Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Paint it Black .(Jagger/Richards 1966)

Hello again,   As you may recall my blog is aimed squarely at our newer modlellers seeking advice and inspiration. This particular article focuses on protoype observation.   What can we glean from these pictures?   1,British Railways Mixed Traffic lined black in all its glory. with the earlier tender emblem 1950-56. 2,Locomotive is preserved and general condition is clean(ed) in service.   So how does this compare with your newly acquired prize possessio

Street Signs

After I decided to place Northall as postcode borough W16 in Greater London. I wanted to use also a personalized street name sign, approved by the Northall Council.   I found a good article on internet how street name signs have to be used and designed.   The most important design advices I have copied below:     “Street nameplates shall be of uniform design throughout the Administrative County of London and shall be constructed as follows: (i) Of durable, non-absorbent material. (ii)

Home-made Lining & Lettering - 1

A couple of members on the forums have indicated that they would like to know more details of how I create my own transfers for lining and lettering pre-grouping models.   I have already written a little in my earlier post "Cheats Lining & Lettering" and I must also admit that, because I model GWR prototypes, much of what is needed can actually be bought from the trade! I am one of those "scratch-builders" that likes to do things "because I can"   I use a Windows PC, together with Adobe

Delph - Signal box grounded.

The signal box has been modified to overcome the problem mentioned in the previous entry. A 3 mm wide slot was gouged in the underside using a custom made chisel (ground up from a screwdriver). Slots to accommodate the point rods were then cut in the front wall - very carefully, so as not to damage the paint finish applied by Gravy Train. I had been rather apprehensive about hacking at a fully finished model but it proved not as difficult as I'd anticipated. Let's hope that also applied to the

Boxfile musings...

Morning all. I haven't posted anything for almost the entire year! Real life gets in the way sometimes I suppose. I still have my inglenook-style baseboard and use it to run my stock, but bar some aborted ballasting I seem to be getting no further than the last photograph I shared.   So in an effort to reignite my mojo, I've been pottering around with some small kits, such as the Ratio coal yard in the pic above. It's got me thinking. One (3 way?) point and a boxfile, and I can try out all tho

Cement Works Part 2 - Buildings and structures built- scenics started

The picture below represents the starting point for the next phase which includes finishing off the conveyor systems and the buildings and starting work on the scenics as well as the excavation for the conveyor pits. I used the theme board as a back which sets the model off nicely but the light reflecting is something to look at next time.         The picture below shows the problem with conveyor 3 going into the drying tower where I didnt get the angles quite right. Just going to do some

Still Not Having A Rest

I’ve not laid hand on either of the part-finished C13 chassis for the last few weeks. One or indeed, two “other activities” were referred to last post but since then the computer has been active with me trying to grasp the skill of producing drawings for etching.   My tutor has said that I’m nearly there and that I should draw something I would like to actually send off and have etched. This needs careful thought because there is an initial charge around £50 - £100 to set up.   I have decide

Roof tiles have arrived.

Well not actually tiles but a big box of white 'Art Straws'. Plan is to colour them. split down the middle and snip to size then scatter liberally in and around the building. OK first problem - how to colour them. After a couple of experiments the Colron wood dye worked the best to soak them but the one I have is far too brown. Have actually just had a moment of inspiration - years ago I bought three tins of bright coloured wood dye fom a wooden toy that never got used. I remember seeing two of

GLR Models 3D Printed PKP Px48 build. Part 2

Evening.   Well the GLR Px48 kits arrived from Shapeways on Monday courtesy of UPS. I'm impressed with the kits and Richard has done a good job of capturing the shape of a Px48 well.   On examination there's a little 'stepping' from the print process on the rear of the tender but generally everything is crisp and forms a blank canvas to add the detail to. There's going to be a lot of it as well.   The kit comes as three parts with the smokebox and running plate forming one of the prints,

Trefeglwvs Road Cambrian Railways 22

Hi   Since the last blog post I have made a cover to protect the scenic section, both in transit and when work is being carried out on the electrics etc. on the underside of the layout.   I have also installed a over-centre catch to keep the two half’s in position when the layout is being carried and being packed ready for transport. I have also built some stubby feet, this is to allow the layout, in operation mode to be placed on a table, say the kitchen table, which allows the layou

Additive Manufacturing 2

Hi   Recently Steam_Julie posted a blog entry where she posted photographs of the cable clamps she made, to fix the DCC power bus to the underside of her layout.   These were manufactured using additive manufacturing techniques, BUT not using a 3D printer, instead using styrene cement and strips of styrene sheet.   Lisa   Posted from andriod phone   Knob Shop blog entry http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/941/entry-12889-the-knob-shop/

N gauge and O gauge weathering

One of my colleagues bought a new Farish N Gauge 5MT at Warley Show for use on Headingley. I was asked to give it a wash over to get rid of the plastic sheen ..   an ink/water wash followed by a small amount of weathering powder and ..     Then Dave who was demonstrating next door to me asked me to give an O Gauge Parkside GW loco coal wagon a bit of a weather - complete with rust..   and the other side.. again using ink/water wash plus some rust powder and coal dust powder..

Now for the hard bit!

Thanks again to everyone for all the kind comments on the last post - I particularly liked the 'stoke of genius' bit - not often that is applied to me! But now to the hard bit - keeping up enough interest to finish this bit off before moving on to the next thing. Although structurally complete (or should that be incomplete!), there is still a lot of work to do to get it to the standard I want - some best done before it is 'planted' and some after. The rather tedious and frustrating bit now is ge

The Knob Shop

Hi   No I NOT being rude. The name comes from the fact that they started trading selling door knobs. The shop came to my attention looking for different hinges to hinge, joint between two baseboards. The Knob Shop stocks a huge range of hinges, including ones with large hinge plate dimensions. One that I looked at have a over 7" between the rows of screw holes.   They also stock a large range of door stops, window furniture, including units to hold them open.   I think that they are worth

Part 37: Miller and sons machine shop

My latest build that I made to incorporate in my new layout. A Woodland scenics machine shop that I made a diorama of. I named it Miller & sons after the great Glenn Miller. I listened to a lot of his music during the build....           I'm very satisfied with the build so far. I was honestly surprised at the value of this kit! It has a few issues though, as it is (as I have understood it) an old Alloy forms kit thar WS have re-released. The white metal is VERY hard, and

Make or Break?

After a mammoth late night session last night (I promise to go to bed earlier tonight!), the roof was finished. It needed a few bits re staining this afternoon but was soon looking like this;     And then before I could get too attached to it;       Actually it took quite a long time carefully damage it as did not want to destroy it completely and then a few dabs of glue to secure some of the flapy bits. Still much work to do in getting the weathering and the brick colour right as

New blog, Introduction

Right then. This is my first EVER blog ever, so bear with me...   It's basically on my first layout project 'Frappington'. The layout is a continuous run single track line with a passing loop in the centre of the layout in a three platform station in the centre of the layout, all housed in my loft. It's modelled in 'OO' to anything but finescale! It's set on the Eastern Region of BR in the 1950's, to the east of Doncastor on a fictitious line from Doncastor to Grimsby via Epworth. The Epworth

Point Rodding - Done!

Hello   Well, there were times when I didnt think I would ever get this far but I can gladly report Highclere has reached another 'milestone' in its construction. The point rodding is now done...         It took roughly 14ft of rodding, 30 etched cranks, 700 etched stools, and 2 years (on and off) to get this far and I am glad its now done.   Missy   Ballasting next, once Christmas and New Year are out of the way...

Berkeley castle - bringing forward to 1947

Finally Berkeley castle has been completed, The below footplate lining was scraped off with a flat knife blade, along with microsol as a softener.   Moving onto the tender, I had hoped to keep the original gw arms crest, however after removing the great western lettering I realised it was not in the right place for the new logo so that had to go as well. Again the method was gentle scraping with multiple applications of microsol.   Once complete HMRS transfers were used to rebrand the te
