Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Revised trackplan

Been a bit quiet of late. The loft is ready. I have been assembling small shelving units to go under the baseboards and have moved all the railway "stuff" up from the garage into the loft. Still need to get a workbench and something to sit on up there. Baseboards are on order from Elite Baseboards whom I met at the Bristol show a few weeks ago. Installation is scheduled for late June/early July.   I made reasonable progress on the model of Newport Engine shed but got to the point where the ac

I've got a traverser!

Yes it does come as a it of a surprise to me but I have managed to create a traverser from a few bits of would and absolutely no experience of such things! As much research as possible from the wonderful internet has helped.   As you might be able to tell , I am rather pleased with myself!. It slides freely but positively, seems to be strong and is not too heavy. I used a ply sandwich for the ends the same as the other boards but made up a timber 'L' beam for the longitudinal edge which seems

Lamp Irons for ex GWR models.

My last Post looked at Dapol County engines. These models appear to me to be essentially the same as the latest Hornby Rail Road models. At one end so to speak the models come with a working fall plate, at the other there is a lack of detail – such as no lamp irons.   Dapol County and Airfix Castle fitted with lamp irons   To my knowledge the earliest ready to run models that came with lamp irons fitted to the front foot plate were the Airfix 14xx models.   Recent Hornby 14xx showing s

4101 Dubs Crane part 6

Hi everyone, I've been at it again although nothing much seems to change, I painted the inside of the cab where it would be difficult to access when the back and roof were on. I've added the buffer beams and square buffers, cab roof, water tank filler cap. the shaft and flywheel are to drive the crane turntable, this is driven by a cylinder and con rod situated in the right corner of the cab (see previous entry). In one photo I found online it looked like coal hadspilled out onto the cab floor

Station Buildings in N

Welcome back to my slow moving 'N' Project!   As the blogs suggests, this is to be a layout set on the Kent Racetrack between Redhill and Folkestone namely at Headcorn and showing an upgraded dual track branch to Tenderden. The concept is that after World War 1 Tenterden was selected as a prototype new town or Garden Suburb (take your pick). To support this, the K&ESR was taken over by the newly formed Southern Railway and the town was developed. As the original station is down a very narr

Return to East Grinstead and Spectacular Panniers

I have just added some photos from my visit to the Bluebell last week to my 2013 page, along with photos from the Bodmin and Wenford Railway's Pannier Gala and the South Devon Railway's Easter Gala that I hadn't previously advertised.   3205 was visiting the Bluebell:       Sample from Bodmin:     My photos from the SDR are stored on another computer, but expect to find photos of short goods trains and the 57xx running in London Transport red livery!

More on the brakevan....

I've been a little quiet of late, working away on my Hornby hack-bashed GCR brakevan.   I'm pleased to say that it is probably within an ace of being finished....         Having cut up the original body, and fitted overlays to the sides and ends, I then added overlays over those to create the panelled effect. I've lost count of how many coats of bauxite paint it's taken- it must be at least five.   Works still to do pretty much run to completing the paint job, amending two of t

Northall Dock - Roope & Voss Ltd

Design As you could see on the drawing I designed three warehouses.     The story The warehouse of Roope & Voss Ltd will be the main scene. The story behind the Roope & Voss Ltd – Wine and spirit merchants can be read in the article of the Northall Gazette.       The Warehouse - from the Dutch architect Peter Potter (1854 -1918) The building is just quick build to see of: · the scene is convincing · the building has the right appearance · the colours are right   Detail

A West Country Hero - Part 2

Not quite 'finished', but at least back in one piece (at the last minute) in a presentable state for Railex.   On the whole it's far from perfect (and very shiny just now) but I am very pleased with the result.   I'll say more later. For now, here are a couple of slightly iffy photos (dull and rainy day light available today)       Off to load up St Ruth for Railex now.

Heworth Sidings - Update - 24/05/2013

Hi,   Well since the last Blog entry it seems like most of the build team have either been on Holiday or are getting ready to go, so progress on the scenic work has been a little limited, but enough for an update.   Having worked on the dis-used bridge last time and built up the ground either side of it, we decided to work on the terrain on the remaining curved board. As the land slopes gently down, we basically picked up the profile from the centre board and then worked towards the other en

Most of a traverser

Spent all afternoon making this and did in fact get a bit further before I had to give up due to lack of wood. Something went a bit wrong with the height of the traverser table (hardly surprising really as I was making it up as I went along!), so the 12mm ply would be too high. Reckon some 9mm MDF will do the trick though so will be off to get that in the morning.   It all went together pretty well and seems flat, strong and not too heavy. Big question though is is it going to slide properly?

Aire Valley Railway

Hi. About more buildings. The last one of any note to be constructed was Danes Crossing Works at Saltaire. As mentioned in the Railway Modeller article of August 1976 the interior of the building was completed after the whole of Saltaire was remodelled. Are interiors of buildings worth doing? I suppose it's up to the builder. I had always wanted to have a go and was pleased I did.Little did I realise then that the works was to be the penultimate article about the Aire Valley. There were couple

A little Southern for the weekend?

I haven't built a Parkside kit for a while so knocking out a couple of Southern 12T covered vans to diagram 1428 was a nice change. In fact, to build something 'out of the box' without having to worry about springing or compensation or replacing the running gear with etched bits and pieces was a bit of a tonic. A gin & tonic. Much as I love to super-detail stuff, sometimes the big kid in me just wants to stick a plastic kit together and slap some paint on. What a bonus to be paid to do just

changing a motor on early 101 dmu

Hi everybody, I just would like to know if there are any motors that will drop in, in place of an old type Hornby motor similar to an xo3 but double ended on a dmu unit, I think the motor assembly in this is x3121.

Western Steam Days Remembered

Yes the much delayed Western Steam Days Remembered is out and should be in a shop near you right now, alternatively order direct via the website for free postage within the UK. (Sorry overseas but high quality landscape books cost a fortune to send through the post).   I have selected from a massive range of 35mm colour slides from the 1950s and 1960s to ensure the best quality large reproduction of interesting colour photographs within this landscape volume. Bringing the best out of not only

Controlling Interests #5 recent modifications completed…and working

In my previous Controlling blog Interest posts I have discussed changes being made to a number of layout control items on Fisherton Sarum. For the last number of weeks the layout has been set up in its entirety at my local Model Railway Society , the High Wycombe and District MRS (whom have a nice new website also worth taking a look at..) This prolonged period of having the layout set up has enable a number of items of work to be carried including:   Signals There are two working LSWR latti

Sliders

Made a start today on the final board which I have been putting off as it involves a traverser which is something new for me. Have finally settled on using key board shelf runners from Homebase. These are really solid and smooth running due to using ball bearings. First job though was to start hacking them about so they will slide both ways. To do this I cut back the end stop just enough to allow the slider past but not the ball bearing cage. I was not convinced it would work but it does!

a few more pics...

Good evening,   A few more pics to share courtesy of Chris, (eastwestdivide) who kindly sent a selection through.   These show a bit more of the layout as I was conscious that my pics from the show tried to capture the overall presentation.   What is apparent and was commented on during the day is the lack of backscene. You may recall, that when I first started sketching the layout idea, I posed the question of a 'floating backscene' which was suspended across the back but was open at the

Buildings For Litlington (Oh, and another trackplan)

OK, so first things first (at risk of boring my regular readers and contributors to tears!) - another plan.   Combining the best bits from previous ones - reintroducing the river which guides the eye, a bridge over said river - and keeping the shed and station building as a view block. I've also 'flipped' the layout - whilst I liked the idea of passenger trains traversing the length of the layout before pulling into the station, it would have produced an issue with operation, in that the loco

Astonish!

Following some advice earlier, I tried Aldi today but no luck. Have had a bit of a search on the net and it seems that Poundworld might stock it. There is one at the Merry Hell Shopping Centre but I don't go there lightly! If anyone has a Poundworld near them perhaps they could take a look and let me know. If all else fails I can get some more from Ebay but my postman might not be too happy!   In case you are wondering what this is all about Astonish wood floor polish beats PVA hands down for

Not one for the purists......

Well well well, after finding a bit of time to do some modelling for once i have just about got something nearly finished! A long while back, i had a spare lima 50 and deltic and set about hacking them up to create a 'super deltic' as outlined in the the 'deltic locomotives of british rail' book. It started pretty well but as time is always at a premium, playing trains has taken over from building trains. Anyway, for this entry i thought id go back to the start with some pics of how the build w

Wills Saint

A while back I picked up a bargain part built Wills Saint from the second hand stand at a preserved railway, with the intention of rebuilding it as St Dunstan in post war livery (St Dunstan being the name of the junior school I went to as a child).   Upon stripping back the components, it was clear that some of the components were in a worse state than others (in particular the boiler which had a large cutout for an X04 motor and a lot of rivet detail missing on the top of the boiler.   Afte

Another Roof!

State of play thus far with 'The Works' - new wire roof fitted before covering. The roof is designed so that it can be removed for track cleaning and loco placing. I've tried hard with this one to get everything straight and square.     I'm trying to achieve something like the roof at Loughborough Works. This photo is from The Railway Magazine (Nov 2012 souvenir issue) - it show the works in the late 80's building the Class 60. It's a former wagon works, but loco erecting shops and wagon
