Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Warship 816 nearly finished

After a month with virtually no modelling, I've managed to get an evening's work in. This is the state of 816 - all missing windows have now been glazed (the hard way using plastic sheet held in place with Johnson's Klear), buffersand couplings fitted and generally tidied up. I also removed the cab interior light. For some reason Bachmann have fitted a light to illuminate the leading cab - not very prototypical. Replacing the glazing in the headcode boxes (and painting the frames) makes

Giving it Some Structure

I thought I'd put a few words in about how I've attached the boxes in a little more detail than my reply to comments on the last post...   The layout is made up of three boxfiles - the larger (more expensive) type which are made of a chipboard like material rather than cardboard. Two are permanently attached, forming the scenic section, the third attaches and is the fiddle yard.   The two scenic boxes are held together by two strips of wood underneath. These also provide a space for electric

Barrow Hill Mark II - The Lights

The Lights are in - blew one up by not using resistor when testing, but the rest work fine! Here's a smoky shot (cigarette smoke) with the lights on (I've used 8 in total).     The next shot is a smoky one with outside daylight (simulated by a couple of 100watt bulbs). I'm trying to get the sunlight streaming through the smoke effect, but just can't get it to work yet.     I've included this last picture because I quite like the mottled effect from the roof windows on the walls.

Test Track

Today I have created a test plank where I can try and perfect new techniques and elements of the colour etc before ruining the modules that I have built. The following techniques and elements needed testing to get right: Colouring Kato Track with a spray can, Ballast over Kato Track (I wanted to see how easy or hard this is with Jonsons Klear), Foamboard platforms (both height and colouring needed to be checked), DAS Clay and a wire brush to try and give areas of compacted ballast,

Working on my 2mm Layout - an extended Inglenook Shunting Puzzle

Not very pleased with my previous attempts in building the tracks and points for my layout I have recently decided to take it from the beginning.   I will go ahead using the same track-plan, made using Templot, by Keith AAndrmes:     For the baseboard I purchased a new, good quality, 1/4" thick plywood cut to size (4' x 1'1") which has been nailed onto the old frame (saved after removing the original ply board).   I have decided to build the turnouts off site, on a Sundeala board. Hello All.

Hello, I'd like to introduce myself before I start on the real entries.   I'm Adam (agrwobsession) from just outside Birmingham.   I've been modelling for a few years now, still consider myself a newcomer though. Most of my previous projects have been fairly amateur but they were fun nevertheless. My last layout (an N gauge 10' by 1' shelf layout) was my first attempt at serious modelling, and I actually found the demands of 'realistic' modelling more rewarding. I took this layout to its nat

Castle Conversion

After much blood sweat and tears the Hornby body and Malcolm Mitchell chassis have finally come together. Once she has received her new identity, Totnes Castle will be very lightly weathered. I think the Malvern Hills make a very suitable backdrop!

An Electric Scot - Chassis

Good Evening- work now started on the Class 87 Chassis. The underframe was more or less cut off just leaving the box with the grill on. The parts were re-used from the Original Lima frame and using various tubing and sheeting, the frame was rebuilt to make the model look much better. The end result is worth it IMHO and it certainly improves the overal look of the model and gives the underframe more releif, as the Lima detailing is underscale, two Dimensional, and more suited for H0 guage than 0

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

I've just had a really enjoyable weekend in the company of the Airthey Park & Warren Lane crews who were kind enough to let me join them on the other side of the 'stage' and then socially afterwards. Experience of driving my sound-fitted locos in an exhibition environment allows me to optimise the chips for exhibitor's needs as well as everyone else's, so public thanks to everyone concerned. Apologies to Alan for driving my 86's into a non-electrified road on Warren Lane - doah!   With the

Magnetic Couplings

After searching for a coupling which was reliable, unobtrusive and still allowed for easy shunting with a shunters pole I was at a bit of a loss. The rapido is plain ugly and poor for shunting, the DG I found fiddley to assemble and tricky getting them to couple and uncouple if not perfectly assembled and mounted. The Micro Trains couplings are ok, but expensive and still fairly unreliable if not quite lined up right.   So, I had a bit of a brainwave, a year or so ago I read an article by Jim

Fisherton Sarum at Doncaster Festival of British Railway Modelling this weekend 11/12th February

Fisherton Sarum is currently only making two appearances on the exhibition circuit this year and the first of which is this coming weekend 11th and 12th February at the British Railway Modelling magazine Festival of British Railway Modelling at Doncaster Racecourse. With over 30 layouts ranging from N to O gauges, many of which ( including Fisherton Sarum, see February 2012 issue ), have graced the pages of British Railway Modelling Magazine and over 80 trade stands there shoul

Callow Lane - movie footage!

John also took some footage on his new camera on Sunday afternoon, so here are three representative sample pieces, showing the 08 shunting around. My thanks to John for taking the footage and taking the trouble to upload it to YouTube.

An Electric Scot

Good Evening,   Latest project is a Lima Class 87. Being a fan of the real Class 87, growing up with them, ive always wanted a model of one as I remember these fine machines ploughing up and dow nthe West Coast Mainline until withdrawal. I completed a Model a few years ago, but had to sell it. Thankfully now though ive been able to get a new model. Already being familiar with the models' faults I knew what I was getting myself in for, but ive list these below, some of which ive noticed have be

37175

I know Pete was eager to see 175, so here she is;     Could be better, could be worse! Still plenty to do, all the detail parts, headlamp, windows back in, finishing up the weathering. The 3 part plow is a 3D Print, so it's a bit of an experiment!   I decided on 37175 as she was in Cornwall during the 1980s but also in Scotland, so at somepoint I expect a Dapol 26 will cross my bench to become a partner for 175 on my other (non-existant) layout set in Scotland. Better finish the Cornish o

Morfa Bach (My new Cambrian layout) Update Feb 6 2012

Another week has flown by and it's time for the weekly update on Morfa Bach.   Progress on the scenery at the bridge end of the layout, Hanging basket liner covers the east bank of the river and some rocks and scree have been fixed to the west bank area.A small boat salvaged from an old layout has found a new home too!       At the tunnel end. A start has been made on adding some rocks and scree up the slope to track level. The tunnel is fixed in place and the new retaining wall made an

Clay Hoods

After a member (I won't name names as they may wish to remain anonymous!) on here kindly offered to sell me some clay hood kits he no longer required I became the proud own of 12 Parkwood clay wagon kits.   I built the kits and mounted them to Peco chassis, I then finished them off with Parkside buffers and Scalescenes OO clay hoods rescaled down to 1:148 (This took a little trial and error and to get the width right I had to print them longer than scale and then cut them down). I still have t

Callow Lane - playing trains

John (Re6/6) visited today and we had a few pleasant hours shunting some wagons around Callow Lane. I put all the completed buildings up, which give a bit more of a flavour of what I hope it will eventually look like.   Bagnall ('Jinty') 47276 shunting a few wagons into the yard:     The new cottages are almost finished, in the distance, with just the ridge tiles, chimney pots and guttering/drainpipes still to add:   'Lord Salisbury' waits the road back to Frog Lane pit, a mile or s

The First Steps.....

Having said I'd probably not be doing tooo much to this project... Well I just couldn't resist! Having spent most of the day on carboard mock-ups of the 'Ambridge' baseboards, I needed something different. Plus it gave me a chance to try out my new avatar, coutesy of Paul Martin from the 2mmSA. Several inches of snow (which kept me at home) also helped! So what progress today?   1st - renewed m Association membership (its that time of year!) E-mailed PM following BCNPete's suggestion - resu

Last brass to Viking...

I got an hour clear to spend on Viking today...   I only had a few parts left to fit in brass, namely the hooks on the buffer beans and the foot steps. These went on without too much drama, using low melt solder and holding the parts with tweezers or pliers whilst the solder took a second to cool.   The steps at the front are formed from two pieces, but went together with ease. There are no locating half etches on the underframe for either the front or back but they went on ok, but I did

Camerton goods yard

Some progress this weekend on the western end of the layout. This is the area of the goods yard, separated from the station by a road bridge. I say 'goods yard' but, in fact it was nothing more than a short siding alongside the line to Hallatrow. The yard was equipped with a short loading platform and a two ton crane. On the model, this area is much reduced in length to fit on a small removeable board across the room doorway. The photo below shows this section looking east.     The foam bas

Siphon J part 2

More progress:   The bogies have now been built, as per the solebar they are lacking the flange on the top and bottom edge (suggesting adding it with microstrip after completion) Still debating if I will replace these with an alternative.   there are two components that appear to be steps, that between a look at the Russel photo of the 7ft American bogie, and looking at the etch I cant work out where it goes.   On the body I have made a start on the underframe trussing, fabricated from L

The Ambridge Echo - more news from the village...

Whats all this about? Believe me I have never been to a horserace in my life (sheltered upbringing & all that!). HOWEVER, with the proposed chages to 'Upton Dene' scalewise I now have to justify the presence of rakes of 'main line' coaches appearing at Ambridge ('Raceday Specials' etc)! It will also be a good excuse to get on with the 'D&S' horseboxes my wife bought me for Xmas... Might even consider upgrading the route to a 'Blue' route to allow the odd 'Manor' or 'Hall' to run!

    • Next step completed after the six needed for a track gang have been painted and their foot pedestals clipped off. They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
    • No but a modeller freind has owned and restored 3 early T models. Also I was draged to many Veteran car rallys in the 1960's. My dad being a fan.I have owned 50 cars and 24 m/cycles but only one car and one m/cycle were vintage, a1925 Bullnose Morris and a 1926 AJS bike. I have riden a few veteran bikes in rallys though., great fun.
