Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Weavers Yard - a Conundrum Resolved

As mentioned in the previous entry, I was having a problem regarding the layout of the area at 'X'. A very useful visit to the Farnham Museum gave access to the 11934 25" - 1 mile O.S. map -     This showed that '7a' West Street - seen to the left of the yard entrance in this view -     actually had a trapezoid plan.   Another 'site visit' (just down the road!) showed that the roof has various elements - a flat roof serving a roof-light over the main shop, with a 'catslide roof' (on

Par Station in N Gauge - Bridging the gap

Good evening all,   While the station canopy dries from being painted I have decided to move onto my second structural project, the footbridge.   This is definitely my biggest challenge to date and my first scratch built structure that is to be entirely in plastic. Last time I was in Par, I decided to take numerous shots of the footbridge in order to make as near to accurate model as possible. Ok, so some L-shaped plastic strips in 2 different sizes, 0.5mm and 0.25mm thick plasticard and a

Delph - Signals trial fitting

The signals made for me by Steve Hewitt (of Liverpool Lime Street fame) were collected last week and have been trial fitted to the layout and the operating mechanisms and contol units fitted and wired. Steve has made a wonderful job, as seen in his semaphore signals thread in the forum section of this site. The following photos show the signals in situ and the operating bits fitted. The signals have since been removed and refitted into their carrying frames for safety during further layout cons

Talking Stock #16 The S15 Goods Arthurs…

Like the Urie’s other successful 4-6-0 designs the H15 and N15 King Artur Class, for the latter see my Talking Stock #9 post here , his S15 class was built in batches both by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) and also the Southern Railway. The first Twenty were built at Nine Elms in 1920. Their appearance is very similar the N15 class and they shared many components including the 180 lb per sq in boiler and tender designs. Being designed for heavy goods work they had 5 ft 7 in

Killybegs Train Shed

With holidays in France over for another year, the drawings finished and materials ordered and delivered, I really had no excuse not to get on with the train shed roof. Construction doesn't exactly replicate the original but it will be very close in appearance (as the trusses will be visible through the rood glazing). The main members are in brass hollow tube and have been drilled to take the lengths of 0.5mm nickel silver rod which represent the bracing. The roof will be removable which is why

"Identity Change...60503 & 2006"

It's been a difficult last month, with job woes and traveling a plenty, but when one door closes, another one opens. However, whilst my physical modelling has taken a bit of a hit, with no work done on the fleet of locomotives and rolling stock since early September, I have begun planning my new layout, Ganwick Curve, which I intend to build over a two year period.   However, I intend this week to finish a few specific projects and also push a few along towards their completion. It was plannin

Weavers Yard - construction begins

Having attended a very interesting and inspirational '2mm Association' AGM, it's time to put that inspiration to work... Currently I'm working from a set of photographic images, using 'known dimensions' to create scales etc for construction of the 'concept model'. What I AM missing is a good aerial image - preferably from the 1947-49 RAF photo recce series (I'm off to the local museum today in hopes of rectifying this).     So here's the 'ground plan' marked out on 6mm foam-board. Last of the First - Part 5

In the previous installment the etches for the D600 bogies had just arrived in the post leaving me wondering whether I could actually build a bogie from them...   Thankfully it turns out that I can   Some of you will have seen the partially completed bogie at the AGM on Saturday (and a jolly good day it was too). I had hoped to have two bogies built, painted and on the loco before Saturday, but the etches arrived rather later than I had planned so it was too big an ask. Instead D604 had to

BR Blue Class 37

Bought a 37/0 off ebay, very pleased as it has a V4 Loksound.     My preference is for proper headcodes, partly nostalgia and partly because it gives a train an identity in my mind. It came with 'domino' headcodes so I popped one out ....     I removed the paint, but still felt the transparent headcode glazing was too small, looked at photos and got conflicting impressions and still felt they were too small, so I made a start on proper headcode windows. Bits of sweetie box acetate are

Three in a row...

Well I'm trying to complete a bit each night on the Ratio 2-4-0.   I heard on another thread that these kits did not have a great reputation for running well, so it was with trepidation I set off on building the chassis tonight. Again, it has been a relatively easy buildso far, although most holes needed to be opened out slightly to accomodate the bearings and axles, and I have yet to fit the gearbox and motor.. However, no soldering was required, though I did add a dab where the pick up wir

Never enough time before a deadline......

Well the Woking AGM of the G1MRA is only a few weeks away and I still have not finished the development of the Midland Railway covered goods wagons, I have the 6 prototype bodys built but I am waiting for the test etches to come back for the strapping and the lasercut steel underframes have not seen the light of day yet either. On the positive side the rapid prototyped MR 10A grease axle boxes look great!   Only other projects I need to finish are the new display stand and sign and the patter

Wheal Elizabeth at Manchester - new passenger service

Just a few photos from the Manchester show at the weekend. The new end to end format allowed us to have a lot of fun playing with new trains. The Class 108 DMU needs a bit of work to stop it falling off quite so much (either weight or compensation) as the lightweight nature of some of the bogies meant it was a little unstable.   All in all, it was really good fun. I only had the phone, so apologies for the poor quality of some of the photos.   Wheal Elizabeth will be back out in 2013. It's

Tarmac yer drive mister?

Actually not that kind of resurfacing, more a stalled project bubbling back to the surface for a little more attention. this happens from time to time, and frequently they sink back again, still incomplete, but I'm hoping to actually have this one finished by the end of the year.   Yes, the 37 has made a comeback, now that the distraction of the IZA Ferrywagons is over for the time being. Actually, a fair amount has been achieved since the last update, with most of the wiring in place, the c

Track down..

Hey Guys.   So far I've assembled my brilliant baseboards together and laid a ply board on top. I have the tracks fixed down. Now for the masking the track with the tape. So far so good   I'm planning to build a tunnel maybe on one of the corners. Could I ask of some of your advice how to make it? I've seen some really great ideas recently I'm dead keen on making this the best it could be   Many thanks Dan

Track Planning

As mentioned in the opening blog post, Trevanion Dries is a small facility with the run-around severely limiting train length. Before I plunge headlong into handbuilding any more 2mm pointwork however I want to make sure I've got a workable track plan which bears as much resemblance as possible to dries in the area bearing in mind the huge compromise I'm making with space. The current plan is below:   From top to bottom: Line 1 - enclosed within the dries facility for loading of any wagon

Mickleover

Another blog entry!     It has been a few weeks since I last posted in the "show visits" blog. Last week I visited the Loughborough show, thoroughly enjoyed it, but never got the chance to write an entry. This weekend saw me visit the Mickleover show. This is one of my local shows, held at the Mickleover Community Centre, home of the club that runs this and the Moorways show.   My visit spanned both the Saturday and Sunday. On the first day I managed a brief visit to drop some leaflets off

Little and Large...

I've done a bit more on the loco and tender, and its time to review the progress so far. Firstly, these plastic kits go together quite quickly, with a little pre planning and setting out of parts of course. The comment I made about flash I will now retract a little, given the amount on the tender - especially the coal rails, which had to be cleared of a dense quantity of the stuff. However, the tender is now completed. Both the loco body and the tender are supplied with substantial lead wei

Can't think of a clever title - but things are getting close!

The first ever Weston-on-Trent model railway show is getting ever closer. Here is the latest update!     I may have been a little worried as I approached the staff meeting last week. The Weston on Trent model railway show was the only item on the agenda, and I faced the task of persuading the female dominated staff of exhibition virgins to provide help on the day. Thankfully my worries proved unfounded. They seemed to get quite excited by the event and a few have got together to take on the o

    • Yes indeed Phil - but to be honest all the "gubbins" around the front could also be done better in 3D print - at least that way, I would have put it the right way round!     I found the details from Aston and Tyteford very useful when making it. Hence my thoughts about detailing it in this manner, to add to the collective RMWeb knowledge.   Re: IPA - I was surprised, but that doesn't explain why a fresh bottle still did not remove the paint.   Interestingly,
    • A great start to a worthwhile project Neal and your photos, particularly of the Didcot original make excellent references for, like kingmemder, my own two Dart projects.   I never realised that IPA effectively had a use by date, interesting.   Keep up the good work,   Bill
    • Old tech vs. New tech. Things have moved on!   Phil
    • Good luck with that.   If I was to do the kit again, I would see if someone could 3D print the steps for me. I am sure they dont need to be as fiddly as they are!   Regards, Neal.
    • Great effort Neal. I have 2 Dart Castings kits sitting in the stash. When I finish the Centenary set (ready for the paint shop), and the O11 Siphon I may make a start. Just a few signals to make in the meantime.
