Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Close coupling mixed rakes of Bachmann and Hornby/Airfix coaches

Close coupling mixed rakes of coaches will always be a compromise in this house. While I would mostly be happy with fixed sets, my 10 year old son likes to marshall them, so a semi-permanent close coupler such as the Bachmann (dummy pipe) 36-060 is not an option. Also, trying to turn potentially long rakes of coaches from their sides to their wheels isn't practical.   With regard to the Airfix origin Hornby Mk2s, I originally intended to fit a close coupling mechanism manufactured by Keen Syst

Never Enough Time .......

The latest information is that we should be moving around the last week of November. So much to do & so little time, as a result I've started simplifying some areas. I've now grassed the small bank behind the goods line and to try & keep the enthusiasm up photographed while still wet with adhesive !     I had a small accident back in February when one station board toppled onto it's scenic side destroying the ratio fencing stuck all along the rear platform retaining wall. Now all r

Fisherton Sarum appears in Model Rail Magazine

Although still October, the December 2013 issue (Number 189) of Model Rail Magazine hits the newsagent shelves today and features an article about Fisherton Sarum.   The article is written around a completely new stunning set of photographs by Chris Nevard. As well as the obvious details about the layout the article focuses through some of the text and the great photography on my kit built rather than Ready-To-Run rolling stock. Those using the iPad app will also be able to view a g

Tender Drive

Hi, I have two tender drives. One is A Dapol and the other Airfix. Both sound like coffee grinders in spite of greasing the gears and oiling bearings. Has anyone any suggestions on how to cure this annoyance or is there a replacement drive to fit these tenders which are both Fowler 3500gal items.   Howard.

I've suddenly got into Babylon 5

But that's not related to the rest my modelling of the ex-LNER brake van which is now looking more brake van and even more ex-LNER.     I've also made a crack at painting my sulphate wagon using Railmatch early BR and LNER grey to simulated fading wood on the doors. Hopefully this will show when the wagons are properly weathered.     For a more insightful and E.L James hating update, please read my blog. May contain traces of opinion.   http://sylviantennant.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/i-

GRONK (6)

Well I am hoping by now you have guessed what it is?   I have been sorting the body out. In the photos the body is just resting on the footplate, in reality there are eight 10BA screws that hold the two together and it lines up better with less gaps. This is to make painting easier.   I found the bonnets end formers a bit flat on top so the gaps are filled with solder. I also found the vertical straps over the top were a bit wide, or my forming was poor, but with cuttin

Onwards and upwards?

Onwards and upwards – well I guess it depends on the direction of travel. The Branch Terminus and the Branch Junction described in my last posts are actually the highest parts of the layout being 158 mm higher than the original Main Terminus. Continuing our journey from the Branch Junction the title of this Post should probably read ‘Downhill all the way’ – I think not! The Main Junction –wide angle   The Main Junction –panoramic   There are two single track lines from the Branch Juncti

59004 - new chassis

A few weeks back at Scaleforum, I got into a conversation about Mendip operations, causing a bit of a spike in my interest in getting on with finishing a couple of my stone projects   59004 uses a lima 59/0 body on a Bachmann Class 66 chassis. The chassis has been modified with the lima sideframes (suitably modified to add the missing corner), modified Bachmann fuel tanks and scratch built air tanks / battery boxes. The chassis is now finished and painted (and converted to P4), which just l

O Gauge - Childrey Manor

The days grow short and the nights longer and its time to get back to some serious modelling... However I have yet to pluck up the courage or whatever it is that is needed to assemble and paint a brass kit of a working loco. In the meanwhile I have turned to the manufacturers of RTR locos. The latest arrival is a model of Childrey Manor - commissioned from Tower in Blackpool.     It was made by San Cheng in Korea as supplied by Finescale Brass to Tower who completed it for me. I placed

A CHANGE OF SCALE.......

After a great deal of soul searching, I have decided that I'm going to have to be a 2mm man! I've decided that what I really want is a railway in a landscape. In a 6' x 4' shed, I've realised that this is going to impossible in 00, if I really want to do the scenery justice. I already have a location in mind (fictitous branch line, off a real railway line).   For me to finance this change of scale, I will need to sell my existing 00 gauge models, most of which are "work in progress" but I do h

LNER/BR B17/6 61633 Kimbolton Castle

I'm not normally an Eastern Region modeller although a few classes do stand out. The big Pacifics don't interest me as such and it's the more humble classes like a J15 that appeal to me more. One class that I've always thought had really graceful lines was Gresley's LNER B17 with a short GE tender.   Earlier on in the year I brought a BR version and I really must say this is a beautiful model that Hornby have produced and captures the protype welll. It doesn't have the robustness of a Bachm

Pictures as promised

I promised to take some pics of the stuff I entered in our competition at Manchester MRS. First is a solo pic.’ (taken for my stock records in case of theft!) of the Airfix crane that I talked about some months ago. In real life it looks rather more careworn than in this picture. I’ve decided to cheat reality a little and I now have “Gorton Shed’s track maintenance train” to run up the Hayfield Branch, (see Pic. 2). This train is shown here still on its display unit for the show.   The next

A Sentinel diesel

While doing a demo at Leeds Show over the weekend Mike Edge passed me a few locos to weather. The Sentinel six wheeler is a particular favourite of mine and Mike had a good selection of colour photos of a number of these locos showing where they get dirty and rusty. First up a side on shot     The detail along the lower edge of the side sheets makes use of weathering powder added to wet ink.     this three quarters front view shows the build up of grease and muck on the buffer heads -

More Scapyard BoB/WC Class beginnings.

Decided to attempt to scratch build a BoB boiler as I feel it would teach me a lot and I would be able to have a very detailed and dilapidated version of a rebuilt and unrebuilt locos. My biggest problem is that I only have photos from around the web and a couple of really poor plans of just one side. So my versions will be very detailed but not as accurate as I would like. Much of the build so far comes from looking at photos and judging by eye and the exhisting Dapol kit.

2013 Club Open Day

Well, we managed our forth club open day on Sunday, and yet again were able to muster up a decent range of layouts, some nice cakes and plenty of conversation. A quick guide to what was on show is below...   Ehrwald (N Gauge) - Mr Chairman's very attractive alpine layout based on a real location.   Warehouse District (H0) - still under construction, but subject to some progress below. There were all sorts of sound-fitted orange and black locomotives shuttling to and fro on here.   The

Phoebe and Teign. Industrial locos for my Teign Valley Project

Sometimes partners go together quite well. There's been Cagney and Lacey and Morse and Lewis for example.   Now we have Phoebe and Teign who will be the industrial motive power on my Teign Valley project. Phoebe will also migrate to the East Midlands for work on Juniper Hill when required also.   I've discussed the build of Phoebe in other entries but she was all but finished except for her name and works plates. These are custom made ones from the excellent Narrow Planet team and are works

Storms Hit Highclere

Hello.   The October storms have been felt already at Highclere as one of the pines sadly has suffered to the high winds...     Fortunately minimal damage occurred and no-one was injured as the tree was felled by the severe storm with gusts of wind estimated at around 70 m.p.h.   Other news include the receipt of some more lovely 3D printed bits fresh from Rabs excellent printer...     I cant wait to get my modelling tools around these bits! Thanks Rabs.   Missy

"Immingham" Part VI

A few weeks since the last update and I'm pleased to say the model is, for all intents and purposes, finished!         The model was painted using Humbrol acrylics and Revell enamels. The apple green was made up using a single coat of Revell 'leaf green' which was then given three coats of Humrol 'apple green', because the Humbrol colour is so thin as to need a bit of help to get a decent deep colour.   I found some Hornby handrail on that well-known internet auction site and used a

Trefeglwvs Road Cambrian Railways 16

Hi   I've had some problems with my computer recently, thanks once again to Andy Y and others for your help.   I am very happy with the basic design of the layout. I can run trains in Roundy Roundy mode, for test purposes and to run in new items of rolling stock and locomotives. I can run it as a end to end using a sequence. With a few modifications I will be able to transport it to club nights and exhibition etc. I can even use it to test my blue diesel fleet!   Although I have also had p

SR Dia1379 (2)

Right amongst the other things I have been doing, I have got this Parkside wagon finished. It has been a while in the workshop but is now ready to be possibly weathered when I have done some experiments.   It was finished in Precision SR wagon brown and a flat varnish after the transfers where fixed. The brown for some reason here always looks washed out in the photos.   I will soon have to get the layout started as I almost have a small goods train, with the wagons almost fi

Lighting and background.

I had to find a solution for my the lighting and background of my APA-box diorama. Due my multiple chemical sensitivity I’m not able to do any soldering. So I have to search for other possibilities. I find this one of the most difficult jobs for my diorama’s.   I use a led strips from IKEA with the following description: light temperature 2700 K / 30 lumen. This is enough for a APA-box. I have used them also for Nice Street (Urban Scene). This time the led strip is adjusted at the front of th

Toiling Trabbi – Mitteldeutsche Eisenbahn's rendition of a popular LEW electric by Roco

Morning all!   As you will have noticed, this is the first new entry on this-here blog after my move to Leipzig, and fittingly, we'll be looking at a class 143 locomotive connoisseurs of the German railway scene will know to have originated in the former German Democratic Republic. Furthermore, the model we'll be looking at depicts a 143 owned by Mitteldeutsche Eisenbahn – abbreviated as MEG – , who are a freight TOC headquartered at Schkopau, located 11 kilometres south of Halle and therefore

Bootlace Ferrules

What is a bootlace ferrule? Answer, it’s a very convenient fitting to attach to the end of a wire that will then fit very snugly into a screw terminal. The DCC world is full of equipment that is supplied with rows of screw terminals. I find that connecting bare wire into these a very hit […]   Source
