Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Modelling Frogemere

Hello,   Today's will be a fairly brief descriptive entry, since I still don't have anything to actually "show".   GWR 57XX Panier has been successfully purchased and should leave Normanton, West Yorkshire tomorrow. Several Scalescenes kits have been acquired and downloaded (will be working on one later this evening).   Took lunch in the office today and doodled on a possible track plan, using "Wood End" as an inspiration. I'm pleased so far and am intent on creating a scale drawing which

Deltic in action

It’s been a while since the last post, life has just been too hctic over the last 3 weeks or so. In the absence of being able to write something meaningful I thought I’d share some Deltic footage I found … Continue reading →   Source

Roxey Summers Iron Ore Hopper part 4 - Chassis 2.

More work on the chassis, and a good deal of swearing... The underframe bottom plate needs to have the bufferbeams removed. This particular operation needs a lot of care as the ends are quite delicate. I tried to 'score and snap' along the half etched bend line but this resulted in deforming the etch, not too badly that it coudn't be tweaked back. I managed it in the end but its probably better to use a piercing saw... Before soldering the plate in place I drilled two holes either side of the

Lighting the way

So, you've bought your APA box and built a layout inside it. Beautiful it is. So you pop the lid on the APA to finish it off and Lo and behold your wonderful creation is plunged into darkness! But fear not those wonderful folks at IKEA have created whole systems of lighting suitable for the purpose. Strip lights, spotlights and LED's are all there to be used and like the APA box, reasonably priced. For my APA box I chose the INREDA 22" It comes with all the fixtures and fittings needed as well

2mmFS Boiler Fittings Without A Lathe

A little more progress with the Metro Tank. I have now made some of the boiler fittings (Dome and Safety Valve cover). Unfortunately, I do not possess or have access to a lathe so these have been turned up in an electric drill using needle files.   To produce the parts, I used an electric drill, a vice (big enough to hold the drill), various needle files, wet and dry emery paper, and a vernier caliper.   The material used is 1/4" round bar, chosen because the widest point on the Dome (the

Hafod Las Mk. III - a Narrow Gauge layout of two halves

First, a bit of background:   The first two (never finished) incarnations of Hafod Las were based around a fictional quarry workshop loosely in the style of Red Lion level at Penrhyn; Gilfach Ddu; and the Mills Tramroad at Dinorwic, with a reasonable dollop of modeller's licence and Rule #1 (IMTS) thrown in. HL1 was an ironing board layout started as a distraction from my final year of university and the build is described on RMweb3 here - the layout became rather knocked about in my initial p

Illness stops play

There is a saying in Cricket ‘Rain stops play’. [i don't like or watch cricket myself]. In my case, recently it has been my ill health that really is stopping play. Too much pain, too tired all the time and not sleeping well don’t make for making even the slightest attempts at doing any kind [...]   Source

Sitting on G..., Waiting for O.....

Hello--Had hoped to be in receipt of more tangible items today, but that was not to be. What was received or obtained today:   --A nice note from Parkside Dundas identifying the specific chassis needed for an interesting body kit. Saved me the cost of the kit, since the chassis is near unobtainable.   --A nice note from Gaugemaster indicating my order had been despatched. (I don't think I earlier mentioned my order from Langley, still in transit. Originally thought I had the correct chassi

Ambridge dairy is no more...

The scene modelled for the 2010 Competition that is... We have to have our old house including (obviously) the workshop, and as previously mentioned this scene will not fit in the new room. So having saved the dairy itself, the rest of the scene now awaits a trip to the recycling centre :-(   Ah well, scope for improvement anyway! There wont be any more blog updates on all three this week - too busy moving!   Regs   Ian

Class 47 detailing project. Conversion of Bachmann 47. "A P4 Brush 4". Part 2

Some progress has been made on the “Brush 4â€, to the extent that I think the “body†is now done. The main area of focus has been around the front ends, in a bid to try and make the model look a bit more like the prototype. As I’m sure I mentioned before I’d acquired some Extreme Etchings Class 47 windscreen surround etches... and very nice these are too. So I wanted to use these and soon realised that these would be quite a bit bigger than the Bachmann openings so an improved look cou

Hotel Royale - Ready for Installation

Work continues to get the layout ready for the Nottingham show. For my own part I've finally completed work on the Hotel Royale and its neighbouring houses.     As those who know the real thing may notice, I have omitted the glazed 'sun deck' over the entrance that existed in the 1960s and 70s and backdated the building to its original form. Due to lack of photos, I have had to speculate a little on how the entrance might have looked before this was added. In particular I have assumed that

A Philosophical Discourse

Against "Philosophy" the OED quotes "seeking after wisdom or knowledge2. Well I've certainly been doing that since I was unable to accept the J10 rear splashers looked like those in pictures of a J10.   Because of my modelling philosophy which has developed into "copy everything exactly to a ratio of 76.2:1 if physics and engineering limitations will allow", I've run into problems. Any genuine finescale modeller worth his salt knows that physics in general does not allow total accuracy in such

All in a day's work, Part 2 (1914)

"Surely you do not intend to transport my prize-winning champion in that ?!". Mr Bull looked incredulously at Woodcourt, the Station Master of Farthing.         Woodcourt was acutely aware that the situation required all his diplomatic skills. "I'm afraid this is our only option" he replied "and we do convey horses in cattle vans quite frequently. The sheeting will keep her from panicking." He decided not to mention that the only horses ever carried in cattle vans

"Mis-identity change! A4 Pacifics"

It's been a while between blog entries this month, mostly because I've spent an inordinate amount of time sleeping when at home. The traveling is finally starting to get to me! But I cannot complain because I like my job and it pays well for the time I put in. However with the tiredness, comes mistakes, and for anyone who has a copy of RCTS volume 2A, you'll spot the mistake which creeped into my modelling this month in about three paragraphs time.   I choose to relate it here, because in a no

Welshpool in the Mailbox

Just a brief followup to the earlier entry---   The first item arrived. A lovely reprint map taken from the Ordnance Survey topographic series (as revised in 1904 and updated in 1912), showing the area in and around Welshpool. Of most interest to me is the information I can glean about the "town route" of the Welshpool and Llanfair eastward from the present W&L station to the Raven Square Station.   Although I do not anticipate modelling (or having room to model) the entire now nonexist

A little more on the kit.

Greetings.   Just a few extra details added this evening, before quitting to watch Whitechapel. This is a very detailed kit - far too so for me, personally, as it requires soldering under magnification of some very fiddly detail. My eyes are just not that good anymore! The etches though are astonishing in terms of quality.   I found the tiny (.3mm) holes in the chassis for the brake wire too close to the driving wheels. When I tried slotting a piece through it actually rotated with the whe

Trowell, Ilkeston, Derbyshire

Well I managed it! Four weekends in February and four model railway shows visited,.....and my wife is still talking to me! Result!!!   This is another small show, but I really did enjoy it. Lots of very good layouts to enjoy. The club's own model of Ilkeston Town station in 00 gauge was excellent a really good depiction of the branch line terminus from the days of the LMS. The scenics were excellent. The Soar Valley M.R.C layout, Aylett End, is one I have seen a couple of times before. It i

What Have I Gotten Myself Into ?---

It's late Monday afternoon here in the eastern US and I'm wondering what, if anything , the postman will have brought that carries a British postmark. After pursuing modelling various US prototypes over the past 50+ years, I've taken the plunge into OO gauge, and am awaiting the start of a veritable deluge of materials, both OO and OO9 in nature.   Even the beginning of this journey has not been without both worry and wonder. For example--   My kind credit card issuer suspended my ability t

Gauny no dae that

I'm pleased to say that the Glasgow show was better than last year's, which was hopefully just a blip in the year-on-year improvement. Well done to all concerned. As usual it was great to meet up with old friends, and put some faces to new ones. Deviations on the way up included photting at Winwick Junction and Carlisle, and on the way back, Tower Models followed by fish & chips on the front at Blackpool!   Back in the sound lab the 73 diesel / electric transitions have been sorted out aft

Well Manored

This Blog entry is about making good a Bachmann Manor. It could equally well apply to an older Bachmann Hall and I dare say might also apply to Dapol / Hornby Counties, not to mention Granges and the new 28xx.     This view above is my version of the Cambrian Coast Express. I have fond memories of the ex GWR Manor Class engines and Dovey Junction. As mentioned elsewhere on this web site 'Dad and I' had a little look round Aberystwyth Shed in the very early 1960s and couldn't fail to be i

    • Next step completed after the six needed for a track gang have been painted and their foot pedestals clipped off. They will be fitted to the club layout (Axford) as a spot sleepering gang.   First lesson learnt by the experience - it will be easier in future to trim the foot block and drill for the pins before doing the painting.   The reason for the track gang is the l/hand divergent track on this board no longer goes anywhere as it now feeds a single entry sector plate. The
    • This is fabulous Mike.   Thanks for sharing your techniques and it looks stunning in the setting - as Mikkel says, my kinda place!   A nice story and I do hope that they have success.   Love it in BR blue mode too 😀
    • Thankyou for the info.I want a British car but French or American would be OK. My "Dr" from Motley End could do with one of those modern contraptions! Railway modelling causes us all to be very aware of every aspect of life in our chosen era. Its part of the attraction. I could give your Postman a lesson or two in handling parcels also!
    • Thank you Chris and Mike for the input on wording, "motor cars" it is then.   Douglas those 1960s car rallys sound good. There's an annual vintage fair here in Denmark that we sometimes go to. Here's a 1926 Ford T from a couple of years ago.       Returning to the DAPR 3D prints, I have been in touch with Ben of DAPR. He says that they are still available if you enquire. He also has them with the roof drawn up, and in pickup versions.   He says he co
