Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

The 1970s, 1972 to be precise

During the 1960s and the 1970s it was fashionable to make 35mm colour slides rather than prints. Slides appear remarkably stable, but how to convert them into digital images? I am aware that there is equipment ‘out there’ to be bought, but how much better to capture the images for free. Luckily we still have a quality projector, so the other evening we projected some of our slides onto the kitchen wall and made fresh images with our current digital camera. Two images that I came across were of

William Clarke style Goods Shed part 3 (Corbels revisited!)

In light of the discussion caused by the the corbels in part 2, I decided that a bit more thought was required! After a lot of pondering, I've decided that I still like the idea of the building having corbels, but if they are going to stay, then they had better be done properly! As Nick, Ian, N15 and Iain pointed out, they did look as if they had been stuck on as an afterthought and didn't look at all convincing. This wouldn't do at all, so armed with a glass of red wine and wielding a scalpel,

Go back and do it again!

I've been considering the last few days how I can improve my Robinson stock. The main problem with these carriages is that the removal of the panelling on the donor coaches was patchy at best, and it began to irk me.   What I did was to see if it was possible to do on the upper body sides what I did with the lower, in the way of a paper overlay. I quickly decided that a one-piece overlay was going to be too tedious, so I chose to do it in slips instead. One long slip a cantrail level for t

Enter the WMR

Greetings, all!   It has been kindly pointed out that my last entry belonged in a different section...I'll figure this site out eventually, I'm sure...I'm slow with computers . I appreciate any and all "how-to" tips and tricks anyone shares!   As stated previously, this blog shall follow the construction and development of the fictional standard-gauge Welsh Midland Railway. Opened in 1867, it linked narrow-gauge slate and coal traffic in the mountains with ports in the south of W

DEMU Showcase, Burton

The need to get leaflets out to promote our own show at Weston has sent me off to some events this year which I would not normally have attended. As someone whose railway interest is very much preserved steam (with my model railways falling into the same category), a pure diesel and electric event is not one which would normally interest me. That does not mean I have anything against those who model these forms of railway - everyone is entitled to their own opinion and their own interest! I just

One Hundred and Four.....

Equals another milestone - the last Air Smoothed West Country 34094 Morthoe!   Take one donor, in this case a R2282 'Weymouth' and swap the 5,500gl tender for a 4,500gl one.     Remove all traces of it identity, carry out repairs (fill holes where crests were), fit details and renumber and fit new nameplates etc.     I've also included a close up of the front end work - replacing a lamp bracket that snapped off, adding RT Models drain cocks and removing the fairings in front the cy

Baseboards installed

Giles and John from Elite Baseboards arrived with the boards and worked like Trojans in the sweltering heat. 29 degrees with the air conditioning unit on full blast! The boards are now installed for Cowes to Newport and brilliant they are too! Now it's up to me to get the track laid and wired up, make difficult decisions regarding analogue and DCC, etc. etc. Years of fun lie ahead!     Chris

First outing for the latest project

For the last couple of weeks I have been working on my latest project a model of a typical West Highland extension railway (NBR) signal box in Gauge 1.   Today has seen the first outing in public of the virtually completed structure, at the Bromsgrove Society of Model Engineers open day.   The day had quite a Scottish theme with a Highland Railway Clan, 3 Caledonian Railway locos and a North British Railway B class in steam across the day.   I still have a few jobs to do on the building wi

Aire Valley Railway

Hi. Back from East Grinstead. Did the full trip on the Bluebell line. Not sure that passengers starting at East Grinstead will find it easy, Sainsbury's have cut their parking time down from two hours to ninety minutes so it's a pay and display car park a little distance away. No problems for my party though with living in East Grinstead. My Grandson dropped us off at the station. It was a bonus weekend for me as it was the model railway weekend with layouts at Horsted Keynes and Sheffield

St Ouen JNWR - Finishing Buildings Ready for Planting?

Hi   My 1st attempt to paint a 2mm building. Before I applied any paint to the Smithy, I painted a sample piece.   I been using acrylic paints. The roof is slightly shinny becuase the small quanity of white paint I used to paint the roof tiles, was not a flat white, ie it was gloss.   I also had problems with splashing of roof colour onto the side wall. BUT since the paint used is acrylic it can be wiped off, and I can have another attempt.     Lisa

T9

Evening all It's been a while since I put anything in here, other than the odd photo but... In a quest to build the oldest items in my kit cupboard before I buy anything else, I've been looking at the Finney T9 kit I've had for ages. And looking. And looking. With the realisation that there aren't going to be too many more shows for Wheal Elizabeth I finally stopped looking and decided the time had come to make a start. At least this time the RTR model has appeared before I got round to buil

More Wagons - LMS, GW and PO

Despite it looking like the hottest weekend of the year, I have been wanting to get on with some wagon building... So on the way home from work today I dropped into the model shop and came away with a Ratio LMS van, a Cambrian "Wheeler & Gregory" 4 plank PO and a Cambrian chassis kit (giving the bits to re chassis another old Bachmann model along with the missing bits for a Cambrian LMS open)   This evening I have made a start on building   first up the ratio LMS van, I want to have a

(P4) - 57xx Ultrascale Conversion for Bachmann Example

Success! About 6 years ago I had a bash at converting a standard Bachmann 57xx into a RWS 'Duck', it was nothing more than a face addition, balsa wood sandboxes (Ugh, replacement ideas please?), a couple of paint tweaks, brass number plates...and that's about it. I have been looking for another pannier of the same part number to have another go with more accuracy and care, however it seems Bachmann have discontinued it as I can't find one anywhere. Hopefully they will re-release it. Anyway,

Heworth Sidings - Update - 05/07/2013

Hi,   Just a quick update as we had an evening working session last night to finish attaching the front fascia panels. As all of the front fascia's are now fitted, we now need to profile them so that they follow the terrain.         Cheers, Mark.

O Gauge - White Metal

A whole range of white metal kits and figures from a variety of manufacturers arrived in the post quite a while ago, they just sat in a bin as progress on the layout ground to a halt. Recently things started moving again, and it was quite a surprise to rediscover them. Now was/is the time to assemble and paint them... Here is picture of some of them before painting - all ghosts from a far distant past...   To this day I am not sure what I was thinking when they were ordered.. The Water

Heavy general for a 1366 tank

In the last entry I mentioned my problematic 1366 tank loco, built from a DJH kit. Although I took care building the loco, some distortion crept into the boiler/pannier assembly and once I discovered this - long after painting - it bothered me enough to put the loco away until I thought of a way to tackle the issue. I did not really want to dismantle the body after painting and decaling it.   For some reason I had convinced myself that the pannier top and buffer beam were out of alignment but

Northall Dock – Basin

I have built the Dock Basin. I wanted to opt for try-out no.4 acrylic paste, paint & varnish and a wooden pillar. But unfortunately my acrylic past wasn't doing the job properly. So I made a small change here. Instead of acrylic paste I used Gesso. Gesso is a base that is used to prepare the painting surface for acrylic paintings etc. The edge is made of separate build card edgings stones. On internet I found a stone merchant who had edge quay stones for sale. He also mentioned the size of

P4 Wagons - Update and mini conversion.

The E2 project isn't abandoned, I just need to get around to doing the body.     Ok, so, I haven't been on recently much as has been established for a bunch of reasons. My modelling progress has ground down to a halt and I've made little progress on my layout. Well, really it's almost none as I have been 'waggoning' more than anything and before I make much progress on the layout I wish to get Dingham couplings fitted to a enough examples to accurately test if I like them. This means I need t

Railways in the Landscape

Hi   Whilst travelling back home, from the 2FS Expo 2013 in Wallingford Oxon., I looked out of the train window, and what I saw started me thinking.   Of course railways exist in a landscape, but many modellers build their models as if there are no significant vegetation between the boundary fence and the track. Pre 1985 that might have been more true, up to then the railway had kept their cutting and embankment etc. maintained as a grassy sward. This to prevent the exhaust from steam trains
