Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

WEP 7mm GWR Fruit D

After yesterdays entry this appeared to be a logical next entry. I gave you all a glimse of my Fruit D yesterday, so here's some more details.   I built this last November, most of the construction being done during a couple of days during a weeks holiday. There was one particularly memorable session during which I had the 1980 film The Sea Wolves featuring Gregory Peck, Roger Moore, David Niven, Trevor Howard and Patrick McNee on in the background. Like the Siphon G I didn't complete the pain

A week on the 'Valley (Indoors and Out)

In my last entry (which I slightly lost track of by posting it in the wrong blog!) I promised that my Victoria Bridge diorama would be appearing at the SVR behind the scenes weekend. Having a small local exhibition to aim at was an excellent encouragement to get the 'bridge working if not entirely finished, presentation wise.   In the end, the weekend was a perfect test run with a number of RMWebbers to say hello to as well.   I did my best to assemble stock that matched, or sort of almost m

Point Motors.

Designing a point motor for Snitzl.   To start with, I looked through all my early magazines for idea's on point motors and  came across an article from Sep 76 Model Railway titled 'A Revolutionary Point Motor ' by John Popkin. The snitzl design was to be a development of that design, but combined a sliding mechanism and point motor into one unit.   The design looked so straight forward that I went ahead and made enough components for twenty units. Some of the components ie w

7mm Scorpio Outside Framed Siphon G

Evening all,   I've been considering starting a blog on here for a while and Wenlock's enthusiasm to see photo's of my Siphon G has propmted me to start. My workbench thread will continue to document my larger builds and this blog I plan to use to show my small and past builds.   The Siphon G was pretty simple to put together, just a bit time consuming because the sides are made up from several overlays. The olny change I made to the standard kit was to replace the corridor connectors with t

Summer arrives...

and with it time to complete the ballasting and adding some sculptamold to flat bits and slopey bits alike, with the opportunity of getting in some good quality drying time.   Ballasting.   Aaarrgg!! What IS it about Easitrac and getting effective ballasting! i know now, I've worked it out. The sleepers at an accurate 0.82mm are too shallow to hold the ballast well. By comparison, Code 55 is easy to get to look good., being a whopping overscale 1 foot 6 inches deep - and so holds the bal

Time Travelling Equine Transport - Back Dating and Detailing The N Gauge Lima Horsebox - Part 2.

More work on the horsebox. I had hoped to make some more progress but it has been too hot and sticky to spend time upstairs in front of a window that looks west on an evening! I did manage to get some of my UPOs (un-painted objects) undercoated as a result of the hot weather allowing access to the garden without fear of disaster so it's not all bad.   The end steps were added next. I thinned down some styrene angle to something like the correct dimensions so that steps could be cut uniformly t

Cheslyn - Hacking at the backscene

Been off line for a while as the veg patch and garden have had to come first. Mind you, given the awful wet weather here it has been a bit of a waste of time.   I've returned to the model for a bit of light relief and decided to hack off a couple of inches from the back scene as I was disappointed with the look of it when it was first attached. I only ever wanted gentle rolling hills in the distance and not the mountains of the previous version. This is part of the build process I suppose

Platform contruction, Point rodding and Signal

Good morning all, just a few photos to show the progress over the last few days.   I've started to build the platform and installed the new Dapol signal. I'll probably replace this with a MSE signal in the future but for the time begin I think these signals look very much the part.   The platform needs a good weathering and I still need to add brickwork.   I've completed the track weathering, just want to add a bit more detail by painting some sleepers as if they had been recently replaced

Castles in the Air - further observations on the Hornby New Castle

Some six months have elapsed since my Blog entry here commenting on the Hornby New Castle:     In fact I have acquired three or four models, all 'new' and with one exception, all from UK retailers. During this time I have been able to run the different engines and make a few adjustments.     First a view of Hornby's all purpose nylon washer or spacer. Apparently they are used to position the front bogies on the Schools Class. They are used here on the New Castle to pack the gear tr

On the fiddle again !

Thank goodness for some decent weather so work can be continued outside on the East fiddle yard for my new Cambrian modular layout "Steam on the Cambrian". Those who have read my first post on this subject will know that the layout requires two such fiddle yards, one at each end of the modules. Both fiddle yards will consist of a three road turn table so that complete trains can be turned at each end without having to lift off any stock or cassettes. Today's progress on the east fiddle yard i

GWR 6 wheel Siphon

Built from a Slaters Plastikard kit, with the addition of some white metal milk churns. I can't remember who made the churns, but the Slaters kit went together beautifully! I really like non passenger brown vehicles, so I'm planning on building a number more for my GWR Edwardian branch line.     I'm still busy beavering away building points for the project, I wasn't sure how much I'd enjoy it, but it's turned out to be very satisfying. Each one is taking about a week of model

dubya dubya dubya...

My fellow Americans   Whilst a little more detailing progress has taken place the last few days, I will wait until I return from the UK to add a blog entry to cover those.   Meanwhile, when I first found and joined the RMweb (circa 2009 I think) my very first entry to introduce myself and the layout gave a link to a freebie website that I had previously set up. As the addiction of RMweb gradually followed the website was neglected in favour of a RM layout thread which eventually became this

Selected BRB diagram books index.

Hello.   Something that I have been doing for myself is building an index of the contents of the BRB diagram books on the Barrowmore Model Railway Group website.   My main interest is wagons, so that is where I have started. So far I have indexed books 300 (part 1), 320 (parts 1-3) and PO Stock (parts 1-3).   This was done with the thought of kit building, kit bashing or scratch building stock from common components e.g. if I have a particular underframe available then what can I put on to

update

Greetings.   Last night I installed two electromagnets and wired them to two push to make switches, which Have been added to the front switch plate. I have had these for a while in my box, and was looking for an opportunity to try them out. I also have an unused memory wire kit, so might have a play and use this for the signal.   Installing the magnets was fairly straightforward - or it was until I realised I didn't need to drill right through the baseboard and sleepers to install them. Ex-GER J15

One of four (yes, four) Great Eastern S23 tenders passing through the Works. This is tender No.7886 of 1890 and will be coupled up to a steam-braked J15 by the end of the week once the drybrushing and final weathering is completed.     The basis is the tender from the Connoisseur kit, but that only caters for the post-1893 tenders with sausage-shaped lightening holes in the frames. Earlier tenders had the D-shaped slots illustrated, so I had new frames drawn up in TurboCad and etched.   I

An Ivatt N1 for Heathley Kirkgate - Part 2

Well, my i-materialise 3d-printed Ivatt N1 prototype arrived much sooner than I anticipated and so with some trepidation I opened the box and removed the rather extensive packaging. Phew! It's in one piece! and Wow! It looks like an N1! where the first thoughts to enter my head.   The model is remarkably sturdy with a slight level of flexibility not dissimilar to a RTR body. The level of detail is quite impressive although a couple of the very small parts are a little vague and fuzzy. I knew I

Foxfield

And so the school summer holidays are finally here, and whilst many parents are dreading the next six weeks, this particular teaching parent is relishing the time to spend it with wife, new daughter and also on some serious model railway work. For me there is my home layout, Skaleby, to continue with and also my show layout, Skaleby West. Lots to do. On top of this I always try to make the most of the summer break and visit as many preserved railways as I can, and get in as many steam hauled mil

shifting earth

Well sculptamold - eventually!   Work since last blog:   - Levelling the area between the lowered level of the siding and the wharf area. There is still a slight gradient trackside, but not really obvious. I used polyfilla and have rough painted this with brown acrylic.   - Adding a foamboard backscene, using formas and reverse knife cuts to curve it and glue-gunned it in place.   - Infilling the siding with polyfilla to represent ash and clinker. Stippling lightly with a brush while st

Summer module - ballasting

I kicked off the ballasting on the summer module with this short stretch over the culvert, which will be difficult to access once the road bridge is in place. As mentioned elsewhere, I now use Copydex rather than PVA, which retains a degree of resilience once it has dried, so that the ballasted roadbed still has some give in it. Other than that the process is the same; sprinkle down the ballast, mist over with water, then add the dilute Copydex solution through a pipette or eye-dropper. The resu

Talking Stock #13 Detailing the fleet of Lord Nelsons

In honour of Bradley Wiggins riding triumphantly into Paris yesterday as the first British victor of the Tour De France I thought it might be appropriate to look at the Maunsell Lord Nelson class…   Introduced by Maunsell in 1926 the four cylinder 4-6-0 locomotives had 6 ft 7 in diameter driving wheels, a boiler pressure of 220 lb psi and a tractive effort of 33500 lb that was the the highest of any British express passenger locomotive of the time. Bulleid improved the class by fitting Le

2mm LNWR diagram 88 van - finishing off

Since reaching the stage shown at the end of my last blog on this wagon, I did not make much progress while working on other projects but I continued looking for photographs, particularly of wagons in LMS livery.   At this point, my modelling took on rather masochistic tendancies as I realised from photographs that there seemed to be some sort of beading either side of the corner framework and also near the bottom of the wagon side. This seemed quite noticeable but was not allowed for on the
