Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Work Progress on the big layout - The 13 foot 4 inch 4 board section.

Having added my diorama in Dorset I checked back to see what was last posted about Castell Mawr. I've probably moved forward enough to post a couple of photographs. This layout offers a 45 foot twin track oval with a scenic substitute for a fiddle yard in the form of two sidings beside each line, these are long enough to hold 2 trains in each although not if running an 8 coach set.   Here we go showing the two central siding boards :-       Today I started adding some grass on the lev

Shocking Neglect - Not been here to post since February.

In truth I'd forgotten what user name I'd used and had so many failed attempts I though I'd never get back in again. Then one moments inspiration - that's a fib, got in at the 4th attempt !! Now having a holiday caravan in Dorset we spend half our time away from home. Not good for the big layout, but gave a chance to play with a diorama based on Dorset landscape. So Shillingstones Lane came about, started in May I think, where three scenic sections just sit on a framework that has a short leng

Bristol Barrow Road - Scalefour North Retrospective

For those who missed Scalefour North earlier this year the Scalefour Society have just added a selection of photos of my layout on the Society website.   http://www.scalefour.org/shows/S4North2013/BristolBarrowRoad/   Since the show I have been concentrated on the additional trackwork at the rear of Lawrence Hill Junction signal box and have surveyed Lawrence Hill road bridge that will form the scenic break at that end of the layout. I have drawn up a plan for this additional scenic board wh

MIDLAND 3130 (6)

I carried on with the tender. It generally went together very well apart from the a few parts undersize.   We have reach the point of adding the castings, which is actually very few, I may well have to sick some wieght inside.   The kit allows for quite a bit of variation with the tender. There is the early tool box, water filler, etches for the rear, or the single filler as I will be fitting. There are parts to make a high front with built in tool boxes. side mounting for ca

Fascia colour - changed my mind again

A visit to that fine emporium, Wilkinsons, saw me returning with a large tin of green paint. I decided that, on balance, the pale blue I'd gone for as the fascia colour for the 4mm layout was a bit cold and offered too much of a contrast with the hues in the scenery. It was fine in the Winter scene (still undecided about what to do there) but didn't really set off the Spring module as well as I'd like. I thought it would look even worse on the Summer module, so I decided to take the plunge and r

Loudwater

Just came across this site when viewing images of Loudwater station, mainly concerning the layout that was shown. Brought back quite a few memories as I lived in the station house from 1960-1964. I moved up from living in Plymouth where my dad worked on the railways and was transferred to High Wycombe/Princes Risborough area. The then station master ( Mr Lewellyn) decided not to live in the station house so we moved in. Loved living there with the trains rumbling past my bedroom window. Used to

some LMS passenger tanks..

So having stock locked into all parts of the house while a loft conversion takes place I have found a few photos of "different" ex LMS passenger tank engines.   First up   A Jidenco ( well partly) Stanier 0-4-4T.     Built by my late father who had to do a bit of scrtach building to get it as right as he could. Romford wheels and X04 type motor.   and to follow up, a Craftsman Midland 0-4-4T built by Nicktoix - I changed the wheels as I can't get on with the older Sharman Wheels

Did this ever happen?

A bit of a query...   ... my period of interest is the mid 1920's. Early days of the LNER and when the liveries were probably most interesting. Most of my builds so far (well, of them) are of locos toward the end of this era, 1927/28-ish when the livery had standardised (that is, when pretty much all of the pregrouping engines had been repainted). But I'd like to do at least one model 'the other way'- very early days (1923/24-ish).   So; the last D9 was repainted into LNER apple green in

A pair of Taff 37's because I won some nameplates for £3.64

A couple of months ago I had an ebay bidding frenzy on a pair of Geoffrey Allison nameplates, these nameplates went up to £16.52, so I didn't win then, I should have left it alone !!! but low and behold a week later another set appeared on ebay, I stuck on a bid of £11.00, but too my surprise I won them for £3.64, I duly paid my Paypal payment and a couple of days later in the post arrived the nameplates.     37 711 "Tremorfa Steelworks" and 37 712 "The Cardiff Rod Mill", One cheap 37514 fo

The SouthWest Trains class 450 conversion - all but complete

The class 450 conversion from a Bachmann Silverlink class 350/1 is now all but complete. There are a few very minor tweaks and finishing touches to do but the unit is now running as a complete four-car set in one livery.   It's not perfect. I have a few small air bubbles, a couple of small lumps in the paint underneath, and I cut and partly hand-painted the front end stripes to correct the Electra printing. It still saved an awful lot of work in adding the various livery elements and looks abs

Western Invader - taking delivery of the Dapol Western

On Friday I popped into Lord & Butler in Cardiff and collected one of their limited edition versions of the Dapol Western. This is Western Invader, with no warning panel and yellow buffer beams, and my example has also been shop weathered by L&B. I also took home a decoder, but for now my model has been running in on DC.   I've seen some adverse criticism of the model, but overall I'm pretty happy with my example. It was certainly noisier than I anticipated, but after an hour's running

Going Round The Twist For St. Ruth - Trees Pt 1

I was hoping that I would be able to add this entry to the 2mm Midland Area Group's St Ruth blog (http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/595-st-ruth/), but despite assurances from Andy (D869) I don't seem to have the ability. Never mind I'll post it in my own blog for now.   At the last Area Group Meeting, I rather foolishly / bravely / enthusiastically (delete as appropriate) said that I would have a go at making some trees for St Ruth - We plan to have a wooded section behind the b

Signaling questions? He hasn't even finished the baseboards yet!

Progress on the baseboards continues at a pace with the ply framing now constructed for two boards and mostly complete for the third. So far I'm rather pleased with how it looks.     from the railway room door things begin to take shape. The templot plan is laid down and the two large mill buildings fit nicely.     Underneath the layout the ply frame is nice and stiff and fitted with lots of useful holes to feed wires through.     Looking across the workbench and you see the area

One step forwards, more backwards

I have been hanging on since my last contribution hoping to be able to report some real progress but, far from that, I have to report regress (i.e. retrogression). I have mentioned elsewhere my problem with arthritic fingers and the risk of hitting the wrong lever of the passing switches for the point motors, with the risk of damaging the motors. I replaced two damaged motors and, furthermore, installed pushbutton switches. These are supposed to give feedback information via leds but do not do s

Hard week in the office

Hi All,   I'm just back from a week of visiting North Wales' finest: the narrow gauge lines. So while I try and get a grip on the amount of video (over 90 minutes) and the photo's (about 500), here is an introduction!   The whole thing started when I realised just how many preserved lines there are in North Wales, but being on my own it isn't much fun, however now that a couple of friends have come out of the guard's van as it were and professed for their love of trains (especially steam), a

Movement in the outdoor track and Fracking hasn't even started yet

Spent Friday trying to sort out a quarter inch gap that has opened up between the viaduct and the rockery. Given that all parts of the layout are massively over engineered, I was puzzled as to how this movement occurred with enough strength to shear the screws holding the trackbed down.   Anyway have got this mostly sorted out in a day, with a friends help and had just enough daylight left to get a pic of his locos on a test run.

Ruddington 2013

A free Saturday gave me the chance to visit the Ruddington show today. This show, like the Midland Rail-ex at Butterley, spreads its exhibits around several buildings on the Nottingham Heritage Centre site. The main exhibition takes place inside the loco shed, with the layouts and traders tucked inbetween the various items of rolling stock. Space is certainly limited. Inside the shed there were 4 traders and 7 layouts. The best of these was the 0 gauge "Camden" shed model which I saw at the Derb

Progress on the hidden loops

Photo showing progress as of tonight on the hidden loops (using Peco Streamline for expedience's sake). The tracks leading off to the right are the return loops representing the Sandown and Ryde lines. Each will hold two trains of the maximum length I have planned for (the equivalent of loco, four full length carriages and a 4 wheeled van). All trains will travel clockwise around the loops, with entry being controlled by a pair of crossovers allowing entry and access from either line out of Newp

Back to the B5

Well, it had to happen eventually.   After finishing my Met Bo-Bo and reworking my current rake of GC Robinson stock, I looked to my locomotives and specifically, the B5.   On the whole when I finished it I was pleased, but over the last few weeks the lining irked me, and after I remedied that by painting it out the grainy nature of the basic material started to annoy me.   There was only really one way out of this, save scrapping the whole thing and starting over. I removed the brass

Diorama design - Weathering

Still too hot for me and my card modelling. So you have to wait for some modelling progress.   Basic materials for my card models   For the making of my diorama’s I use textures that I print out. I know there is a lot of discussion about what kind of printer you should use. I use a HP Photosmart Office printer. For printing I use the following:   - Mostly light crème drawing paper for walls - Water color paper for roofs, rough walls - A good quality printing paper for metal - The

Class 450 conversion - third coach converted and fourth in progress

Work continues apace on the class 450 conversion. I have taken a couple of photos showing all four cars, with the first two all but complete, the third prepared to accept the vinyls and the fourth with the first coats of red paint on the roof but otherwise untouched.       And another two with the vinyls now applied to the third (composite) coach. I scraped the existing "first class" wording off the windows with a wooden cocktail stick before applying the vinyl sides. I have also altered

The Permanent-Way Forward

My last promise to update within 6 months may have been broken quite resoundingly…   I have been slowly plugging away at some of the projects, the main one to finish off the 14xx “Vomit Comet,” project in order to run it at St Ruth’s various outings, more on this to follow soon.   I have also been making a start on the trackwork that will be eventually laid on my dual-boxfile layout “Congdon’s Shop.” As the layout is small, I decided that “easi-track,” points were the way to go, sacrificing
