Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

A few vans.. and a Type 2 now weathered!

I have, over the years weathered a number of vans.   This weeks work is to complete a Sulzer Type 2 (Class 24 - I have fitted a Legomanbiffo sound chip to), then the ex GC locos seen in earlier bits of the blog, and finally some added detail to some vans. I will post the original view here today then fill in photos of the vehicles when weathered.   First up the Green 24     and now with weathering...     then the vans..

BEATTIE 0298 CLASS (5)

Have been adding a little detail to the body, It has been a little slow as I have had some time away from the workbench. Mainly waiting for things and people that never turn up.   The first pictures show the bunker rear and the water filler which was scratch built as there was not one with the kit. I still need to add the top lamp iron, and the fire iron brackets, once I have worked out how to make them.     We then move onto the injector feed, which was also

Baseboard Construction

I commented in one of my previous posts that even though this is a layout set in the last century, it is being built in this century and I want to use 21st century technologies to build it. This is why I want to move away from the traditional all-wood construction when making the baseboards.   Instead, aluminium extrusions will make up the frame which will then support the plywood top. Hopefully this combination of aluminium and plywood will result in a very strong but light baseboard.   Alu

GWR 4 wheel brake 3rd - Almost ready for varnish

So,   the lining is almost done, still got some tidying up to do, mainly just some re-lining where touching up has run into the ocre. I've also got the end strapping to paint.     Despite the condition of the coach, no roof let alone windows and a strong smell of paint - some passengers have already taken up residence too!

A Friendly Model?!

With the 5 new PMVs sent on to the Paint Shop, Honley Tank’s Assembly Shop started on the refurbishment of an ancient locomotive crane.   What that really means is that a few months ago my good friend and next-door neighbour gifted me a nearly completed Airfix, 15T Locomotive Crane; one of the old 3/- plastic kits. How many of you remember it? Here’s the box:     The kit was complete except for the rigging, but of course with the original moulded plastic, ‘oo’ gauge wheels and painted wit

Scalescenes Card Kit

Because I had some downtime this weekend, I started tinkering with a card kit from scale scenes that I saw in another members layout. They're a bit fiddly to put them together (something not so easy to do if you have pickle fingers), but the results are pretty awesome. They look superb up close and from a distance. If I can master making these, I'm going to use the kits to make the walls of the viaduct after all the wiring is done and the layout is more or less in that ready state for scenery.

Building the base

Again the layout is 120" x 28" being built in 2 sections.   I'm using 1/4" ply for the top, and since I don't own a lot of tools, I'm going with dimensional lumber for the structure... I chose 1x4 select pine, as it seemed to be fairly hard, and didn't seem to bow much if any on my last layout.   Pretty straight forward stuff, I used cabinet screws on the structure. I bought 2 2x4' 1/4 ply sheets into the necessary lengths and braced the middle with an additional 1x4 where they met together.

Planning my layout.

Hi Folks,   I'm not shy to say I've been lurking on this site for a while, looking at the photos, and getting a lot of inspiration from everyone here...   I recently tore down an n-scale 6'x10' bedroom layout as it was taking up too much of my time, money, and (living in a 800sq ft condominium) space. I'm now in the process of building a much smaller (modular) wide-shelf layout.   The new layout planned is 120" x 28" or 10' x 2'4", this will be divided into two 5 foot sections. Eventual

Penultimate Battle of Britain

It's taken a long time to get here, but I've just got the one Battle of Britain to go now (and yes I have the donor ) I decided with the penultimate one to do something unique, to photograph every stage of the process (alright I forgot the donor before photo lol)   The donor was a R2458 '222 Squadron', the Battle of Britain she'd become would be 34080 74 Squadron, with a twist you see like the majority of the 34071 - 34110 series of Bulleid light Pacifics she had her 5,500gl tender swapped fo

Bakewell 2013

Yesterday I spent an enjoyable few hours at the Peak Model Railway Show at Bakewell. I visited the show for the first time last year, and was looking forward to this year's event. The venue is very nice - a spacious and well lit hall with plenty of room to walk round and view the exhibits. There is a well priced cafe too with some very nice bacon rolls!   This year's event featured a number of impressive layouts. The Lancashire and Yorkshire layout "Calderwood" has a number of impressive ca

Smoke box darts. - or are they handles?

This is the final installment in a series of Posts about adding detail to a Hornby / Dapol County Class. After posting pictures of the Dapol locomotive body with its new lamp irons and replacement buffers I was directed by friend José in Argentina to ‘do something about’ the moulded smoke box handles.   Yes I know that there are turned brass items for purchase but I was born in Yorkshire and I still relish the challenge of saving some money!   Ex GWR darts courtesy of FJ Roche   What s

Starting the Jigsaw

Over the last week I've been mostly working on some rolling stock, but today have been able to put together the first of the baseboards.   As has been explained previously, I intend to use the 'Jigsaw' method of construction. This has been giving me headaches over the past few days, but today I bit the bullet and got on with it.   The first board is below;   Click image to enlarge   The result? - Not half bad, especially the slabs underneath (photo taken in the garden for natural ligh

The Works - Roof Covering

Some pics of the roof covering going on. Mounting card pasted with the Scalescenes Aged Clapboard render has been used as an outer cover leaving the window openings clear. The outside of the card will be covered with simple strips of masking tape which will then be painted in black acrylic - this will nicely simulate an asphalt covering (this worked well on my model of a track side store on my Cheslyn layout).     What's great about taking photos during a build is that it shows up detai

The B5 (part 4)

As is my fashion things suddenly have gone rather quiet. You see, the B5 isn't the only project on my bench at the moment- the other is a 36'' live steam Edwardian launch (6'' Mamod boiler with a twin cylinder oscillating engine set up in a balsa wood hull). The weather being so nice last weekend and this, and coupled with my going out to Stratford yesterday with my madcap Vicwardian friends, I decided that it would make a nice change to do some work outdoors for once. Hence my weekend modelling

Still on a S&T things....

Some time ago I built myself a Midland Fog mans hut from a works drawing dated 1918, but I had a few issues with making it hinge, the Midlands huts didn't have doors but were designed to fold down when not in use.   Well today I revisited my original work and applied the little gray cells, by changing the materials I have been able to make a robust pivot based on a 1/32" rivet.     So now not only can they be up in use but folded down.     Coal bunker as a little project next.

Heworth Sidings - Update - 09/06/2013

Hi,   We have continued to make good progress with the scenic work and since the last blog entry have managed to fit in two working sessions.   06/06/2013   After our work last time on the final curved board, we now had the remaining two straight boards to build terrain on. As these two boards lead into our curved loops, then it's necessary for us to try and blend out the terrain on the scenic boards and match it to the end loops as seamlessly as possible. Again we were using our now tried

Busy Day

Well no actual modeling today but progress in other areas. Was up at Burton on Trent for the 7mm narrow gauge association exhibition. Picked up a whole load of figures from PLM Castaways which now need painting and met up with quite a few of the suppliers I have got to know.   From there it was a rather ambitious two hours over to Wales and up to Glyn Ceriog where the GVT were having a bash with a couple of hundred yards of two foot track and a replica DeWinton giving rides. OK, not one for th

A short holiday

Just got back from a fortnight's holiday in the Department du Lot (France) where, among other great sites, we visited a Heritage Railway (if that's what they are called) that runs on a disused line from Martel to St. Denis. Among their items there is a locomotive built way back in 1887 and which was in service until the 1970's. There are a few photos below. The coaches (?) were open, unsprung I believe, the flooring seemed to be old sleepers and the seating was wooden, recovered from old French

New platform update

Over the past few weeks since the last post I have been stealing odd moment to go to the shed and work on the section of the layout in front of the sector plate   A new platform was constructed using a length of 3" x 2" timber with a 6mm ply top on it. The front of the timber was faced with plasikard stone affect.       Next up a ramp to the left and a section of platform across the end of the line.     Below is a view from under the footbridge that shows the curve     Then a s

Finishing some wagons

Finally picked up a set of LMS and LNER wagon transfers (again HMRS) and a tin of LMS bauxite paint, so finally the remaining wagons could be finished off. (finished ish anyway, they will all still need buffers and 3 link couplings   First up an LMS ventilated D1832 ventilated van, and a D1986 LMS 1 plank, both have been painted in the post war brauxite livery and will be lettered up this evening. The 1 plank still needs more work finishing off the paint work inside.   Next a parkside D

Aire Valley Railway

Hi. I gather the image I attached got through Stating the obvious it was a B/W print of part of Nethertarn on the aborted line.I going to try a few more. One of interest is the one of the Clinker Block Works, a bit dark, with the American rail cars on the line above I think it may explain why the line was aborted. The image of the stamp may be of interest. Regards Derek.
