Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Summer module - Sign O' The Times

Following a suggestion by Wenlock of this parish, I've added a road sign to the junction at the top of the bridge - it's a Dart Castings "Somerset" sign but I guess Dorset is close enough? I also extended the road into the backscene, and took the opportunity to add a bit more detail and variations in tone.   And look who's arrived in his midnight blue Bentley? If Ivo's expecting some S&D trains, he's in for a bit of a wait. But perhaps he'll be able to make do with the Western Region traff

Introducing......Hunslet week!

Still flushed with success at actually finishing something last week I have decided that the intense approach is a good one to try in sorting out my large collection of kits into working locos. So, I have come up with Hunslet week - next week (which should be fairly clear work wise), I am going to focus just on my Chivers Hunslet 4-6-0 kit and see just how far I can get in a week. It would be great if I could finish it but just getting it running to test track would be good.   I thought this k

Express Parcels – or perhaps just Second Class

I was tempted recently by one of the larger Internet Stores to purchase an ‘end of line’ bargain.   It has been in my mind for some time that I should add the Hornby L1 to the railway. Ideally I would have liked 67777, a Darlington engine (51A) which featured prominently during my train spotting days around Stockton and Middlesbrough.   However the Hornby model on offer was 67722, which in 1959 was shedded at Bishops Stortford (30C). Interestingly my Ian Allan books show that by 1961 eng

The People of Skaleby West Part 1

Part 1 – George Pepper George, a retired widower, is the lone resident of “Yew Tree Cottage” – the thatched dwelling which peeps its way through the trees at the top of the embankment next to the tunnel. A keen gardener, George bought Yew Tree cottage following the death of his wife, Mary, last year. At the time the cottage was in quite a state of disrepair. Throughout last summer George was often seen out in the warm sunshine, clad in his overalls, bringing the building back to its forme

Set 2 - A Conundrum

This is a quick posting , just to record that there's been a bit of progress with Set 2 since I last reported on it , but mainly in the hope of flushing out some info to resolve a problem that is delaying progress:   Here is the underframe of the Brake 3rd (the composite is identical) - I have played about with contrast on the image so you can see the framing . Posed on it is a Comet LMS battery box casting     Two problems are immediately apparent . Firstly, the battery box casting is j

Waverley Shed - the beginning

The story so far...   Shortly after my father passed away a few years ago, leaving me his lovingly built n-gauge line based on a fictitious Isle of Arran railway, I decided that model railways didn't have to mean mainline tail chasing, despite the fact that the last layout he and I had worked on together ( some 30+ years ago) had allowed us to run a full length 'Queen of the Scots', 20 truck coal trains and so on, and look right.   Full marks to him, having never actually had a model railway

An introduction to Linksüberdorf

As I now have two layouts in development (both HOe) and one in "Stock Collection" stage (N gauge) I thought I should separate my Linksuberdorf entries from the big HOe layout (Gerlos).   LUD started back in March when I came across my pile of Peco points (10 of them) that I bought about 6 years ago when I started to think about building a proper layout for my then very small collection oh HOe rolling stock. I also had a piece of 12mm 3 foot square MDF, so I laid out the points on the board and

Dapol Stanier Coach Detailing-Part 1

One of those projects I've had sat on the workbench for a while were a couple of those Dapol Stanier coach kits which I wanted to detail. The composite offers the missing link in Hornby's range of Stanier coaches. I'm no expert on LMS coaches but hopefully these modification will bring these 1970's models up to date.   I think I'm right in saying that Airfix/Dapol got the battery box on the wrong side of the Brake 3rd so I modified this as per one of Coachman's threads on modifying/using the

Improving the Bachmann Craven 105 DMU - Part 1: P4'd and details.

Slight improvements to the Bachmann Craven Part 1: The modelling bit.   I’m applying some delaying tactics to my 47 project, which is currently in primer but with yellow ends. I need some more practice with the BR blue and my Iwata; I’ve got a good finish on one practice GUV body and I want to do another once I’ve done some masking on that too. I’ve been busy with work and been a bit under the weather (influenza and norovirus are two ways to lose weight but I’d not recommend either of them – i

Time Ticks By

After more procrastination than really should have been necessary a somewhat productive afternoon finally occurred with the final pieces of the switch operating mechanism fabricated and fitted allowing the lever frame to operate the switches for the first time.   I reused the telescoping square section motion limiters linked to the new TOUs and had the operating rods from the motors move these. The linkage between the motion limiters and the TOU is soldered directly to the TOU wire but some ad

A long standing project revived

I forget exactly when it was but at a 2mm Expo a few years ago, I was sitting next to Richard Wilson, each of us doing different demos. Richard was working on something that caught my eye. It was a little cast white metal traction engine which looked rather nice. However, cleaning up the wheel spokes was taking rather a long time. I recalled I had the same kit in my gloat box. If I recall correctly, it's a Fleetline Aveling & Porter. Thinking laterally, a good way to avoid the wheel refining

Handle with Care

Fresh off the workbench (as usual, that means almost but not quite finished!) in time for ExpoFest.   These two probably don't quite sit well together... geographically they both carried loads to or from the Hayle Wharf branch but the Esso tanks appear in late 1950s photos and the Bromine tanks around 1970.   The 14T class A tank is a 2mm Association kit with Alclad paint (thanks to Mark 46444 for the tip) and Cambridge Custom Transfers.   The Bromine tank is my own 3d print sat on a Parkw

Brighton 75A: Today's post 130621: The Longest Day's activities

Because I was wrong about the OS plan being in Crown Copyright (Martin W pointed out that the 50 year rule applies, so my 1953 plan is out of copyright), here is the track plan superimposed on the 1:2500 so that you can see the extent and where everything goes. I had got stuck yesterday with not knowing how BR(SR) organised the timbers under points and crossings, but again Martin came to the rescue with a definitive answer. The timbers are usually square to the main running line for a post 19

Fit for a King

I have added photos of my recent impromptu trip to Didcot to my 2013 page. Hopefully it will whet the appetites of those going to the Castle's event later in the year!           My updates haven't been attracting much attention of late, and when people do visit my site, the viewing statistics show that they don't venture away from the linked page. I am considering starting a thread to replace this blog to see if that will improve viewing numbers.   As with all

Northall Dock - Quay

After I tried out several water texture possibilities I was looking for the quay wall texture I want to use. I had bought the dock edge pdf’ s from Scalescenes in the past. This has two options a concrete one and a stone one. I found the concrete one to modern for my diorama. CGtextures.com has a lot of nice textures. They have also some useful dock textures in their collection. I tried several but tried out the concrete one: ConcreteBare0280 (Texture: #35243) I decided to try out the stone w

St Ouen JNWR - 2mm Scratch Built Building

Hi   Whilst building the building for St Ouen, I have been amazed about the lack of basic guidance available on the web about the design and building of scratch built buildings.     The link is below:-   http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/51729-2mm-scratch-built-buildings/   If you are modelling a prototype location all of the buildings will by necessary require to be scratch built.   Lisa

Updates: 20/06/2013

Just a few updates as of this day:   -The Italian tender engine has been put into operational order; it is able to run once again. However because of its temperamental nature it is only working very limited workings. -The Stephenson's Rocket has been obtained as of 12/05/13; it has run but is undergoing overhaul. It is doubtful if the locomotive will operate in the future.   Trainmaster64

BEATTIE 0298 CLASS (7)

Well what with starting the lining on the Hall I have managed to get my Well Tank painted.   You will have to excuse the number of photos, but I like it.   We start off with the main body which unfortunatly used the last of my acid 8 primer. Need to go to the car paint shop I found here.   Next up is the chassi which was done in red oxide, its black so will not matter.   The cylinders were also done in acid 8.   The cab roof and

The Works - Roof Complete (well, nearly!)

The roof covering is complete. Just waiting for some lights to arrive in the post now. There's still a load to do - the gable roof caps and the top capping over the ridge spines (which are channels for the wires for the lights etc). Then it's on to the interior overhead cranes and elevated offices along the back gable end wall. After that it's the locos and all the rest of the stuff needed to complete a realistic works setting.           This is the effect I'm after - a shot of

Why Buckden?

Buckden station was a small station on the Kettering & Huntingdon branch line, originally built by the Midland Railway in 1866 (as Brampton) it transferred to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway upon grouping, and survived until 1959. It was a small station, with a single line serving the handsome station building, small Midland style signal box, weighing machine, cattle dock and between the goods loop and single long curving siding stood an odd shaped goods shed with a small platform o
