Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Upper Level Baseboard Completed

The 300 inch challenge micro layout now has its top level baseboard (or benchwork for our American cousins) in place. Unfortunately this happened with only a week to go to the Bassetlaw (North Notts) Railway Society annual exhibition the layout wasn’t part of the 300 inch competition. lets hope it makes it in time for […] The post Upper Level Baseboard Completed appeared first on Rede Valley Railway.

Another Test Track!

I've just done a quick tester to see how using real wooden sleepers for the layout would look. Now, you'll have to use your imagination a bit, as the sleepers are in an unstained and unweathered state.   The wooden sleepers are from www.handlaidtrack.com, in America. They are actually a little too short in width for the era I'm modelling, but if the overall effect is better I think it's worth loosing that extra mm.   The chairs could be from either the 2mm Scale Association, or from Britis

The history

Spurred on by Flood I thought I’d start a blog on the progress of my layout – a model of Penzance based in the mid 70s. As I didn’t intend to start modelling again my approach has been ramshackle and in hindsight I can see the benefit of good planning beforehand! But I’ve been too impatient to get things running. I am newly returned to the hobby. I had a layout in the mid 80s but packed everything away when I was 18. Almost exact two years ago my parents insisted on me removing the boxes o

Just Get On With It Man!

After completing last nights post where I practically convinced myself that I wasn't going to bother with this advert business I realised that would just not do so gave myself a couple of bracing slaps and just got on with it! Didn't actually take me that long as had got further than I thought with the Dubonnet ad. This was the inspiration   I opened it in PhotoShop then transformed it to remove the perspective then on separate layers, traced the outline of the letters. I then dragged this ov

It was worth the wait - P2 arrives at last

Friend Peter has at last finished the P2 after 5 years of struggle! We decided, after his suggestion that my purchase of a kit to make 2002 in it's original form, would be best transformed into the streamlined form that it spent most of its life as a 2-8-2 in. Having made that decision, I then felt that 2001 had a better name! The front end is mostly scratch built having decided that some A4 parts weren't right the kit manufacturer offered some parts of the streamlined kit that he was develop

Grantham Coaling Plant 2mmFS - A little progress.....

Good evening,   It's been a while since I updated this blog with progress on my "little slice of Grantham shed" layout. I have been concentrating on getting the coaling tower structure nearer to being finished before starting anything else as, to be honest, I am enjoying progressing this structure as I would like it to be the main focal point of the layout.   I have added the top section to the tower, however, having studied a few more of the sublime photos on the excellent thread "returning

I haven't seen Battle: Los Angeles for a while now...

It's just finishing on Film 4 now.   But that's not important...   What is is the progress on my Sulphate train.   The Brake van is almost complete. Only the glazing and some weathering to do.       It's not turned out too bad really...   Also, I've come a long way with the sulphate wagons, where the progress so far with them all.     The decal have been added and under frame has been painted with the planking highlighted with various shades of grey and grey/brown to repre

Empire Mill - a bridge too far?

This weekend I had a good few hours to do some concentrated work on the layout. The track on the main boards is coming on well and the two points at the right hand end of the loop got finished off. There was nearly a disaster here which took a bit of working around. I had made a small mistake early on with the very first board I built. I had carefully laser cut all the pieces of framing and then assembled them and stuck them to the bottom of the baseboard. Unfortunately I put one piece on the wr

VGA vans Part 2

A couple of shots of progress on the repainting of the VGA. the one i'm working on is in the middle on these photos. it still needs electric warning flashes and the TOPS data panels were painted over so I need to replace those. once the transfers are on it will be weathered. the Railmatch paint is not the same as the Bachmann factory finish, but after it has been made grimey it shouldn't be too noticable. need to find the time to finish it now.

Home-made Lining & Lettering - 2a

As a result of comments on earlier posts, I have added this supplement, to describe some variations in lining styles. The GWR used many different styles of lining at different periods, as I was reminded by 'N15class'. Many of these can be reproduced by slight variations of the methods I described in earlier posts.   Before 1881, however, the GWR sometimes used a technique called 'scarfed' lining, which is a variation on 'dropped shadows'. In the period 1864 - 1881, the lining comprised a 1” wi

More Poster Inspiration

Still on a bit of a go slow on the building but how about this for some inspiration ;     There isn't a huge amount of information about it but it is pre WW1 Paris. The colours are far too bright to be one of the early autochrome colour pics so guess it must be hand tinted so colour accuracy can't be guaranteed but all I can say is that if one of my buildings were to turn out looking like that I would not be at all displeased!   I found this while trying to find a copy of the Fer-Kina ad

A Little Weekend Job

Hello   Squeezed between spells of Christmas Shopping this weekend I managed to finish off another one of those 'little jobs' which has been on my mind for a bit now. It started off like this...     And then turned into this...     And after this weekend it finished off looking like this...     As per usual, my stuff looks terrible when you look at it nice and close with a photo, but at normal distances it looks alright!   Missy

Home-made Lining & Lettering - 2

In the first post in this series, I covered the basics of setting up Photoshop Elements (PSE) and a printer, to make water-slide transfers on ink-jet printable paper.   My first topic was 'Boiler Bands', which are made up from simple straight lines. Now it is necessary to consider the more general subject of lined panels, which raises the new problem of dealing with corners.   My 'cheat' way of making sure that the lining will be a good fit to the model is to scan the model itself. I lay the

Kings Cross

The layout was started about 25 years ago and consisted of just the station, after this nothing was done on it until about 6-7 years ago when the outer base bords were constructed to form a loop wright round the loft. From this a considerable amount of effort was made to complete the outer tracks and add senery and details.   you can see videos from the link below how far the layout has come sinse 2008.

All that glitters is.....Brass! GLR Models PKP Px48 build continued.

Work has continued on the GLR Models 3D printed PKP Px48 kits today.   As I've mentioned previously these 3D printed kits are like a blank canvas and offer many variations in the level of detail you want to add. In this case and as with many Continental locos it's going to be pipeworktastic but for the time being I thought I'd concentrate on getting the main work done on the body prior to adding handrails and pipework.   As with any 3D printed kit there are limitations to the level of detail

Bristol Barrow Road Roundhouse - Third Roof Pitch

Having got past the summer break and all the house and garden work I have spent the past few weeks working on the third and final roof pitch for the Roundhouse. This required a modification to the assembly jig as this roof pitch is sectioned to permit viewing of the inside of the shed. This morning this pitch was test fitted and a few photos taken.....................             Next task - to make a jig for the Workshop roof trusses.   Edit Monday 9th.   The jig and the f

Dean Goods part 6 Dean Done!

Well it's taken a while, but my Dean Goods project is finally completed. I'm lucky enough to have access to micro-abraisive blasting equipment, so before painting could commence the model was subjected to air abraision. Fifty micron Aluminum Oxide particles were used at 3 bar pressure to clean the surface of the brass. This process ensured that the paint would have a clean matt surface to adhere onto. I like to use an acid etch primer on brass kits, but don't like the idea of spraying an etchant

Trefeglwvs Road Cambrian Railways 23

Hi   Since the last posting I’ve been working on both scenery and other areas connected with making the layout easier to store and move around.   I've added a handle on the fold side of the layout, when folded up for storage to make it easier to lift and carry it. It's surprising difficult to grab hold of a circular layout.   I have also added rubber feet onto the fiddleyard area, to allow the layout to be placed on a table top without damaging either the layout or the table top.

Fish Engine... attempt 3...

Sometimes things don't quite go to plan.   In this instance, the plan was to use a pair of 2P bodies to build a B5 'Fish' engine. Last time, I had gotten as far as hacking one body up and splicing in a length of boiler from the second, and beginning to look at welding the new boiler onto a running plate from a Patriot.   Unfortunately what then happened was that it all went wrong. The new boiler was from plastic so thick that it didn't sit at proper height, and then the new running plate

The Fer-Kina Mystery

I am afraid not much has happened in the last few days in a material sense but lots of research and musings have. Now one of these (and this is a thinly disguised appeal for help!) concerns an advert in a picture for a product called Fer-Kina. As is so often the case, the answer to at least some of my inspiration problems lay rather closer to hand than I expected. As part of my continual, and usually failing, battle to keep the place tidy I decided I had to make some space on the book shelf in t
