Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Vertical fiddleyard reconstruction

The re-construction of the fiddleyard started in earnest with a couple of days off. The original Mk-1 version was based on a lump of MDF as a back with some shelves of 6mm MDF fastened on the front. The unit had been built up one at shelf at a time at it had proved difficult to make each shelf align properly with the exit roads, basically as layers were added the previously alignment would get pushed out with the extra weight. I also had the problem that in retrospect I had mounted the rack-moun

Pointing the way...

Greetings. I have been inspired to have a go at a 3 way point by some of the excellent work in the 2FS forum of late. I took the template from Templot ( I am very much a beginner but managed to cob a solution together). I constructed the turnout from code 40 and pcb strip using my usual easy method of construction: there are no chairs used. It took a couple of evenings from start to finish, and my test wagon rolls through all roads nicely. The photo shows how I planned to isolate parts electr

RT Models Chaldron wagons - part 5.

I've now added the last few etched parts to my rake of Chaldrons. I started with the door catches, these comprise of two small etched plates that are attached to the waggon frames on the opposite side to the brakes. The instructions tell you to just simply glue these in place. As I have 5 of these waggons all of the door catches need to be in the same place on all of the waggons otherwise they will look frankly silly! So I made up a small jig out of a piece of scrap etch...     ...which co

Return to Loose Ends

A discussion over in the Little Didcot thread about broad gauge track reminded me that I've said little about Loose Ends for nearly two years. Mind you, I've also done very little with this little layout on a few boxfiles. After the warping disaster, I put the boxes back on the shelfs where they stayed for most of the next year. However, the embankment section has had a new foamboard track bed without cork and a short section of dual gauge double track has been laid and ballasted.   The track

A unique and interesting idea?

Prompted by this post on rmweb I got thinking about a couple of things. Firstly in that post, it was discussed about restoring 18000 and her history. I have a fascination with the prototype and the oddball. For those who don’t know, 18000 was a gas turbine powered locomotive ordered in 1946 by the GWR [...]   Source

all aboard all aboard...

Update - After almost 2 years, KoL finally has a station building....but not a finished one...   Have been a bit quiet of late as I wanted to make some significant progress with the building before posting...and here it is...     Firstly, I know the roof needs toning down...but it does tend to take your eye off the backscene at present...   I will just give a concise history of how the station building was developed. You may recall this was Mk II as the plasticard version was too crud

"Thompson A2/2 build - 60503 Lord President" - Brief Update

It's been a very busy start to 2012, and the time I've had for modelling has been at an absolute premium. Between travelling around the country for my work (I was in Arundel yesterday - a beautiful, magical place), sorting out the plethora of paperwork for my forthcoming children's book, and various other family related odds and ends, any time to dedicated to modelling has been solely confined to snatched moments in the dead of night!   That has not stopped me from pressing on with the 60503 b

2mmFS Thoughts on a Layout

Over recent days, I have been thinking about the type of layout that I eventually want to build. As I already have the beginings of a GWR BLT in P4, I wanted something a little different but still a GWR branch line theme (I have a fondness of tank and small tender engines), I also want something that could be built in a reasonably short space of time, and hopefully even exhibit. However, I did not want another BLT, so my thoughts have wandered towards a through station of some sort - I even co

A pile of old rubbish or a jig

Hands up who got it right; yes, spot on it’s a jig! I can remember in my starting years – modelling that is – I was frightened away by some of the engineering jargon, and I was training as an engineer, so I know that it can be even worse for those not involved in engineering. What it really is, is a bit of scrap MDF, four screws, a bit of scrap brass strip and a few veneer pins, all cobbled together to make a devise which will hold bits together while they are soldered together. A bit of

Track Plan changed again!

I thought I'd settled on the final track plan - until Ian Allen posted a 1:5 double slip in O gauge on the Templot forum. Why didn't I think of this in the first place? When Martin advised me that a 1:4 would not be practical I went for a 1:6.   So, have a go I thought. This meant that most of the layout had to be redrawn, including the position of the 1:5 turnout leading to the goods shed and of course the run-round turnout was made a 1:5 too.   here's the final, final plan. It's got to be

N Gauge Tank Loco With Sound

This took a bit of squeezing. It's the Zimo MX648R and a Dapol M7 chassis with a tidied up Highfield G5 body kit on top modified to fit. The speaker and decoder just about fit in the back of the loco although it's a very tight squeeze.     Pardon the lousy camera work   http://vimeo.com/36930371

IKEA APA boxes for West Cromwell Road?

Recently I've been giving thought to what to use for the boards/storage for West Cromwell Road.   I had initially thought about using a combination of plywood and foamboard. Whilst this would be very light, with my health, it'll require more effort and time. I intend to use it for the Chilmark layout however as the IKEA APA boxes I've decided upon wouldn't be suitable for that layout.   So, yes, I've decided to go down the IKEA APA box route. As they're cheap (£10.99 each) and not very big

Moving to P4 (Post 3)

I started by applying Butanone glue to the bottom right chair and moved it along using the triangular gauge and the '+1' roller gauge, poking sleepers and chairs into place and gluing along the way, about 1/3 along I gauged and glued the far bottom left chair and then jumped a few at a time becasue the triangular gauge gauges a few at a time whilst widening slightly on the curve. As I was doing this I would move the roller gauge back every now and then to test the alignment, occassionally I got

West Cromwell Road Stock thoughts...

Been giving some though to West Cromwell Road again today, whilst not being able to get much else done due to being too ill. The main stock/train movements is going (possibly) to consist of: LT pannier tank (ex-GWR 57xx) Rolls-Royce/Sentinel (0-6-0DM (Judith Edge Kits) [3 aquired by LT 1971, one a Lillie Bridge, replaced Panniers] Ballast motor/battery loco with engineers train stock (ballast hoppers, crew carriage) Pilot motor Weed killing train/de-icer Breakdown/recovery trai

DCC and other modern technologies…

The plan for all layout ideas is that DCC will be the plan from the start. The initial cost is higher, but the ease of wiring, and the simplicity and much better ability to operate wins it for me. Being able to control the layout with a computer running software like JMRI or similar appeals [...]   Source

OO, EM or P4?

When originally planning about 5-10 years ago a layout based around the Bricklayer’s Arms area of South London (an idea that might be re-visited at some point, it just became too complex an idea to ever go beyond planning for us both sadly, but the research was fun!!) we (Natalie and myself) were going to [...]   Source

Moving to P4 (Post 2)

Pasted from Scaleforum   Curves. I still don't really know what I'm doing. I gtot a 4ft bit of cotton today, selotaped it to a pen at the bottom and then drew a few passes on an A4 sheet of paper. Had no bigger. The line wasn't always in the same place but I kinda got the idea. I am not sure how to build the rails curved, i did originally bend the rail before sliding the chairs on but then ended up straightening it again to build it straight on the (properly scaled this time!) straight

Me and my big mouth - a new local show for Derbyshire!

Me and my big mouth!   My South Derbyshire school is celebrating its 5th anniversary in its new building this year. As part of the celebrations we have set up a fundraising drive in order to pay off our remaining share of the cost of the new build. The headteacher had asked for fundraising ideas. I have run many a quiz night for the school over the last few years and I am sure I will be doing another one before the summer. But apparantly we need more events. Well I said it didn't I? I made t

The plan starts again

I am currently clearing the basement ready to set up baseboards for my proper layout. The image shows what I hope will be the basics of the station.     I plan to have only the ends of the platforms visible, with the rest of the station implied while the tracks curve round to continue the continuous run.   It is going to be wired with overhead at least in due course, as I want to run electrics. I have plenty of pictures of Crewe with steam under wires, so I can simply extrapolate that t

(Almost) finishing with the turnouts

I've finished with the turnouts. The next step, after taking the whole assembly off the Sundeala board, will be to cut all the gaps in the rails and, using an ohmmeter, check for short-circuits.   I'd like to highlight the usefulness of the roller gauges and the Bar file 0.020" thick for installing the switch blades / wing rails.   I   In my opinion one can survive without jigs or other helpers, but these gauges are absolutely the bare necessities for turnout building.   And the result

Fitting the uncouplers for Pen Mill

Now the three main station area boards for Yeovil Pen Mill are complete, which are only 13ft of the whole 38 ft run, we have started fitting the uncouplers before laying track. Kadee electromagnetic units are being fitted and the holes for the 13 needed for these three boards have been cut. They are being installed to be completely invisible under the track, rather than the way we have used them on Bath Green Park. There, only two of the four field plates have been used and are visible between

Slow week…

So today has been a bit of a slow week. Monday my best friend Natalie popped over and we discussed West Cromwell Road and the plans there of. We also watched on of the Model Rail DVDs (loco detailing iirc), which I found quite good, though it felt a little short, but that might just [...]   Source

    • Next step completed after the six needed for a track gang have been painted and their foot pedestals clipped off. They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!

Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
