Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Building a scrapyard loco

This is a set of photos of one of the scrapyard locos that I started in order to "hone my rusty skills" Its a Dapol 61XX class witch I have modelled to represent it in the process of it being cut up. This went off my original concept of representing a rusty hulk set in the 1970-1980`s this would be more suited to the late1960`s when many places would have had such a scene.

Intro

I have started this Blog as a means to track my progress as I begin to return to my most favoured hobby of my youth. I last had a model railway over 28 years ago and always intended to get back into it one day and to possibly to go down the P4 or EM route. However I now do not wish to spend time and expense that it would take to learn to build my own track and modify rolling stock at this time so I will be going down the OO route. The fantastic level of detail available in RTR now, compared to

Isle Of Man Empress Van - Roxey Mouldings I

Well, I've finally bitten the bullet and begun a journey into 12mm gauge as well as 009 (and 00!) My first foray is a Roxey Mouldings Isle of Man Empress Van. I ordered it a week or so ago and this morning it dropped through my letterbox. I do intend to build a second set of bogies for the vehicle so that I can also run it on my 009 layout (after all, the Ffestiniog have a number of carriages built on ex-IoM underframes, so there is almost a premise!)     I've never built a Roxey kit before

Updated Track Plan

The new track plan has a revised layout for the Burgh Island section. The island is now slightly smaller, but is now surrounded by water. This should make it easier to create the illusion that the island is “floating” in the sea.   The track layout from St Mary Mead to Burgh Island now has a gentle curve to it, in an attempt to get rid of the “train set” look of the straight lines.   Follow my blog at murderonthetracks.co.uk

my next kit - 3 plank Wagon

Photographs can be very cruel! Looking at the photo of the handbrake ratchet in my previous entry, all I see is the huge tab, which I have not filed smoothly. It's invisible in practice but not on the photo! It's a real test, to subject modelling to this type of scrutiny.   My favourite weapons for removing those pips, as well as flash on white metal, are emery nail boards from the pharmacy. They're cheap and disposable, and don't get ruined by white metal, so saving my precious needle

Urban diorama design – Street Scene Design

To add some details to Northall Dock I did some research. As a guide I used the Hounslow - Street Scene Design Guide from October 2012. Although not the area I’m building it gives a good overview of how you can design streets and what kind of elements are used. From this guide I selected the following vertical street elements: Advertising signs and A-boards Bespoke Furniture Bins Bollards Boundary Railings Bus Shelters Street lighting Covers and gratings Sur

Manning-Wardle 'H' Class. Part 3 of a Pug Bash

Over the past few days I've managed to get the component parts together and we're now at this stage.     I painted the inside of the cab before assembly with a Revell green acrylic applying washes and dry brushes to finish. This was masked off with tissue paper when I sprayed the loco.     As you can see various bits of wire have been used for detailing along with parts from the Pug including the reversing lever. One thing I did do is remove the sandboxes from the chassis. Luckily i

O Gauge Layout - The Story Continues

It's been a while and a little more progress has been made... The layout has gotten a name - 'Barcoombe' I don't know why it sort of came to me and has been pleasantly irritating me ever since.   The missing stove for the Springside signal-box detailing kit arrived and now the signalman can keep warm, dry and have a cup of tea... Springside were very good about the missing part - even though I bought he kit over a year ago - and sent it over for free.     I managed to acquire some Skyt

How long can I keep this up?

Keep what up? Well a blog on constructing a layout without actually getting anything built! Hopefully not for much longer as is getting very frustrating! Still very hectic work wise but did manage to fit in a short mid week break with some old friends which was not without some purpose for my project. I strongly believe that it is always good to talk to people about things and from a very obscure conversation over a a campfire a rather intriguing idea arose for my backscene. I already have a pre

Roofing the canopy

I decided that the quickest (and prototypically correct) finish for the canopy was to represent 'board & batten' - where the roof (or wall) is covered by timber boards of a fixed width, butt-jointed together. The weather-proofing comes from the 'batten' - again timber of a fixed width - that is fixed over the board joints (sorry if this is 'suck eggs' time, but there MIGHT be modellers out there that don't know!).     The hole ('light') in the canopy allows three things - 1, as in the

Southern GP7's

An old shot from the archive.   The black GP-7 is an Atlas/Kato from the early 90's. I went to the model railway shop in Eastbourne and asked to see the 'new' Atlas GP-7. The running was outstanding, at £42 very expensive. I went home with the non dynamic brake version. The following week I went back and got the other one. Both were in Canadian National green. They were repainted using Humbrol Dirty Black. A tip from someone else was to open the tin and decant off the clear liquid from the top

Standard Eight - 2nd time round

Way back in the mists of time (2007) I built my first BR Standard "neverwazza" the 8F 2-8-0 that was in the 1956 build programme but never made it into metal   http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=8690&hilit=+93xxx   It has run successfully on Summat Colliery ever since and always provokes a reaction when folks clock the number and count the wheels etc. However, it's tender drive makes it tricky to add sound to and as the only remaining tender drive loco in the operating

YMR BR MK1 SK. A quick project.

Yesterday I managed to pick up two of these Your Model Railway £3.99 MK1 SK coaches from ASDA in Rushden for a friend of mine. He asked if I'd put numbers on them and weather them for him too.   Thanks to David I was able to source a suitable number for an Eastern Region example. Here's the link to David's in depth posting on the SK number series:   http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/75546-br-mk-1-sk-coach-number-series/&do=findComment&comment=1143408   If you've got

'Lord Faringdon'

There were three ex-GC 4-6-0s on Ebay this evening and I came away with one of them.   The other two were a B6 and a 'Sam Fay' (which I was also bidding on but lost in the last 5 seconds )   Anyway, I ended up with a B3 or 'Lord Faringdon' class.     There are a few things with it that are suspect and I'm sure I can improve. I'm considering giving it a new chassis, new cab sides and a new paint job at the very least, and at the end of it I'l have a nice and certainly unusual additio

Guernsey Railway

Hi   I am currently on holiday in Guernsey. On Monday, 26th August, bank holiday, I visited the only railway on the island.     http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/guernsey/hi/people_and_places/history/newsid_8849000/8849444.stm     2nd Picture posted from phone.   Lisa

Building the King's Arms - 3

Well, I've finally finished the main layer of the external walls. I decided to scrap completely my first attempt at the front left elevation and do it all again, without those compass cutters, rather than try to add in a replacement section. I'm moderately pleased with the walls so far, though there's one repair still to be made to one window in the rear elevation. Apart from the eight that I mucked up at my first attempt, virtually all the rest of the windows in the building are of different

Free Mk One Carriages?

Hi All   A new TV advert appeared at lunchtime today- a multi part magazine called "Your Model Railway Village"- a 120 part production to enable you to build a layout and 1960s style village. Part one is £3.99 with other parts to cost £8.99.   Part one has an odd piece of track attached plus a BR Mk1 Compartment carriage- which is lined, but un numbered and without any roundels on it. The roof probably needs painting too.   No obvious makers names - but made in China. It matches the size a

Some curiosities.....

For some reason I have ended up with two directors' saloons and their locos - neither of which I can really make use of!   First Up an M&L LNWR Cornwall and Saloon.   hand lined (I must be mad!!) I built the saloon, my late father the loco - and this has visited many, many layouts over the years.   And now a NER Class A - scratchbuilt by father, painted by me..   and then a D &S Inspection Saloon painted and lined by me with some Steve Barnfield transfers..     last seen

Turning Back the Clock - N6 Horse Box

NB There is a newer version of this post at :   In my OP in this Blog, I referred to the need for plenty of horses and the facilities to support them. As part of "Turning Back the Clock", I decided that an essential railway vehicle would be the Horse Box, so I chose to build the Wizard Models/51L etched brass kit of the GWR diagram N6 box.   I felt that the N6 was a suitable design for a beginner in etched-brass construction, as the prototypes, dating from 1890, were of a pa

Trefeglwvs Road Cambrian Railways 2

Hi   This is the first time I have used flexible track on a layout. I have however previously cut Settrack sections, to allow more flexible design. I have watched a DVD on track laying, by Bob Phelps, which included the techniques of pre-bending curves and measuring the rail length in place.   The circle is formed using code 75 track, whilst the point that I have used is code 100 Settrack. I have curved the Settrack point, by cutting the webs under the rails. When I tried using the Settrack

Where It All Started - 'D' Shop

The goodies arrived from Hattons yesterday. I've taken advantage of their bargain section and got these two smashing beauties for only a little over £110! These are my birthday present and were therefore a legal purchase for a change!!!   The first pic of an Ivatt Class 4 Mogul and was the prototype for the BR Standard 4MT. Note the double chimney - this was reduced to a single when it was found that they could double the boiler pressure with the new arrangement. This pic (June 1949) was t
