Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Kato layout finished

Hello all,   Finally finished the Kato test track / layout. I've done odd jobs to it over the last couple of months but just never seem to get anywhere fast so for the last few days i concentrated on getting it completed, There is one remaining job which is to connect up a final point motor but i'm waiting on a new lead arriving, once thats done i shall put it in the classifieds here and hopefully it will get a new home.   Few pics of the finished layout.           Cheers

Moving Pictures

It's been a while since we have heard from the Farthing Station Weekly Discussion Club. Fortunately, the Club continues to meet on a weekly basis to discuss worldly matters.   Recent debates have included the Zulu rebellion, the eruption of Vesuvius, Einstein's theory of relativity, the California earthquakes, the invention of flight, Gandhi's philosophy, the discovery of the South Pole, and the scandalous defeat to South Africa by one wicket.   As always, proceedings are hea

A Grand Day Out - part 2 - Guess where?

This could start to get a bit repetitive but I was in St Albans as well! This show has become a bit of a tradition now and an excuse to come over to one of my old stamping grounds, meet friends, drink wine and eat lots! Am sure there is looking at trains in there somewhere as well! Unfortunately due to our rather complex travel arrangements this weekend, we did not have as long as I would have liked at the show as had to get several full sized trains back to Worcestershire. A really nice show ag

Spencer Taking Shape, sort of...

Right then, so going from where i left it last time with the valve gear mounted the next step was to get the wheels & cogs back in and get the whole thing running smoothly. Easier said than done, it took best part of an evenings work to get the wheels lined up to get the coupleing rods on and the chassis running smoothly, the problem was getting the wheels at such an angle that when they were dropped into the axle slots that the they would revolve around the idler gears so the the crank pins

St Albans 2014

Well, 2014 seems to have arrived and after the usual last minute flurry of activity to get things finished, so did this weekend's St Albans show.   It was great to see some of our existing friends and to make some new ones. I think that all of the team had a good time although you might have got a different answer if you had asked those of us on our backs mending the point motor at the goods yard throat during the Saturday morning session.   The Sea Siding crossover also decided to develop a

Pleased to report that layout and operators generally behaved themselves. A couple of minor gremlins but nothing I'm worried about. Thanks to all who came and said hi. We had some very nice comments. Next outing will be Expo EM in May.

Eventful weekend to St Albans show and Bath

Had a bit of a busy weekend. Off on Saturday early to set up my art stand at the excellent St Albans Show. and took 2001 to visit and thanks to Terry Yeend for allowing it to pose on Lough Engine shed - duly envious of this layout!   As often seems to happen with me, I got double booked with a late wedding announcement and couldn't miss an old friends daughter getting Wed in the Roman Baths at Bath! Very enjoyable evening ! then back on the road before dawn to get back to St Albans Show!

Falling Behind: A Leader Story (Pt2)

We now return to the development of my Golden Arrow resin and white metal kit of the pioneering Bulleid Leader (click here for part 1).   Leader’s bogies are gigantic, just massive. Leader looks like the monster truck of UK locomotives. These bogies are cast in white metal and have a very nice finish. They are also nice and weighty. While reading how to install the recommended DS10 motor I mis-interpreted the instructions and installed a separate DS10 motor into each bogie. In hindsight this w

Northall – Whisky boxes 2

Against the wall in the back of the warehouse are some empty piled up whisky.   The base for this boxes were some pictures from Flickr. I find that a beautiful resource for all kind of pictures.     With this pictures I made a pdf with the piled up boxes in 4 mm scale.     Untill now just the useall way of how I approach things. But the backside of the boxes won’t be visible when you look through the door of the warehouse. So I didn't found in necessary to model them with full detai

St Albans 2014

Hello   Im sitting here at my desk about this years St Albans show and how I had a really good time once again. This was my 5th year at the show and I still very much enjoy it. OK, so the venue may not the the best ever but to me the show has a quality and atmosphere about it that very few other shows seem to have. Once again it was a pleasure to be in the position to talk to lots of like minded people, many from RMWeb land about modelling tricks and techniques and it was an honour to be able

Point Construction Completed

I'm relieved to say that I've finally finished building the pointwork for my branchline terminus. The points were built using parts from C & L components. Although I've hand filed rail section to make Crossing Vees' and Point Blades in the past, I decided on this occasion to splash out and buy pre-made items. The points are built to 31.5mm gauge, using roller jigs supplied by RMweb member "Debs." I think the finer flangeways created by using this 0.5mm narrower gauge result in better looking

Nem pockets.

I've just finished a few wagon kits and rather than use the old Hornby oversize couplings, thought about these Nem pockets. As I have not seen them or used them before, would I be right to assume that I glue the pocket on the wagon frames, then use the coupling suitable and that is it? I prefer the smaller coupling ,as it is more suited for shunting, and is not so chunky looking. The Ideal way to go would be drop link couplings ,but too fiddly for shunting. Any help or information welcomed.

Couplings and another 'Grand Day Out'!

I realise that I am now opening myself for getting told off again for staying up too late by logging at this time but seem to have just lost a couple of hours in a Dr Who type time vortex while researching my next little plan. Anyway....   Here at last is a Simplex with couplings, couplings which will have to be taken off again while I spray it - why do I bother!     Tomorrow should see it sprayed but have to admit to there still being no pick ups so hasn't actually run yet.   Now, just

Pre-construction details

The track plan is probably more Kingswear than Penzance but is really neither although the name clearly references both. I have a love of Devon & Cornwall in preference to South and West Wales so didn't research anything involving the Severn Tunnel in its connection to Headquarters. I did originally intend a river under the station approach (Kingswear has this and Penzance has one a little further up the line) but I have to start the gradient where the up and down main tracks on the plan dis

Empire Mill - continuous run completed!

Progress since Christmas has been good with the final section of track laying over the bridge completed allowing trains to once more go all around the room. The vertical fiddle yard is still functioning having been dismantled off the wall and then 're-hung' and the old portable sections over the door and the 'crew lounge' (spare bed!) could be re-used with only minor adaption to fit the new position of the rails coming off the main scenic section.   A view from the door gives a reasonable impr

Grantham Coaling Plant 2mmFS - Handrail hell or handrail heaven?!?

Good afternoon all,   First update on this project for 2014! Quite a few small bits have been going on and the model is starting to come together now.   First of all, I decided to make a start on building the handrails. Whilst there is no etched kit available in this scale to model handrail I set about making my own as it looked like they would all be different sizes anyway. Various techniques were tried and tested for making these. First of all, I blue tacked the parts to a pre drawn handra

More Clerestories

Work on the next pair of ex-GCR clerestories continues apace.   Starting with the basic Hornby bodies, the first step was to dismantle the carriages. There is a screw through the carriage which when removed loosens the roof, and it is then possible to gently prise it free from the body. You can then access the interior of the body and using pliers or tweezers gently squeeze the lugs holding the bogies in to release those. The buffers can be gently pulled loose just with the fngers- no need

Wagon Loads Part 3 - Lowmacs and Containers

Looking back through my blog entries I realise there’s quite a lot involving wagons. I like wagons. In recent years there have been quite a few nice rtr wagons. I’ve had a few , and no doubt will get some more. However, converting or improving an older model, or building a kit allows me to put something of myself into a wagon model. Plastic kits are inexpensive, and a number of my models use older models, many of which can be obtained second hand for a modest price. They don’t even ha

The next decisions

The decision on the layout's historical placement had to allow me to justify some of the locos I really wanted, some of which are already owned and painted in post-27 GWR green.. I wanted to be able to run Churchward's Stars (x1) and Saints (x2) and perhaps a heavy freight 28xx together with Collett's Castles (x2) and Halls (original, x2). At a more local level, some prairies, a Collett 2251 or two and at least one pannier. That pretty well set the period as somewhere around 1929 - 1932. I feel

Instant Chocolate (with Cream)

Following my initial trials with the Silhouette Portrait (described in previous blog posts), I began to think about pre-printing the sides, so that no painting would be needed at all! The Silhouette machines have the important provision to align the cutter with a printed image, which makes this possible.   Just after I had been exploring this, JCL posted another excellent tutorial in the Silhouette Forum at http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/79025-a-guide-to-using-the-silhouette

Engine Wood - put up for testing this morning

I put 'Engine Wood' up for testing this morning (it is normally packed away at home), to ensure that all was well for a forthcoming session. The testing regime normally consists of running a loco up and down all roads, in all configurations, ensuring that the signals work etc.   This time, apart from my usual pannier test loco, I deployed 82044 on the layout for the first time. This loco, which is a combination of Bachmann body and modified Comet chassis, featured in some of my earlier blogs
