Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Miniature Davenport 0-6-0 Diesel Shunter - A Profile

The Davenport-Type Co diesel shunter, the first miniature locomotive obtained for the line. Small but sprightly, it is powered by a three-pole motor, and has minimal low speed control as a result. A headlight (which needs replacing, though the locomotive operates perfectly well without it), bell and exhaust stack help to make this a unique and distinctive diesel shunter - a perfect locomotive to build the line and add to the flavour of the railway.     The side of the locomotive - detailing

Penmaenpool MPD

PENMAENPOOL MPD.   Now that Morfa Bach is nearing completion it's time to consider my options for board 2 of my new modular layout. This board (whatever the final decision) has got to fit next to Morfa Bach to provide a continuous run from fiddle yard to fiddle yard. Yet more scenic boards could be built, making the layout more flexible for exhibiting.   One option I am considering for module 2 is Penmaenpool MPD. Unlike most small steam sheds Penmaenpool was not located at a terminus, ne

Random Stone Walls

Random Stone Walls and Cover Stones. Step by step guide to building random stone walls from styrene sheet, the slow and hard way. This illustrated guide shows the methods  used to create walls on both Snitzl Town and a club layout by Ilkeston Woodside MRC of Kimberley Station, Notts.   The walls of Kimberley, as I call them, took about 8 months to complete. Not to be out done ,  Snitzl Town will have more.     Thanks for Looking.....

Bassetlaw Railway Society

I’m currently working for a client in Nottinghamshire, and this has me located in the Retford area most weeks. Last week I went along to the Bassetlaw Railway Society, and before the evening was out I’d paid my annual subs … Continue reading →   Source

Frustration!

Another week and another update. Things had been going so well. I had those layouts booked, trade stands sold, measurements and floor plan well on the way. I had even made a start on the show guide. I was feeling pretty pleased with myself! In the last week I even had another RMWebber contact me with an expression of interest in bringing a layout to the show. Oh and Derby beat Forest 1-0. Things really were going so well! But they say pride comes before a fall don't they? Just as the machine i

Rocky times

Here are some piccies of how the headland is looking at the moment with the initial batch of castings from my Bragdon Enterprise moulds after filling and carving.     As you'll see, the casting at the rear is full of cracks. This is because of the way I'm doing the casting. To save weight all castings are very thin (wafffer thin if you're a Monty Python fan) and are cast flat, then cracked to fit the foam scenic base beneath. Filler is then applied to the gaps and carved to shape.

Fools rush in

It's been a long while since anything was posted here - most of the modelling in 2011 was on the layout, where the bulk of the major work still outstanding was tackled , but some progress has recently been made on stock as I currently have a little spare time .   Firstly the Ratio Van B. Work resumed last Autumn , only for me to find that that I couldn't find the etched sheet . Eventually I swallowed hard and decided to improvise. This meant fabrication of replacement door hinges from microst

LNER Class A3 No.4472 'Flying Scotsman' - A Profile

No.4472 Flying Scotsman, as it currently exists today. A striking Gresley Pacific, and the only surviving member of its class, this locomotive was obtained in May of 2010 as a classic example of fine British steam. Strong and powerful, its fine form is represented well here, with its iconic profile being displayed in this photograph.   The side-view of the locomotive, showing the profile of this distinctive locomotive further. Though in some ways it is rather basic, in others it is well-deta

Ropley - Slow Progress

A 4MT hauled service departs Ropley heading for Alton.   Hi All.   Well, not a huge amount of progress to report just recently for various reasons, but mostly work related as usual! The backscene has had its first coat of white applied, and a template has been made for the top of the embankment, although I really need to get back to the real location to work out the exact lay of the land behind the tree line along with the exact location of the footbridge.   You may remember a few entr

Preparing for the Palace

That's Alexandra Palace and the London Festival of Model Railways next weekend.   So, time to take Fen End Pit out of the cupboard under the stairs where it resides and do a few 'pre-fight checks'. Fortunately the whole layout goes up in our back room with the kind permission of the domestic authorities.     A quick bit of scenic work with a hoover, removing the spiders, was followed up with a new coat of paint on the backscene and on the facia panel. The work then turned to the stock, fi

A Grand Two Days Out

Just back from St Ruth's first 'real' outing at the Nottingham show. I really enjoyed myself and I think the rest of the team did too.   It was really nice to be in a 2mm finescale 'ghetto' surrounded on three sides by Fencehouses, Brafferton and Annedale Town. At times the number of 2mm Association faces in attendance made me wonder if we weren't at a 2mm Expo. The quality of the whole show was well up to its usual standard - this is a show that I attend as a 'punter' pretty much every year b

Rip Off Grass Application tool

I bought the £20 version of the GrassTech Grass applicator in December and I've not seen sight or sound of it. Luckerly I paid with my credit card so I've let them sort it out. I now have two questions. Do the Large publications Railway Modeller, British Railway Modelling, etc which this chap has advertised with know he doesn't deliver? Secondly how many other people have been ripped off by this chap? I'm expecting the answers to be No and Lots.

Nottingham

After a weekend off from show visits I managed to head over to the Nottingham event on Saturday. I really enjoyed this show when I visited for the first time last year and had been looking forward to it all week. (And that had nothing to do with the Rams win over Forest you understand!!)   Perhaps the organisers needed to help fund some new players for the City Ground. I did think that the £8.00 entry fee was quite expensive. I know hiring the hall and bringing in layouts may not be cheap an

Another complete (in itself) loco collection possibility now - part 2

Following on from my entry last week, I've identified other possibilities only a few miles away from my initial choices: Seacombe - Wirral Rly with GCR running rights Bournemouth West - LSWR with S & D running rights   I'm always looking for synergies with my existing fleet and can now see another nucleus forming around pre-WW2 era in Norfolk. I already own a B12/3, B17/4 and J17, but tonight I came across a large number of images of Midland & Great Northern (M&GN) locos taken pr

Bluebell Class A1X 'Terrier' No.55 'Stepney' - A Profile

Class A1X No.55 Stepney, as it arrived in July 2011, is coupled to the Bluebell's Maunsell high-window brake coach No.6575. The detail on these items is stunning when viewed up close and, even though the price was a bit steep for what was received, it must be said that the level of detail is enough that it is somewhat justified.     The traditional profile of No.55. The details on this model, despite its origins as a Dapol locomotive from the 1980s, are very good. Separately fitted handrail

Modified NWR Class E2 No.1 'Thomas' - A Profile

No.1, 'Thomas.' The world-famous tank engine has made appearances everywhere - so not much more needs to be said or seen here. I will, however, say that the drivetrain in this engine is definitely NOT up to par with Hornby's offerings - Hornby may be more expensive and not as accurate in television-series looks, but its powertrain and performance, traction-tire or no, is far better than this locomotive.     The side view, showing the exemplary looks of the locomotive.     The rear view

BR 'Castle' Class 4073 No.5053 'Earl Cairns' - A Profile

No.5053 Earl Cairns. A truly spectacular locomotive from any angle, this one was obtained in 2011 from the annual railway exhibition - with a markdown of 33% off the initial cost! Naturally I swooped in to pick it up, passing upon the Class 9F for another time. The locomotive has no extra detail fitted at this time - it hardly needs it, when one looks at its shape and fine livery application.     The nameplate, in true Swindon fashion. One decent thing to point out is that the locomotive is

Bristol Barrow Road - an interlude

On friday my former LMS crab returned from the Severnside Works paintshop for a test run up the main line. Formerly 2798 it has re-emerged as BR 42763. Here are some before and after photos.         The Hawksworth coach is a modified Hornby with drop in P4 wheelsets and has been weathered for it's owner, Morgan, by Gerry Beale.   Another visitor was a Gresley RB dia 167 in BR rebuilt form which Morgan has started to build for the Bradford train.         And finally a shot o

Starting point

Like many, no doubt I have been thinking up ideas for layouts for years without actually getting as far as making a real start on any before moving on to the next idea. Until now I have satisfied my desire to run stock by making use of layouts at my railway club or using the "test track" that I have constructed in the loft at home. Originally this "test track" was meant to be a layout, but a combination of mistakes and over ambition has consigned it to being a 24 foot by 10 foot double line oval

Chivers SECR J Class - painted

The loco has now been painted. First several coats of dark grey (not black) paint and a red buffer beam. The Vallejo red paint covered incredibly well - two coats were enough to get decent coverage. The loco is modelled on a photo in the Bradford Barton album on Wainwright locos showing it in Southern livery, but recently renumbered with it's BR number which is still pretty clean. I added the HMRS southern lettering before doing any weathering to get this effect. The light colour streaks (

More shunter progress

The 04 now has a full set of handrails and some Markits sprung oval buffers.I think the buffer heads project too far forward, so some packing is needed at their rear to reduce this. The Southern 03s have larger airtanks in front of the cab, compared to the ones on the Bachmann model. The replacements on my 03 were made from Evergreen plastic tube with the domed ends filed and sanded to shape from 40 thou sheet. They are glued to the cab front (as were the original ones) - the model splits in
