Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Brighton 75A: Today's post 131229: Assembling the first baseboards-2

We left yesterday's blog with the first of the side members clamped to the inverted baseboard for the PVA glue to stick. This was the inner of two pieces that together make up the 12mm thickness of the side pieces. I believe that Chris laminates the two pieces together first, makes up a carcase and then offers up the baseboard top. I decided that because the boards were to be irregular with a number of them having curved edges that I would stick one side member to the baseboard top, let it set f

Order of parts...

For Christmas I revived this Wills Kit from my Uncle... It is from a man (Who has passed on..) that modelled the 3mm "S" scale, but also the 4mm SR scene. (I have also been given some of his other SR stock) This being one of the kits he never finished... With the parts available this will be a challenge, as the only usable parts are the body, front footplate, smoke deflectors, tender body, Tender handbrake , and vac.pipe.. So this will kick start my latest project... Enjoy

Trying Redutex textures.....

I'd seen various articles and mentions on here about the Redutex self adhesive textures and thought they might be worth a play with to see what they were like, each to their own but I just can't get on with brickpapers so I thought these might be a bit of a half way house having the relief of plastic/plasticard and the self coloured nature of printed papers.   So a sample was ordered from modeltextures.co.uk (usual disclaimer) I went for the Flemish bond brick with dark mortar in the coloured

Weston 2014 is go!

The school holidays may be half over and the Christmas festivities may now be over, but with the New Year around the corner I can now confirm that there WILL be a Weston-on-Trent Model Railway exhibition in 2014.   Actually the decision was an easy one. With almost £1000 raised for school funds and plenty of positive comments received, the headteacher seemed to nervously ask me if I would be prepared to run another event. Answer..of course I would.   The date is Saturday 15th November.

Leaping 0.63mm from EM to P4

Hello everyone. I'm Mehmood, I've modelled LMS pre-group constituents in EM sporadically going back over forty years, but recently gauge-widened my mindset by 0.63mm to P4 following the acquisition of the recently late Joe Worrall's boards and trackwork of St Albans Abbey, all 26 feet of it. I was also able to acquire some of his rolling stock before he passed away.   Since then I've been variously renovating parts of the boards, researching the gaps to fill, and reviewing my existing EM to mo

Trefeglwvs Road - Getting Control

Hi This project is intended to enable the control of 2 points using solenoid point motors and another accessory using a standard Hornby 3 function DCC loco decoder.   The main layout controller for the layout is a Bachmann Easy Controller.   To achieve the above functionality, I have decided to use address 9. A standard loco decoder is programmed to address 9. This has 3 function outputs F0, F1 and F2. These are standard digital 0 – 5v with a driving capacity of 20 mA, either ON or OFF.

Sheffield Supertram CAD update.

More work on the Supertram project, roof detail now done, some of this is a bit OTT and probably won't print, but I want to see what we can actually get away with before deleting anything.   Anyway pics               Couple of minor mods to do to the body and that'll be then done, running gear for chassis and fitment pretty much sorted using Halling bogie that'll clip in, so coming together nicely, Vinyl graphics are pretty much likely too.

My Big Building!

Thanks for all the amusing comments on the last post and am glad so many people enjoyed my Christmas dinner! Now, back to more ordinary stuff (beans on toast!), or my second building which has now become my BIG BUILDING!. I guess it was the same size when I started it but with the addition of end walls and the garden it has got an awful lot chunkier and pretty impressive really.       Here is one of the balcony of which I am really pleased. I just drew out an idea on a piece of card, stu

Brighton 75A: Today's post 131227: Assembling the first baseboards

This is how I launched into the making of the first baseboard(s). The first stage was to load the Templot templates on to an 8x4 sheet of 6mm ply for a repeat of a previously abortive effort. This time I followed Martin's advice and printed the templates on 160gsm card on an inkjet (i.e. not laser) printer. I used 3M spray mount to fix the templates to the board. The spray mount allows repositioning and does not distort the templates. Once laid out properly (and it is amazing that, no matter

Whiskey boxes

For the interior of the warehouse I wanted some (whiskey) barrels and crates. Basic information I found on the very useful http://www.igg.org.uk/gansg/00-app1/common.htm   After reading this basic information my research on the internet began.     Then I discoverd that whiskey also was shippen in whiskey boxes. Mostly with the name of the distelery on top of it.     With the pictures I found there were also sizes metioned. 17 x 14¾ x8½ inch is in 4mm : 5,6 x 4,9 x 2,8 mm. 22½ x 15

What to do with a Dapol B1

Hi all, I hope that everyone had a good Christmas!   Just before Christmas UPS delivered my latest consignment from Shapeways, five locomotive bodies. Only one of these was a Christmas present and from me not to me!   For the moment, I'll be concentrating on two of these as two of the others need suitable donor chassis to be identified and my new N2 is identical to the one covered previously.   I've collected several Dapol B1 locos and while these are out of period from my own layout, they

Brighton 75A: Today's post 131226: Report on last few months progress

Here we are again after a few months away from the blogsphere! I've not been idle meanwhile and this is a report on latest developments. The track plan is now finished as far as the end of Phase 1 (the loco shed and platforms 1 - 3 as a fiddle yard) but not without the excellent help received from Martin Wynne, Templot creator. I struggled for a week or so to create a pair of curved tandem (3 way) turnouts and eventually had to turn to Martin for help. The result is on the Templot forum and now

Merry Christmas to one and all plus forward progress!

Hi all,     It's been an age since I posted anything and that is somewhat lazy on my part! I think by the time I keep up with my clubs requirements and the house/maintenance chores!! coupled with my own layout which I have started on again after some absence, there is not much time left!   Club wise, we have had a good year traveled/exhibited to a number of model rail club shows here in Ireland and been asked to exhibit at agricultural shows and Diorama diecast shows as well!   We are no

Bracket finished

So at last I have finished the first bracket signal and added the servos.             Remember to take labels off the servos before using the tape. I have staggered the servos to allow non conflicting movement.   I use "No more nails" tape. It's the only one I have found that sticks we'll enough.   The signal is super glued to the MDF.   As mentioned in a previous entry, the servo (in this case servos) goes through a 40mm hole in the baseboard and the rectangle base is flu

A quickie project - Hornby class 60 chassis in Hornby class 92 - 2

I have made good progress on this project.   I wired the chassis back up, initially for a quick test on DC power, which involved tack soldering the feed wires to the brush wires. It ran perfectly, so the next step was to wire in a decoder. I chose a TCS M4 that I happened to have lying around. While I am only using two functions at the moment (for the headlights), it leaves the way open to improving the lighting later with separately worked tail lights or cab lights, if I so choose. One correc

A quickie project - Hornby class 60 chassis in Hornby class 92 - 1

As a quickie project, I bought a Hornby class 60 on eBay for a quite reasonable sum with the intention of updating the old class 92. I made a previous attempt to improve it with a 5-pole armature and DCC decoder but it still didn't run as well as I would really like. In some ways it is almost a shame to lose the EWS 60 as the only fault with it was the windscreens were broken (easily replaced if I wanted to).   The real class 92s used a very similar body shell to the 60s and after examining th

Todays Project

Today I have been working on quite a big thing that has taken several weeks of planning and many shopping trips (luckily not undertaken by me!), to present to visitors.   Some of the stock was RTR But most was scratch built. There were some instructions but in the best of traditions these were completely ignored until the point things were going wrong and was too late anyway!   Care had to be taken as there were some very nasty and toxic components to deal with   There was also a micro l

Sulphate train complete

Merry Christmas folks.   Just an update to show my new complete sulphate train.   I honestly don't know how accurate it is so I suspect it's not that accurate but reference pictures were a nightmare to find... or non-existent. So I did my best anyway.         Nothing is perfectly but for the moment, I'm happy with the outcome.   For a more indepth look, along with extra added frustrations on life... please follow the link http://sylviantennant.blogspot.co.uk/
