Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

O Gauge - Springside Signal-Box Detailing Kit

Having begun and almost finished a white metal kit from Duncan Models - Henry - the Shunting Horse...     There was one more kit left to attempt - the Springside Signal Box Detailing Kit... It is all white metal and requires a great deal of time, focus and concentration. It is, I think, well worth the effort - even if its never going to be seen again, hidden in the signal box, once made. It forced me to consider the layout in terms of a working railway. There was research needed into how th

Diorama design – Road modelling.

Back from my holidays. I walked a lot in the fields and woods in the early morning and late evening ( before sunset). Made some useful grey sky pictures. Because of the sunny weather I did a lot of reading ( inspector Wexford), searching on Internet and following the blogs and forums on the RMweb. Last week it was to hot for modeling in Holland for me.   So here is the entry of my result of my internet research on roads.   For my Nice Street diorama I didn’t much research for the road surfa

Packing Up and Moving On

Despite the lack of posts I have got some work done. Much of it has been drawing bricks and stones but I still haven't got anything finished enough to print out and put together as a final version. Various draft station building have been trialled however. I have also made a pair of signal posts that await fittings and assembled some MSE arms to go on them. An order to Minx microdrives has provided the hardware to make them move when finished, along with bounce, and the interlocking for the leve

Building someone else's layout 2.

Hello all,   I seem to be having a few productive days of late, Todays task was to push my brothers new layout along so out came the tools and i made a start on the bridge that forms the scenic break to the fiddle yard, nothing to adventurous, embossed brick for the walls some plastic strip and a couple of Peco bridge sides job done. I was going to leave it a redish brick colour but instead decided on an engineers blue brick that has been fairly weathered, overall i'm fairly pleased with it.

A view from the line #11 getting close to the wire..the telegraph wire

One of the characteristic views from the coach window when travelling on our railways , until the late 1970's was the continual dipping and rising of the telegraph wires. Telegraph, telephone and signalling block instrument communications were all carried alongside the line suspended from the iconic multi-arm telegraph poles. Whilst the poles themselves are often modelled, there being a number of manufacturers of such in the popular scales, creating the actual wires, especially to scale is somew

Dean Goods part 4 Coming together

The boiler/firebox and smokebox sub assemblies had been temporarily fitted together with a brass screw to check their alignment. The footplate was also nearly complete apart from the front splashers, which can't be fitted until the boiler/smokebox have been fitted to the footplate.   Boiler/Firebox/Smokebox assembly and Footplate   The boiler assembly was checked for fit on the footplate, fortunately very little adjustment was needed to get the boiler to sit in the corect position. My First Dabble With 3D Printing

Freshwater station only has one platform, but it was extended at various times over the years. The first section by the buffers where the locomotive would stand is very low with plain brick facing. It then ramps up to a more normal height. The next section is typical Southern Railway concrete panels from the Exmouth Junction concrete works, while the latest extension used the Southern Railway lightweight concrete trestles, more standard components from Exmouth Junction.   Modelling the

Wait to you see the back drop!

Am amazed (and pretty pleased!), at how that last post seemed to go down and all for a very simple bit of Photo Shopping. Well just wait until you see what I plan to do for the back drop! Oh ! (have just found out you can't say bug ger!). Have just committed myself to something else! I actually have quite a few more unusual features that I want to build into this layout but I did decide not to let on until I have a good idea that they will work so as not to look too foolish. well, I do know my b

Suck-it-&-See

The ‘lift-off’ bridge was always intended as a way of disguising the baseboard joint and will never be a fixture on the layout. Accordingly its weight is of no accord, unlike any thing that is such a fixture. Plasticard was always intended too, mainly because of its ease of welding, a feature which would allow using flat pieces to build up a girder-like structure. In fact, it’s not strictly ‘Plasticard’. Some few years back I took out a bath during a modernisation of our bathroom. The bath side

CLAMPED !

I mentioned the likely need for sky-hooks when I added the sub-base for the top station. I had a think and studied the incline frame trying to work out a plan of action. I cut the outline of the top station foot-print as it is at the footpath / station entrance level, made and attached a vertical "wall" to connect to the lower Patio level. Then tried to offer them up to the incline frame and track. First I put the frame onto my Workmate bench, and realised that it was not upright! Checked the

7. Watching the Glacier Expresses - Hospental

Last day, it's a bit cloudy, and I've presents to buy... so up to Andermatt for souvenir shopping, one hop on the train to Hospental, and a gentle wander back along the valley. The tourist horse-drawn post coach was in town, complete with a man in a van for the luggage, who also had a shovel for cleaning up afterwards:   Every hour at Andermatt, it looks totally chaotic, as coaches are removed from the Brig-Göschenen train, only a portion going forward, while in the station at the same tim

The Wright Stuff

Apologies for yet another picture of my beloved blue King, but I couldn't resist. I thought it might also be worth mentioning that this is partly a Tony Wright build, for it was with Tony's tuition that I put together the Comet chassis during a very enjoyable Missenden Abbey weekend back in - I think - 2006.   Tony must have seen thousands of chassis being built by now, by him or under his supervision, but he might remember that I managed to solder in the axle bearings on the same side of both

Camping Coach #6 - Give me a bunk up!

Armed with nothing more than a few paperclips, scraps of card and Post-It notes two bunk beds have been fabricated for the other two bedrooms     and here they are in place       a couple of ladders might be an idea, wonder if OO Britannia tender ladders will fit .....   Keen eyes will also spot the livery change to choc and cream, if I have the transfers I'll brand it as a BR FK W13227

Freight engines!

Bit busy with loft conversions at the moment (stock all stored away) but I thought some freight engine shots may be of interest   First off a 4F from 8E (Brunswick) 44494 - Wills kit - this one was bought on ebay , renumbered, smoke box door plate courtesy of Mike Edge     and another 8E loco - 44489 - Wills kit bought in Barrow as a semi completed 3 rail loco and tender. New chassis with a D11 motor and new Gibson driving wheels. Again smoke box door plate courtesy of Mike Edge so tha

LSWR 12 TON MACHINERY TRUCK (2)

Here we go for part two. I managed to get the second frane done, slightly quicker than the first so not quite so boring.   I made up my own internal rocking compensation at one end, not pretty but works very well. It took a couple of goes to get the ride hieght correct.   The buffer castings needed a little work as the hole was block, to half way through and the boss to go into the buffer beam was to large, not normally a problem, but these are D shaped. The axle boxes

Couldn't resist a bit of a play

While I was doing some useful work in PhotoShop last night couldn't resist a bit of a play with this pic I took yesterday of the new track section with a Hunslet and a couple of wagons.   And here is the result;

6. C sharp, E and A - a happy tune

Grüezi wohl mitanand. A day of two halves today. Early rain put me off a possible walk up from the Italian side of the Gotthard pass, but the rain left off by about 10, so it's on with the rucksack and away up the side valley from Göschenen. After rain is apparently a good time to see the local salamanders, just sitting on the path, not bothered about running away:   Then through some woods, out into alpine meadows and ever upwards (patience, there's some transport interest coming later):

Going over to the darkside.... the GWR in T Gauge

Well I thought it was about time that I posted something on here again.   As some of you know, I work in the world of museum conservation and am lucky enough to have a job at the NRM. I get to work with a whole range of objects from the large locos right down to some tiny items such as models.   I always enjoy the very fine work in the studios and it has led to me and a colleague to conversations about small model making (he builds models of a non railway variety) and this lead onto me showi

Made in Italy

Just back from my summer hols during which we spent a couple of weeks in Italy.   As relaxation was definitely on the agenda I thought it reasonable to take along a few modelling bits just in case the opportunity presented itself. Most days were spent playing with the traffic on the Italian autostradas to tick off the usual Tuscan destinations but I managed to grab a couple of spells on our quieter days while the other members of the family were keeping out of the heat and struggling to find s

Dean Goods part 3 Footplate, Splashers, Smokebox and Boiler

The footplate was cut from the fret, then the splasher sides were folded up at 90 degrees following the half etched lines. The valance sides, buffer and draw beams were folded 90 degrees down in a similar fashion. The kit provides a footplate overlay incorporating rivet detail, this was soldered into position using Carrs 188 solder paste using a miniflame. The addition of the overlay really stiffens the footplate and gives a good foundation to build the rest of the locomotive on. Similar overlay

Things Arboreal

Yesterday I put all the boards together in the lounge (just!) and let my scenery expert and arranger of sheep (SWMBO) play with the box of trees I bought from www.themodeltreeshop.co.uk . She expressed her approval of these product and armed with some Screwfix Mitre Bond (known as "man glue" in our household) most were planted. Lots more ground cover, weeds, flowers etc needed but it's starting to look like a landscape now

Playing with mud

As the weather has got mercifully cooler have been able to attack another board with paint and mud. Again, with help from my little assistant, the areas between and around the track were given a rough coat of brown acrylic then attacked with the airbrush and then finally finished off with dried and sieved garden dirt and Astonish polish. This is great as it seems to be very 'wet' and does not clump up the dirt but am considering a quick coat of dilute PVA as well. Reason for this is the other bo
