Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Aire Valley Railway

Hi all. A nice sunny but very chilly day here in the South Lakes. Took the chance to take some images on my "Garden Line". This is the only model railway I have left and if I don't make an effort to post a blog on it it will get passed over. Don't get to expectant regarding this line. It's very simple and was in fact built for a reason other than a model railway. When we moved up here at the end of the last century (that has quite a pioneering ring about it) the front lawn was in a bit of

Going off line for a while - After a good send off

Well Tuesday evening was a sad one ...... were it not for the warmth of MKMRS members. We had a special evening as one Andy York was coming to our club, some future article ?   During all of this it was announced that it would be my last visit as moving home is almost upon us and I expect to be transferring a couple of layouts to Dorset next Tuesday. I was almost embarrased by the number of members who said they'd miss me. What can I say ..... This club has been welcoming and I've enjoyed

Another complete (in itself) loco collection possibility now - part 7

I must apologise for not posting any updates on this ongoing project.   The big news is ... I'm at a crucial stage now - eleven locos already bought, one more to buy!   The final loco will be a Great Central Rly class, but I'm waiting to see when Bachmann's forthcoming J11 will appear in pre-grouping livery.   My most recent addition has been the NRM/Locomotion's Lancashire & Yorkshire limited edition 2-4-2T which will be amended to represent Wirral Railway no.6.   At one stage I ne

Another Updated Layout Plan!

One of the issues of the previous layout design was room for storage. I have now decided to have a double-layer layout, so that when the trains disappear under the London Section they descend to a lower level for storage and can be turned around on a turning loop. This new arrangement also simplifies the track layout on the top layer.   The space that has now been freed up will also allow the London Section to grow across to the left and blend into the Paddington Section (which makes a lot of

Hi   I haven’t done much in the last few days, too much work to be done! Still I've finished of the wiring of the fiddleyard area. The NEC Autoswitch won't work with my controller, so I'm in the throws of returning it.     Below are the three versions of the power bus cable clamps. The first design was difficult to replicate, the second design was easier to make in quantities, the third is basically the same as the second, turned over, with one less part, using the baseboard to replace it

More 19th Century Thoughts

Most of my entries in this blog, so far, have related to locomotives and rolling stock. For most of us , these are the key elements of a model railway and involve a lot of scratch or kit building, since very few pre-grouping (and especially pre-WW1) models are available as RTR.   Now, I am starting to think about scenery aspects and have realised that there is something of a paradox when 'turning back the clock'. We tend to think of 'older' as meaning 'quainter' and more 'weathered' wh

The Main Junction – a Different Perspective.

Following on from my last Post I am showing some more pictures of the Main Junction Station concentrating on the ‘through’ tracks that form the Mainline.   The Main Junction – overview with two Bachmann Scots in the centre two way road   To help locate the pictures I have turned the track plan presented in my last post from the vertical to the horizontal.   The Main Junction – not to scale   The preferred through routes I have labelled as Up and Down Main.   First some trains passi

Ford Model T Ambulance

While I continue to ponder exactly what I am going to do with the village end of the layout I thought another little distraction would be in order, hence I have set about an ambulance based on a Ford Model T. I did wonder if I could get away with a Polish plastic kit that is available and is an ambulance but true to my usual form I have taken the hard route. I therefore got one of the Duncan Models parcel vans which I thought could be modified. The kit as it stands should build one like this but

More Trial (and Error)

More trial (and error)   Having visited Bridgnorth again, I felt that I had enough information to attempt a trial build of the top station. Sorry, no drawing with this blog, my computer with the Autocad program has died!   I was not happy with the foam-board used for the trial build of the lower station, so started with cardboard. I did try Corn-flake packet card as used by Chubber, but I thought the texture a little coarse, so I used a Supermarket Chinese, Meal for Two, take-away package c

NLR No 1 Class works photos

Found a useful postcard photo of No47 during a visit to Bow Works and on the adjacent track frame and cylinders during a major overhaul, which pretty much confirms my 'guesstimates' on them and the motion plate.

First Outing - Not a success :-(

Not posted for a while as I've been preparing for the first outing of Crawley Yard to the club so that the initial checks could be completed with the wiring, construction, alignment and get some feedback on the build, scenics and operation. I'd chosen this weekend as there was a Saturday running morning as well which meant I could set up on the Friday and tear down on the Saturday. I finally finished the covers on Friday afternoon, I'd wanted them painted so that when the layout is in storage in

Gettting Plans

Although my layout is set in the 1950s I want to have a collection of Network Rail Stock for my Modernisation Plan - Not BR style Does anybody know where to get plans for Current rolling stock (Tampers, cranes etc) in 00?

NLR No 1 Class motion plate

Thinking about the whole slide bar / motion plate problem led me to looking through my archive where I found a works drawing of a later period, which showed half the motion plate and using the magic of Photoshop I again copied, flipped and joined the images to give me a complete motion plate. It may be a pig to cut out of brass so I might make a pattern and cast them in whitemetal instead.     'course the slidebars are something else again...........................

Finally found the GSWR Baltic Tank - its rough and ready but does give you an idea of how well proportioned these locos were. Built by my father in plasticard on a Triang chassis

Freightliner Flats - going multimodal

I'm making up a set of 5 Hornby/Triang container flats. I have bought 3 from the internet and 1 from the Spalding show to add to the 1 I have had for years. The first 2 to arrive in the post with a Yeoman PGA wagon that came at the same time. The track was an unexpected bonus included with one of the Freightliners. This is the latest, £9 from the 2013 Spalding show. All 5 will undergo weathering shortly and a couple will need container doors fixing/replacing but I'm not sure of the best

Poppies Mk2

While the ballast was busy drying (takes a while!), I amused myself by working on a little idea that came to me while doing the wiring the other day. Firstly I took a bit of red wire insulation with the wire removed and shoved (there is no better word for this!), a bit of thinner black insulation right up it (they don't like it up them Mr Mainwaring!). I then cut the very finest slices off the end of this then attached a bit of field grass which had been dipped in super glue and suddenly we have

2mm Scale GWR Diagram AA16 Brake Van

What with a change of job and one or two modelling projects either stalling or taking longer than expected, it’s been a while since I last posted on RMweb though I didn’t realise till now that it was over 18 months.   Having recently finished the paint job on a couple of GWR wagons and taken some final pictures now seems a good time to add a blog about the diagram AA16 brake van.   Detailed notes on the construction of this David Eveleigh designed etched kit have already been written up by G

The jolly old Hornby Dublo 3 - Rail.....big decision time!

Possibly I didn't appreciate model railways as much when I was a young lad, but the one thing I did do right, was to keep my old 3 - rail model railway nicely boxed. Having retrieved the old Hornby Dublo out of the loft, it's nice to see how it has lasted in time.......and it still looks good in its old blue & white stripe boxes.   With the Wren track, metal level crossings, "Ludlow Castle" 4-6-0 steam engine, tin coaches, various types of wagons accompanied with homemade platforms, signal

An even longer "Longest Day"

Weston-on-Trent Model Railway Show 2013   Last year I wrote a blog entry, entitled "The Longest Day", to recount the events of the inaugral Weston-on-Trent model railway show. Without doubt this year's event produced an even longer "longest" day.   For me the Weston 2013 event began with an unwelcome 5am alarm. This was followed by a leisurely breakfast, before I embarked on the "ninja" loading up of the car as I tried to load up Skaleby West without disturbing my slumbering wife and daugh

Hi   I've now reconnected both sides of the circle, following the cutting of the baseboard into two. This was a more lengthy process than expected, because of the very small radius curves used on the layout.   I have also started the proper DCC wiring of the fiddleyard board, since red and black wire are difficult to buy, in the correct gauge, for the power bus, I have substituted brown for red and Blue for black. The DCC standards are set in the US, where power cable use red and black colou
