Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Class 47 detailing project. Conversion of Bachmann 47. "A P4 Brush 4". Part 1

Workbench update January 2012. I’m going to create a few work bench updates here to reflect what I have managed to achieve since “finishing†Nimbus at the tail end of 2011.   As some might have read, I’ve had a bit of an issue acquiring the necessary to “P4†a Bachmann 08... so I’ll not touch on that here. I also had to strip Nimbus down to basics and replace the motor due to a unsettling growl which disappeared if he loco was turned on its side (bearings?) Lubrication didn’t hel

A little bit more progress...

The main focus lately has been to get the canal and it's cobble paths so that the bridge can be fitted in place.   the bridge has been fitted and weathered (found my old airbrush and quite happy with the results using model mates weathering spray through it) and track has been laid across it.   Peco points have been modified by removing the spring so that wire in tube point control can be used, I now need to make some under board parts to do this.   I've also had a bit of a play with maki

A New Beginning - and some improved skills and stock to go with it

Well, as it’s now rapidly approaching 18 months since my house move and nearer to 20 since my last update, I suppose that I’d better write something!   Progress has been by turns non-existent, considerable and backwards over the last year and a half, with a heavy emphasis on non-existent. That’s not to say that I’ve been idle, but taking up running and reducing my chin-to-face ratio from 2:1 to 1:1 as a consequence took up rather a lot of my time – especially in the early days when I

2mmFS GearBox (for Open Cabbed GWR Metro Tank)

Work has begun in earnest on the GWR Small Metro Tank that I wanted to build, some of you may already have seen the little gearbox that I had built for the project in a reply I had posted in Missy's blog http://www.rmweb.co....-2mm-finescale/.   Well as the chassis was being built I decided that the gearbox already built was a little too large and would encroach into the cab space (the model I am attempting to make will be an open cabbed Metro Tank to suit my preferred modelling period of c190

Things have hit the buffers!

It has been sometime since my last entry on Skaleby, and things have rather ground to a halt, hit the buffers or any other phrase you can think of which means tools have been well and truely downed! Other things have rather taken over. Our first child, Amber, was born on the morning of the 13th December 2011. Therefore I have had rather more urgent priorities of late such as feeding, nappy changing, sleep and finding enough time for work as well. At times like this I rather wish the myth that te

Barrow Hill Mark II - The Hoods

Smoke Hoods are now all in - phew! I actually do think it looks better now, but comments/suggestions always welcome.     Been experimenting with a roof finish also. On the last model I used 160gsm light card that was photocopied with Scale-scene's corrugated texture on both sides and transparencies with the same pattern as the windows, but it never looked right. This time I've used 1.5mm card with cut out window openings - the papers have been pasted on and transparencies with the corrug

Getting down and dirty in the works.......

A busy month as usual, lots of cursing and swearing with nameplates etc, but I've got there lol!   First up the completed victims - sorry loco's in their various states of dirtiness   First up is Q1 33035 now complete, done and very dirty:     Next is a very lightly weathered 34057 Biggin Hill on an Early Crest and unmodified tender:     Finally for the completed loco's is Grange Class 6800 Arlington Grange looking remarkably clean compared to her sister loco 6870 Bodicote Grange

Fresh in from Kernow

nevard_120125_class22_IMG_2312, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr. Yesterday morning I opened the door to the porch to find this rather well packed parcel from Kernow Model Rail Centre sitting there in the form of the much awaited Dapol Class 22 - a very useful item, especially for those that model railways half a century ago anywhere west of Heathrow.   I have yet to look at it properly, but was able to find a few moments to grab this snap of the compact little beast. Obviously the detail pac

Par Station in N gauge

Good morning,   I have been meaning to post something about my layout for quite sometime now.   Just a bit of background, I have been modelling the swiss scene for many years and have decided to model china clay operations in Cornwall for my latest project. Par was chosen as a prototype as I have never modelled a prototype location before. A visit to Par was tied in with a holiday in Cornwall during July 2010 and many pictures were taken. The great thing with this particular station is that

All quiet on the Eastern Front

It's all gone quiet while I get my Bachmann 20 ready for its video debut. Star of the show will be the disc-fitted 20058, currently on the workbench getting the faded rail blue treatment to depict a loco in the last years of its life. I can't decide whether to team it up with the completed OTA rake or the 3 BDA's I've finished so far. This afternoon was spent hopping between the 20 itself and making steel billets for the BDA's. These are made from lead flashing sprayed first with red oxide prime

Looking back at the weekend show

nevard_120123_45xx_DSC_1208, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr. As mentioned in previous blog posts, the Astolat Model Railway Circle 2012 Expo in Guildford was to be Combwich's last outing for a while pending a total re-wire to take some of the lottery as to whether the layout will perform or not. Luckily, and much to my surprise the old girl, which has now turned 30, presented very few problems other than a dickie frog polarity switch under one of the run around crossover points. On the odd oc

Morfa Bach (My new Cambrian layout) Update Jan 24 2012

As promised a weekly update on this project.   All the track is now laid wired up and tested. Rails and sleepers have been painted and a start made on ballasting the track. The stone retaining wall is finished and painted. and the entrance to Morfa Bach Tunnel is in place. The area below the wall is still under construction. The sky back scene here is purely arbitrary as very little of it will be seen once the hill side, trees and undergrowth has been fixed in place.     Meanwhile, ba

Castled

After praising Airfix Castles in this 'Blog', I have to now admit to purchasing one of Hornby's new Castle Class locomotives, Ince Castle.     Historically I had one of Dapol's engine driven castles, Dorchester Castle. More recently I tried out Cadbury Castle, the Hornby version. Neither could cope with seven coaches and the grades on the layout, quite a disappointment.   Ince Castle seems to be a different proposition. It has quite the longest 'can' motor that I have seen. However st

Layout Construction - weekly update (2)

This 'weekly update' is somewhat delayed - mainly by the inability of the timber merchants to deliver the ply on time - however, the time was not wasted - more later...   The last update mentioned the 'tea trolley' fiddleyard, designed to be moved into and out of the operating well to allow access. This has been constructed from 9mm birch ply (good quality & worth the wait). The deck is 5' x 2' and has 3" 'lead-in' at each end - the cassette length will therefor be 4'-6''..     The

back...to the backscene....

Good afternoon,   Further to the last update, and I guess Mike's observations, it got me wondering about the backscene.   I think it does look better with it, than the plain blue sky but I wondered whether in fact it might benefit from being toned down a tad?   I have had a little tinker in 'Paint' (as I don't have Photoshop) and basically have played around with the contrast to see whether it might look better if it is 'less in your face' (can't think of a better turn of phrase for that a

Ready to lay some track

The baseboards are now all ready to be bolted together, they have been painted white and not greay as intended due to there being leftover white from decorating to help save a littel cost.   I have decided to use m8 bolts and nuts to hold the boards together as this is a cheep and easy to use, using 2 per board this should give a strong hold while its being used. Clamped in place befor drilling.   The legs that have come from the EXE MRS www.exemrs.co.uk will not be attached to the layout

Cranes in odd places

Here we are on Sunday night, I have not done any modelling over the weekend, only look a at 735. As normal for Sundays we went out to lunch. It was a lovely place down by the river, there is in the little area a butterfly collection, and an aviary and what the call the Belem lighthouse. It is just a tower without a light at top, I will post a photo when I get a chance. Rainy season here so being outside at the wrong time is no good.   But on the way between the restuarant and the car park is a

New Challenge

Obviously I don't have enough unfinished, or un-started, projects, so this weekend I decided to try something I have bean meaning to have a go at for a while - making my own track. To be precise A C&L B6 turnout kit that I have had on the top of the cupboard for nearly 2 years. Why did I choose now? I have no idea, other than I had to wait for some paint to dry on my 72xx, you know what they say about paint drying!   Anyway, after 2 evening, about 8 hours, I now have this....     One

What I did on holiday or year end round up here comes 2012

It has been some time since my last entry. I was going try and do an entry a week. Not for egotistical reasons, but to motivate myself into making models. For too many years I lacked the mojo for modelling. Sadly over the past few months the pressure of work over took me again and I could little more when I got home than to sit in front of a computer screen and admire other peoples work on RMweb. As it seems the trend on other blogs, I will do a wrap up of 2011 and some thinking out loud about

Heworth Sidings - Update - 22/01/2012

Hi,   We've had a weekend of track laying on Heworth Sidings so it's time for an entry for the blog ;-)   First, a confession, if you have read the other posts in this blog then you'll know that it was our intention to use copper clad sleepers and solder the rail to them, in order to protect the rail ends where the modules join together. That didn't really work out for us, as the copper clad sleepers just didn't allow enough tolerance when it came to leveling the track and we effectively end

    • Next step completed after the six needed for a track gang have been painted and their foot pedestals clipped off. They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. The
    • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
    • No but a modeller freind has owned and restored 3 early T models. Also I was draged to many Veteran car rallys in the 1960's. My dad being a fan.I have owned 50 cars and 24 m/cycles but only one car and one m/cycle were vintage, a1925 Bullnose Morris and a 1926 AJS bike. I have riden a few veteran bikes in rallys though., great fun.
