Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Converting a Bachmann BR 03 Shunter chassis to fit inside a Craftsman BR 07 shunter

The running quality of my locos is important to me. Irrelevant of how well made they are or how detailed, if they cannot run along a piece of track smoothly or cross a point without stalling, then the loco is of little use to me.   The long suffering Craftsman BR 07     My BR Class 07 Shunter is one such loco that looks much better than it runs. This Craftsman kit was purchased partly completed in 2003. One of the areas completed was the chassis, which was quite jerky and the rods appeare

Camerton Goods Yard 2

For several months I've been thinking that I just need to do a little bit more to the west end of the Camerton layout then I'll be able to post a new entry on the blog. Looking back at the previous entry (way back in February), though, I reckon I've made a fair bit of progress so it's well past time for an update. First an overall 'warts and all' photo where you can see the yard and, beyond the bridge, the station area is covered in modelling materials.     I'm also beginning to make progre

Linking Up

One of the reasons I switched to 2FS was the ugliness of the rapido coupling. I'm still not sure there's a perfect solution for its replacement but what I have done, however, is got hold of some 3-link chain from Mathieson Models (usual disclaimer) which is designed to replace the coupler on their wagons. These can be used on many recent Farish wagons with only a modest amount of 'persuading' - simply unclip the coupler pockets, widen slightly if needed, and press the Mathieson coupler lugs int

Fisherton Sarum exhibiting at TaD-Rail this Saturday 13th October

Fisherton Sarum is making its last appearance of the year this coming Saturday 13th October at the Tring and District Model Railway Club’s Tad-Rail exhibition . This will be the first time that the changes to the control system for the turnouts (points), turntable and main line controllers will be used in anger, so I hope they all work especially as there is some last minute issues with the point control circuitry! (click the link here to read my blog posts on the changes),

Hornby Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 rebuild-Finescale it is not!

As some of you may be aware a mate of mine was given a box of tat-namely old 1970's/80's Hornby and Lima stuff. One of the locos was a badly repainted Hornby Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0. Now I'm fully aware of the misproportions of this model and it can never be compared to the current Bachmann RTR offering or the Comet kit but I thought using some bits and pieces I had to hand a few cosmetic adjustments could improve the look of this loco.   Also I have a real soft spot for these little Moguls and the

Class 47 detailing project. Conversion of Bachmann 47. "A P4 Brush 4". Part 5 – Bogies.... biting off more that I can chew ?

It’s been a while since I posted an update; sorry about that. I added some gallery photos, but I’ve missed out on the dialogue obtained from these great blogs... so hopefully this will be a start to remedy that. Life has been getting in the way of modelling... but given that “life” has included a couple of trips up to the ELR and some 2 and 4 stroke diesel encounters, and a model show or two, life’s not caused too much of a railway abstention.   Well, I started trying a light improvement to t

Starting motive power

Greetings.   After a pleasant morning at the 2mm Association AGM in Bedford, returning quite a few quid lighter with some 2mm bits and pieces; and a after pint with some of the lads over lunch followed by a quick market visit to keep the other half happy, I decided to make a tentative start on the Ratio 2-4-0 kit while listening to Forest beat Peterborough on the radio.   Getting the two boiler halves from the box, made me realise the old problem with having a join line running through chimne

New canopy structures

I can't claim any credit for the canopies themselves, just the mobile phone snaps - which at least enable 'ground level' photos to be easily achieved! After previous warping issues with wood and plasticard they have now been done in brass.   Other progress continues, 2 boards are now successfully wired, and we can run trains over them (DCC now) without resorting to the dog-on-a-lead approach.   I'll let the canopy photos speak for themselves:

Trevanion Dries Overview and Concept

Trevanion Dries is the name of a long-term project in 2mm finescale. It's an attempt to re-create the atmosphere of the railways in the clay country of South Devon and Cornwall primarily from my memories of growing up in the area in the mid-1990s. The period will cover the CDA hopper operation and Speedlink wagonload services of the late 80s and early 90s stretching through to the introduction of the first EWS-liveried Class 37s... roughly 1988-1997.   Trevanion Dries will be a small model of

The 100 quid 4mm challenge..

Greetings.   As some of you who follow my 2mm thread will know, the eyesight has leaned me more towards a larger scale in recent months, (though I have not given up the little ones either as I have invested a fair deal ). This second blog is to cover my efforts in a different scale.   I set to thinking about what I would really like in 4mm scale, and the idea of a small Midland Railway terminus/micro layout appealed. Even though the allure of sound chips eg in my Robinson is great, in the e

WEST COUNTRY (7)

Here we are still struggling on with this. It has been a nightmare trying just to find some time, as I am sorting out the shuttering for new stairs for the house. The architect cant draw them correctly and the builder cannot measure angles. I have spent most of the week showing them how they should be done. I did say to the wife it would of been quicker to let me build the house as I have done a few.   I have now taken the cab to bits 3 time. This was the second one.

Update   Good Afternoon - There's been progress of sorts, but most of this week down have been down with man flu...and reading that Scaleforum thread hasn't exactly been medicinal   To begin with, the turnout is virtually complete, bar wiring and mechanism (more on that in another entry) Note to self: When using an item of rolling stock to check/test running through the crossing, remember to first check the back to back's are right Yep...it's a ridiculous as that...ages trying to tweak smo

Silver Machine (Once upon a time!) The story of a resurrected Airfix Brake Van

Well fans of Ozzy and Hawkwind will be familiar with the title. Once more this has nothing to do this 1970's rock outfit. (He says listening to this song )   Recently a mate of mine was given a box of old Hornby/Lima locos and rolling stock (Tat )including a Hornby Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 and a Lima GWR Railcar which had seen better days. More of these in future instalments . Some of the tat was kit built including few Cooper Craft GWR wagons and a rare SILVER and BLACK Airfix BR Brake van. It looked

Heworth Sidings - Update - 04/10/2012

Hi,   Since our last working session at our club meeting, we have been able to get together a couple more times after work.   The first job now that the Cork had been installed to form the track bed, was to offer up the track, shape it, cut it and work out where the droppers were going to be placed. In a departure from the rest of the layout, we have decided to use Concrete Sleeper rail on the End Loops. In hindsight, our initial decision to use wooden sleeper track just doesn't sit with a m

1984 - INTSEC 3/19

The arch infills and girder bridge are now completed.   There are no station names in 1984, only Newspeak abbreviations. The station is known only as INTSEC 3/19 (Intersection of Main Line 3 and tube station 19) - you can make your own mind up as to which North London Station it represents!     Winston stands alone on the platform and watches a B set pull in amid the smoke and steam - I must get around to giving him a pair of eyes!     I figured that seeing how Orwell wrote this i

    • Yes indeed Phil - but to be honest all the "gubbins" around the front could also be done better in 3D print - at least that way, I would have put it the right way round!     I found the details from Aston and Tyteford very useful when making it. Hence my thoughts about detailing it in this manner, to add to the collective RMWeb knowledge.   Re: IPA - I was surprised, but that doesn't explain why a fresh bottle still did not remove the paint.   Interestingly,
    • A great start to a worthwhile project Neal and your photos, particularly of the Didcot original make excellent references for, like kingmemder, my own two Dart projects.   I never realised that IPA effectively had a use by date, interesting.   Keep up the good work,   Bill
    • Old tech vs. New tech. Things have moved on!   Phil
    • Good luck with that.   If I was to do the kit again, I would see if someone could 3D print the steps for me. I am sure they dont need to be as fiddly as they are!   Regards, Neal.
    • Great effort Neal. I have 2 Dart Castings kits sitting in the stash. When I finish the Centenary set (ready for the paint shop), and the O11 Siphon I may make a start. Just a few signals to make in the meantime.
