Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

21Ton Hoppers - clean and part weathered

Looking at some other blogs I noted that people are unaware of some add on items from Judith Edge Kits - in particular some bits to improve the humble Airfix/Mainline/Dapol 21T hopper.   I have two ready for weathering.. well one is part weathered so here we go:     you get an etch with the handrail stanchions and the door operation levers.   Carve off the plastic handrails and then add the etched bits with some brass wire! I'll finish the weathering and put that up in the blog   enj

The saga of the B5 continues...

Just a few photos to show work to date on the B5....     The complete model at the moment. Lots to do- I'm sure you can see all the bits I've yet to get around to without my needing to point them out....     The tender body- started as a Triang Fowler tender top to which I laminated new sides, added a flare in plastic section and then added plated coal rails. This is, if anything, rougher than the loco at the moment! But once rubbed down, filed and finished it should look the part.

Empire Mill (was Basin) - revised plan

I've been playing in TurboCad today, revising my plans to fit the model of Ebridge Mill I've been making. The result has been a slight simplification of the siding to the mill, I decided it looked just too squashed with multiple sidings. Also I've managed to get more space between the two yard sidings so that you can actually get a lorry between the sidings to load/unload. The river has a slight difference in that there is now a cut from the river, under the lane with the level crossing (slightl

Saturday Spotting in Saxony

Afternoon all!   While SWMBO and SiL were on a shopping round through Leipzig, me and my camera rode out for a little photo session at Engelsdorf Station in the east of Leipzig. As those of you familiar with the German railway scene will probably know, Engelsdorf is the location of a marshalling yard also, though it doesn't seem terribly busy on Saturday afternoons. However, I did collect some snapshots from both the passenger station and the yard...       Double unit of Mitteldeutsche R

Sheffield Supertram first test print.........

Few photos of the test print of Sheffield Supertram project, done in WSF as I knew there was a few things to sort in the CAD but wanted something physical to show at the Sheffield Bus, Tram and Train Show next weekend.   Not the finished article by a long stretch, one error from the drawings had been picked up before and another one since so hopefully the final version should be spot on...   Anyway some pics

Controlling Interests #6 Uncoupling the box van for the stores

One of the regular operational movements when operating Fisherton Sarum is to bring the 12t box van of spare parts and shed consumables, that has arrived from Eastliegh works, to the shed stores located in the water tower building at its own unloading platform. Just as at Salisbury this involves a shunt across the turntable. At an exhibition this has required a 12? to the foot scale ‘hand of god’ to uncouple the wagon from the shed pilot loco, or sometimes the ash wagon, until now… With t

William Clarke style Goods Shed part 2

It's been a while so I thought I'd show the progress on my Goods shed project. The application of the quoins did seem to go on a bit, not helped by the fact they had to be placed both the inside and outside of the shed. Working out the angle the plasticard needed to be cut at for the arched door and the round windows defeated me, I should have listenened harder in geometry! In the end I resorted to a best guess, along with a bit of judicious filling here and there until they fitted.

How did I get to this – tribute to ……

Thinking..   After I put the poem to the entry last I week I started to think about the ….. (dots) So here is the answer in a nutshell. The inspiration came when I traveled by train with my wife over the new line through the Flevopolder to Groningen.                 Holliday …   As a boy in the late 1950’s I got on vacation with my parents to a place in the north of the Netherlands in the province of Groningen. After going from Utrecht to Groningen with the electric express train

First Backscene

Finally drummed up enough courage and with an hour to spare this afternoon I got the backscene on the fiddle yard/engine shed board. A good spray to the ply with soapy water and it floated on with little difficulty.     Once it's really dry I will stick the edges round and then trim off the slight excess at the top edge. A coat or two of matt varnish will finish the job

Progress on laser-cut mill

Over the last week or so I've made some good progress on my model of Ebridge Mill. The lower building is almost complete now, the roof got covered with Wills sheet and I'm reasonably happy with the colour. It probably needs some Woodland Scenics putting into some of the troughs as lichen. The rain water goods have had quite a large effect on the look too with the guttering made from shaped 40thou plasticard and the down pipes from 1mm plastic rod.     When you zoom in you can really see the

More wagon kits

Last night I got on with the initial stages of the next batch of wagons, All of which are now waiting for   First up a a Coopercraft Loco Coal open, and a 4 plank open. Coopercraft open wagons are a bit of a pain, given that Coopercraft have moulded the floor much too high. As a result I have corrected it by removing all of the ribs on the underside of the floor, then glued it in the correct position to the sides / ends. The solbars were then modified to remove the 2mm additional length on

DCC Meltdown

Have rewired the first and second boards now and I am sure you will agree that they are a lot prettier. Have been thinking about the control panels and think that rather than having switches for each point, I shall have route switches that will select all points on that part of the loop which should drastically reduce the chances of running into a close point.   Obvious question here is why don't I just use DCC? Answer is two part: 1) I just prefer the idea of a route panel and 2) My DCC has s

4101 Dubs Crane part 8

In my last post I showed how I constructed the connecting rods, they looked a shade too heavy so I slimmed them down a bit. Next came the tricky bit, how to secure them on the crank pins. I sought advice on the questions page and have received some very sound advice, thanks to all who contributed. Here's a picture of the rods on one side set up with oiled cigarette papers in place ready for the 'quick dab' with the new Antex 25 watt iron.     Once the soldering was sucessfully completed I

BEATTIE 0298 CLASS (6)

After the diversion of yesterday I finished off the body. I am pleased with the way it has turned out. To me it looks like the little beastie it is supposed to be. It has been a fight, which is still not over, as I have the backhead to complete. It I think comes from a completly different loco. It is the right size and now all the bits that are not needed have been removed. I just have to make or get representations of what should be there.   But back to the body, the last lamp irons w

Relayed and rewired

Managed to get track on first board relayed to correct my mess up that I decided I couldn't live with. There is now a much bigger run in area before the points which will not only help to give a slightly more open feel but will make disguising the fiddle yard much easier - there is a distinct lack of road bridges and tunnels on the Western Front!   Also took the opportunity to tidy up the wiring and introduce a bit of colour coding which should make things easier later especially when the cont

Tommies

Have done a bit more work on the figures today - drilled their feet or bottoms (ouch!), and super glued a piece of wire to aid handling and eventual fixing to the layout. A good wash and then an undercoat of Halfords best grey en-mass on a polystyrene plant tray - very handy.   Managed a trip to Maplins for switches for control panels and ended up with some coloured wire to tidy up undersides of the boards a bit. I think this is necessary as things could well get a bit out of hand when I start

BEATTIE 0298 CLASS (5.5)

After a chat with Ivan (Horsetan) I have redone the smoke box door. This is because it looked to big. The trouble is the kit is an inlargement of the Jidenco 4mm one. The boiler and smokebox I found out today are slightly undersize.   I was lucky as I found a whitemetal smokebox front in my pot of waste, that I melt down for ballast in locos etc. It turned down and shaped very nicely in the drill. It certainly does not look as cramped as it did. All the parts from the orginal were refi

Aire Valley Railway

Hi. Having messed about attaching files which I hope I am getting the hang of I thought I thought I had better get on with further etching. Nothing to do with railways I'm afraid. I mentioned the building of the SS Raven which was the the start of my second ship building period. The first was was during the war While the rest of my classmates were into building Spitfires and Hurricanes and the like I was into building British warships. The drawings for these were produced by a firm called Model

VERY off-topic! Why I've not been modelling for a while....

Having just returned from three weeks in 'Oz', time to share some memories! We spent some time in Melbourne - justly renowned for its extensive (and cheap!) tram system!     The 'City Circle' route is actually FREE - jump-on/jump off as many times as you like - a great way to explore the older area of the city cenre. These trams date from the 1930's (I think) and a variant provides the 'tram diner' service which runs during the evening. A tip - if you are travelling to Melbourne & fa

Brighton 75A: Today's post 130611: Disaster strikes!

A somewhat frustrating point has been reached Here's the problem. In order to make the baseboards a) a manageable size b') have as few irregular or curved sides as possible c) fit each other precisely, I drew what I thought would be suitable shapes on the original 1:2500 OS plan. However, when I get to the actual model, I realise that, to avoid the point switches and crossings on what is a very tight track layout, the planned baseboard edges run through one or more switches or crossings, or do

Astonishing!

At last I have found a local supplier for Astonish floor polish which, if you have not been following this quest, is brilliant for sticking down ballast. A new branch of JTF Mega Discount Warehouse has just opened outside town and they have it at 89p + vat which is far cheaper than anywhere else I have seen it on the web.   Other than this startling discovery I have ripped up the track on the left had board as I managed to get the points in the wrong place and decided that I couldn't live with
