheal Elizabeth

Cor it's been a while hasn't it? Whereas I used to be able to count my modelling activity in hours, now it's minutes. Happy to report I've finally finished off the bubble car. Well I say finished, there's a mist of weathering, head codes to add, etc etc. I'm really pleased with the way this has turned out. Ok so you can buy a Hornby bubble car in green but that's not the point. This model means a lot to me personally because it's taken so long to build. I bought the donor unit 27 years ago wh

Setting the scene

Hello and welcome to you to all   Well, as you can see from the photo, there is no workshop. Since moving to Belem in north Brazil I have yet to get a proper modelling space. So for now it is the corner of our bedroom balcony. All is not lost though in the photo you will see an O gauge pannier tank. I will show more of this later. This was constructed in this corner. Being so near the Equator and the Amazon forest my work day is quite limited. I general do not work here much after 12 noon. As

Combwich - on the road again, just one more time (for now)

nevard_101106_wycrail_IMG_8340_web, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr. Wycrail, 6 November 2010. Note the cast of 'Last of the Summer Wine' in th foreground.   Combwich hits the road again on Saturday 21 January at the Astolat Model Railway Circle annual show in Guildford.   Combwich is 30 years old now, and whilst the layout has been contantly updated to give the impression of being far more youthful than it appears, the wiring dates right back to the early 1980's and is very overdue for a

Slow mo turntable

My friend Alan Powell bought an N guage layout which included a shed with a turntable.   When he first demonstrated that turntable I was gob smacked at the low speed and rock steady rotation it was capable of. Even in bigger scales the turntables I'd seen on various club/exhibition layouts rotated at unrealistic speeds or were very juddery or both. Here in N gauge was a turntable which had neither of these problems ... I wanted one.   The previous owner had kept all of the invoices and warr

Layout progress Jan 16th 2012

Having been presented with a day off work due to the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday and being rather fired up over my APA box layout concept. I devoted my day off to some serious construction work. Principally the structures. The first one to be worked on was the small low relief at left rear. It was already well on the way to being finished and some plastruct stone cladding, a Pikesfuff door and a scratchbuilt fire escape (which might just get re-made) coupled with some kin

Top & tail

Coincidentally, a pal has given me a couple of 20's to turn into a v4 sound-fitted top & tail pair (to go with his RHTT set). Work is still in progress but they sound good whistling round together, with the horns etc only coming from the front loco and reversing when you change direction. This wonderous sight might make its way onto You Tube when I've finished tweaking the 20 sound and he's finished his RHTT.   Saturday saw a sojourn down to St Albans for the show followed by a bit of MML

2mm Gearboxes - First Attempt

Hello   Ever since I posted in a past blog entry about a possible new gearbox I have been working on I have had quite a few people asking me about it as they are very interested which gave me the incentive to get it done. The idea I had was to get one together and take it to the St Albans show (which I really enjoyed btw) so people could see it finished. Unfortunately things didnt work out how I would have liked so I didnt get round to finishing it...UNTIL TODAY!   OK, for those of you who

Two steps forward, two steps back

Sometimes, forward progress on the layout is almost exactly counterbalanced by backward steps. Last week I made headway on the scenic (gradual) slope from the mainline to the retaining wall around the shed. Multiple cycles around the fill, sand, check for smoothness cycle and we have the gentle slope I was hoping for.     I’d achieved a nice smooth joint between the retaining wall mount, and the slope into the shed. And then as I sanded one more time, and trimmed hold-melt glue overspil

Leeds Pivotal/Chamberlain Car Prime Grey SLA models arrives

A large box containing lots of goodies arrived courtesy of UPS this afternoon, amongst them the first of the resin SLA Leeds Pivotal Cars, a few pics             Overall. delighted with this one, I'd say all the detail in the CAD has printed well, so it's fully detailed, the only visible stepping is on the roof, which is dead easy to smooth and sort out, I can honestly say that I think 'traditional' trams are going to 'print' really well in this method using the same orientation.

    • Next step completed after the six needed for a track gang have been painted and their foot pedestals clipped off. They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. The
    • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
    • No but a modeller freind has owned and restored 3 early T models. Also I was draged to many Veteran car rallys in the 1960's. My dad being a fan.I have owned 50 cars and 24 m/cycles but only one car and one m/cycle were vintage, a1925 Bullnose Morris and a 1926 AJS bike. I have riden a few veteran bikes in rallys though., great fun.
