We have progress!

After far too long a delay I've finally got round to getting the baseboards assembled, and a lot of the track laid.   Largely following the original proposed track plan, although nothing's fixed down as yet (The beauty of Kato Unitrack is you can rearrange things very easily if you realise the trackplan isn't quite working.   Photos to follow.

1308 Lady Margaret - scratch build part 6

Hi everyone,   I've done some more detailing on this model, coal in the bunker,front and rear steps added, vacuum pipes, 3 link couplings, oh and leaf springs made and fitted. The coal in the bunker is plastic stuff made by Peco. The front steps are metal ones cut from the RTR bogies I used for the Double Fairlie, the rear ones are for a Jinty they come from an etched set I got from Mainly trains. Brookford Grass

Off my Workbench

Some folks may have seen several episodes describing this under construction on the workbench thread in the 2mm forums. Last night it was planted on the layout and given a quick test.   All seems to be working OK.     Which frees up my signal building board for the next one... plenty more to do!   We also have some new buildings... must try to get my camera and the buildings to be in the same place at the same time.

The GAP ex-LSWR G16 gains buffers

Since most of the remaining painting required will be by brush, I decided it was time to add the buffers, after first painting the buffer beams and shanks red. There was a minor disaster when I dropped one of the sprung buffers and it fell apart on the floor. I fished around with a torch for extra illumination for a while and eventually reunited the buffer head, shank, spring and tiny retaining screw! I do have to check to see if that rear buffer beam should be red for its entire depth or only f

Getting there with painting laser cut building

As suggested by Tim Horn I tried painting the building with Halfords primer once I had stuck it together. This shows my interlocking brickwork nearly worked but the end of the stretcher finishes about .2mm too shallow behind the adjacent wall. To make it work I'd need thin the wall sections down to something like 2.8mm before gluing up the joint. Just a brief update on No.5972 and its condition - things are looking up for this venerable and prized locomotive in the fleet. Upon a thorough examination of this locomotive, it was discovered that the flaw in running quality and operations was down to poor decisions in maintenance, rather than any fault of the powertrain itself. Afternoon all, I have on my layout a Peco turntable which at present is operated by handwheel directly through the side of the baseboard. I`ve tried different types of power sources but none gave a smooth rotation, it tending to be rather jerky. Disconnection from the worm and wheel seems to be an improvement. The ex-LSWR G16 continues to take shape - part 2

I spent a short time this afternoon gluing the steps, toolbox and cab roof vent on the G16, followed by filing the rear body mounting to make it sit more levelly. Par Station in N Gauge - Platforms getting there!

Good evening all,   My second entry this week! I must admit, I have been fairly busy modelling over the past few days and the layout is starting to show some progress now.   I have decided to get the platforms down on board two. The edging is Peco and as you will see from the photos, I have used card to strengthen the centre and also used as the platform top as I feel it provides a good texture to paint onto. I still have to scribe the paving onto the island platform which I will do later on

Interlocking bricks and push together buildings

Inspired by people using the brickwork to interlock the corners of a laser cut building I had a go at drawing out my 'test shed' with the sides designed to interlock. As the material to hand was 3mm MDF (I have some 1.5mm and 1mm on order) I cut out the stretchers on the joint. On Saturday 26 January I will be exhibiting at my 'home' club annual exhibition. Not only will I be showing my 009 Yate Rocks Tramway but it will also be the first public viewing of my new 009 Stockton Lock. Stockton Lock is an 'Ikea Billy bookcase layout' being designed to fit onto a bookcase, hence it's relatively small size.     • Thank you Annie - I really enjoy re-creating these early engines.  It would have been impossible if the young Edward Lane had not taken a liking to them in the yard at Swindon.  By then, most of them had been superseded by later designs, such as Firefly, but he must have had a sense of 'history'.
    • If the IPA is not removing paint, a good trick is to warm it up which makes it more effective.   Though like you say after a number of uses it does loose its potency, I recently had to change mine after it got to the point where it was barely touching the paint 
    • Thank you Chris - I think it's lovely too!  The Lane drawing was probably made in around 1848, ten years after this engine was delivered and after its time on the South Devon. As my final sentence suggested, I am now looking hard at 'Ajax' which had similar-looking solid wheels.
    • My impression from the sketch was of a round section and I think the way they are arranged to slide through those supports works best of they were.  Round rods were often used on early engines when flat strip came later - possible driven by the availability of steel.
