Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Bananas for Painting

I’m waiting for some araldite to cure on the fifth Banana van, - you remember, the one that is having a sprung chassis.   There’s no doubt that araldite is one of the finest adhesives, particularly the old fashioned 24 hour type, but that curing time and lack of initial grip can be a pain. In today’s case the araldite’s job is to fix a lead weight to the plastic body of the van as a part-floor. The weight is drilled and tapped for 8BA and as the thread in lead is likely to strip, an 8B

The first run of the year and some coaches

Hi all   You may have noticed that the last week has probably been rather damp underfoot. But last weekend, for a few glorious hours it wasnt too bad.   Our first proper run of the year (yes i know its april already!) saw us go down to swindon track, in coate water country park.     Each year they hold two 5 inch open days for just 5 inch gauge engines, we've been along to a few now, and each time taken a load of wagons. We meet up with a few mates from the area and have a bit of a run.

Sunday Smog

120428_4-track_DSC_4215_BW, a photo by nevardmedia on Flickr. Sunday morning's bit of silliness is the replication of a stretch of mainline in South Wales with an ex-GWR pannier tank in possession of a rake of empties just having left the mainline. The 9F flying along behind has a load of freshly filled wagons heading for somewhere distant or maybe just Cardiff Docks.   Sunlight has just started to penetrate the fog and pollution – also known as smog it was a typical feature of industrial B

Getting Back To The Scenery!

Much of my occasional modelling of late has been very much CAD based, with lots of staring (and occasionally muffled swearing) at a computer screen! These projects are making good progress, with a new 'face' for the bridge and a fresh N gauge Class 139 currently in the works at Shapeways. I hope to have the new 'Parry' 139 ready for the DEMU Showcase event at Burton to run the branchline service on 'Kinlet Wharf'.. fingers crossed.   I am also making progress on designs for boilers and associa

Hornby Legends - GWR Nunney Castle

Due to the lack of information available on this range of models which include: GWR Castle class, 4073 Nunney Castle BR 9F, 92220 Evening Star LNER A1, 4472 Flying Scotsman LNER A4, 4468 Mallard Have I missed any?   These are all DCC ready and appear to be of the railroad range.     Nunney Castle comes with a Limited Edition certificate, information booklet, decoder sleeve and locomotive with tender.   This houses the motor and DCC decoder (when installed)

2mmFS 3D Printing : GWR Outside Framed Brake Van (Part 1)

Another few blissful happy hours playing with SketchUp has resulted in another model almost ready to go off to Shapeways. This time I'm trying to tackle a GWR Outside Framed Brake Van. The body work is now complete, but I intend drawing up the solebars and headstocks so that all I'll have to do is add the W Irons, springs, axleboxes, brake gear, buffers, foot boards and the handrails.   The images below show screen shots of the Brake Van in SketchUp.     I don't know whether they will

Another complete (in itself) loco collection possibility now - part 4

I've posted this photo of my acquisitions to show what progress has been made.   The first loco bought out of those three in this photo is a pre-owned GER J17 0-6-0 bought off an auction site about two years ago. It's a BEC white metal kit using a Triang-Hornby chassis, painted in GER passenger/mixed traffic livery by its previous owner. This was bought for my collection because the preserved J17 was based at Norwich in its final years of service when my mum and late gran lived at the time.

Update

It's been a very busy few weeks. Not all model railroad related. Things were coming along very nicely with the APA box layout then we had a flooding in our basement. Luckily the layout was not damaged but quite some time was spent sorting the mess out. Which, of course left me precious little time to get the layout ready for the Granite City Train Show. I kinda sorta had it ready to exhibit. There was a bit of a bodge job in the fiddle yards but everything worked OK on the day and the layout imp

Starting out again

Hi all,     Initial try outs on site good, got kits from scale scenes re canals etc. thanks for all help on this. Just been looking at grass and weeds etc.   I have been going through all the packed away for long time boxes and have found many items I thought had been thrown out!!     I went to the show at the Secc in Scotland a few months ago with long time freind and bought Power cab DCC kit and converters, big change from my beginnings as being an electrician to trade, I spent most o

O Gauge Sentinel #3

More progress!   The solebars were bent to shape using nothing more than a vice and two steel rules as bending bars then they were joined to the buffer beams using 188 deg solder. The angle plates were then added using 145 deg solder. You will see from the photo that the ends of the angle plates stuck out beyond the edge of the buffer beam - soon sorted with a file!     This assembly was then fitted to the superstructure and the buffers added.     Starting to look like a Sentinel now

Signal Box Windows.

Constructing Signal Box Windows for Snitzl Town.   For completeness, part 2 of windows for Snitzl shows one of the way's to create  signal box style windows. It looks quite nice, but it's a little on the bold side. This method uses a digital vernier to accurately position the rule when marking and cutting.     Thanks for Looking..

City of London ready for painting

This is my first blog entry. Hope I've got the hang of it!   After what seems like an eternity, 46245 City of London is ready for the paintshop. The last few snags were sorted today. The first problem was rough running and I sorted this out with a drop of oil on the gears and driving wheel axles. The other issue was that the loco was getting jammed on curves. I finally found that the front wheels of the bogie were catching against the front footstep. This was mainly because the bogie was mount

Slow progress

OK been a while since my first post. I have made a fair bit of progress on the first bogie, the brass chassis is now soldered together & I have started soldering the white metal sideframes & details together. Most of my time has been spent cleaning up the flash off the brass & whitemetal sections, and making sure all is square.   I used some small needle files for removing most of the flash on the brass, and also a piercing saw for some of the larger pieces. There is a LOT of flash

Update 08 ---- one more thing....

Just when you thought I'd completed the trackwork, I thought - how about a     narrow-gauge industrial feeder? Got to have somewhere to put the wired loco that might form part of the comp? It's (nominally) at 2' gauge with 'Peco' code 60 soldered to PCB strip. The 'tramway' effect is formed by laying more 'Code 60' on its side butted against the running rail. However, expectations must not be raised too high - it will be non-working!     No - just buried, not covered in snow! The

"Pathfinder & Gresley A4s"

So the decision has been made - I'm going to do a short section of an in the planning stage "modular" layout, and the idea is to represent certain locations on the Leeds-London main line. With each section hopefully one day being built up into a fully functioning layout.   With that in mind, I have started drawing up more plans (!), this time for curtailing my rampant spending on locomotives (with only four purchases planned for this year now), and concentrate on building up a few authentic o

O Gauge Sentinel #2

Rapid (for me) progress today.   The bends went really well, after much agonizing and worry over getting these right they just fell into place using a 3.5mm rod held in the vice and the brass bent over it using my fingers.   Soldered to the soleplate using 145 deg solder it's starting to look like a Sentinel now     Now, here's where I have had to "modify" the kit as there seems to be two variants of the Lima 0-4-0 drive unit, one a central ringfield and another with the ringfield over

Progress Report

Been a while since I posted an update on Fourgig East, so here goes:   Cork trackbed has been glued to baseboard #3 and since the photo below I have cut the cork away to clear the tiebars on the switches and drilled holes for the track droppers.     I have also been busy with the woodwork. Both end protectors have been made, dowelled and toggle catches fitted so the basic 16" x 2' x 4' box is made. I have set the boards further apart so that the 10" high backscenes do not overlap the edge

Warren Shephard O Gauge Sentinel

As the ABS Wagon is done and now to something to pull it. I bought a Lima diesel shunter cheaply off the forum some time ago, so it has donated it's chassis to the project.   Here's what you get with the kit, basically two sheets of etches, although I bought some buffers for it at the same time       As Fourgig is supposed to be a heritage railway I wanted to model a preserved Sentinel and GWR #2 "Isebrook" was an obvious choice. Here's the first problem with the kit - Isebrook has the

improvements, design changes, failures, successes and experiments

It has been some time since my last post. During that time there have been various improvements, design changes, failures, successes and experiments on the electrics underneath the layout. I have still not quite finished, but I do have a working system again.   The original plan was to use Merg Servo4 kits to drive micro servos controlling points and permanent magnet uncouplers. A temporary switch box connected to the 25-way connector on the layout operated the individual points and un

Greenery Coming

I am taking a break from scribing the paving for my platforms. Just for a change the weather here in the south of Scotland might have been better than down in England. So, a chance to do some gardening!     Yes, the greenery will be coming, but probably later in the year. (Well hopefully much later if we don't have a repeat of last year.) We have a square of lawn in mind plus a vegetable patch.     Gardens do take a lot of time, especially when there are model railways to attend to

Moving to P4 (Post 12)

Ok, new update. Apart from the stretcher bars and TOU (took me months to find out what that meant) and the need to add the fshplates to the removable section again, it is pretty much complete. Both my test trucks run through it fine, one is that sprung cattle wagon in progress and the other is a Hornby 'Thomas Tank' truck with the wheels swapped for pinpoint axle P4, that's currently it, not even inserted cup bearings yet and as result the wheels don't spin perfectly on one pivot, the bob kind

Another complete (in itself) loco collection possibility now - part 3

Last Sunday I attended Scaleforum North in Wakefield, this was my first visit to such an event and information gathering continued for this planned loco collection.   From two traders I bought postcard prints of the following:   Three prints of the Wirral Rly (ex-L & Y) 2-4-2T no.6, two showing how it was lined out and numbered in its pre-grouping style, it had a brass numberplate on the centre of each of its side tanks, and the other in its LMS no. 6762 condition; One print of a Midland

Heathley Kirkgate MK2 - Baseboard Construction

Well I picked up Templot surprisingly quickly, more by trial and error than actually sitting down and learning the thing! After a few days I managed to come up with this track plan.     Happy with it, baseboards were planned out and I went off to buy some plywood. At this point I was three weeks into the project so my initial target to start building boards by the end of March had been met.   The scenic area will be split into two baseboards. Board 1 will be 5' 8" and contains the more op
