Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Not sitting on the fence.

Have now given up sitting on the fence (too painful!), and am getting on with the railings for the big building which has been on hold since Christmas. Yes, that does mean that the Simplex is on hold in a semi working state but think I need a bit of a change. I am working from a couple of original pictures for this building so have a general look for the railings but do not feel obliged to copy them completely, which would be pretty difficult anyway from a couple of grainy pics. So to get someth

Who's the new guy sat with the Finching sisters ?

I recently stumbled across an unused figure of mine that was stored away in a parts box that we all have somewhere.   I'm pretty sure he came from Aidan's range http://www.aidan-campbell.co.uk/76catalogue.htm#Mid%2020th%20century%20Civilians number 008   He's sitting here with his new best friends but needs a name. Can anyone help.I might suggest he's not short of a bob or two as he seems to be reading one of the broadsheet newspapers of the day.

Grantham Coaling Plant 2mmFS - Baseboards and trackplan laying

Good afternoon!   Here is my latest entry with progress on "a little slice of Grantham shed" project.   I have finally put the baseboard together and fixed down the layout plan using Templot. As I'm still not great with Templot, I created the different turnouts and straight sections individually, printed them out and once the board was marked out, the pieces were stuck together like a jigsaw puzzle.   So here is the first photo, the whole layout is 120cm long by 22cm wide. The area to the

T9.5 - body and chassis united

It's been quite a successful week all in all. The Weston show went well and I've made steady progress with the T9. The body has been united with the chassis for the first time. A tiny amount of fettling was required but all fitted where it was supposed to. The frames sit inside the cab and have to fit on the inside of the splashers which are obviously between the frames and the wheels. I must admit to slight trepidation when I looked at some of the clearances involved but it all fits and credit

Aire Valley Railway

Hi. Bit of an odd ball posting this time, when are they not? The first three photos go back a considerable period of time. The first one is the cover of the first dedicated railway book I bought. Railways had featured in other books such as the Odhams Press publication How it Works and how it's Done. . but this was my first real railway book. As may be seen from the cover it is the script of a B.B.C. broadcast. On the title page it quotes, A dramatisation of events that occurred at a vital

Grime Street Board iii)

After much messing with boards, plaster, rail, pcb, magnorail tracks and Faller guide wires the whole lot is now up and working.....   There's the 2 tram lines, 2 Faller guide wires and the Magnorail cyclist in about 5 inches.   Pavements and road surfaces are all done and now just the setts to scribe.   A good number of the buildings are well underway so hopefully it's well on track for it's first exhibition target.   Quick video of the cyclist in action passing Leeds 600

Ropley - No bears were harmed in the making of..

A green and pleasant land.   Greetings all, Happy new year!   Well progress on Ropley rumbles on at glacial speed, but there has been some in recent weeks.   For a while now I've been looking at methods for recreating the overgrown grass on the embankment along the rear of the main running line and station. This varies from quite dense overgrowth to very thin cover where the platform extension was built several years ago. My original plan was to use static grass, but having produced a

Bristol Barrow Road - The Workshop Roof Ventilation

The Midland roundhouse roof has slatted ventilation louvres along the full length, on both sides, of each of the three roof pitches and although a number were missing during the 50/60's they still pose challenge to accurately model them.   As a trial I decided to try and model the rectangular roof ventilator situated over the machine shop in the Workshop building. I decided to use 2mm x 1.5mm 'T' section brass in which I cut 8 x 45deg slots using a piercing saw. 16 of these were made, three

Easitrack or Finetrax? A decision has to be made...

I have come to a crossroads regarding where I take this layout and one important thing that needs to be considered is cost.   One thing that bugs me about standard N gauge is the PECO track. For me, it is crude and the sleeper spacing is wrong - for others it might be OK. There are now 2 finescale versions on the market - the 2mm Scale Easitrack and the new N gauge Finetrax system. As I want to go down the 2mm scale route I need to consider the cost of re-wheeling my stock.   For the Easitra

Getting somewhere!

Thanks for all the suggestions regarding springs and things (and sorry, I the depths of my despair I didn't manage to take any pics of the chassis!), but have got somewhere. In fact I haven't really gone anywhere but the little Simplex has gone around my loop of Hornby set track on the living room floor (in true train set style!), completely unaided and with three hefty white metal D class wagons. I persevered with the pick ups and the real break through came when I had the brainwave of bending

Shadow Box Roundhouse - Lighting more or less there!

The 3mm leds arrived today from Express Models. Really are superb quality lights - relatively cheap and very easy to use. Their service really is an express one and these have again, like all my other orders, arrived very timely indeed. I've stuck a couple in the ends of short pieces of plastic straw and used them as directional lighting (tiny spots) to highlight the front of the 9F. A couple have also been stuck down a couple of the smoke hoods to simulate the sunlight coming down them as i

A small corner of a field...

Quick job tonight, added some thin card to the front edge to neaten it up, then a good going over the walls with my "dirty wash" to tone down the paint and to highlight the crevices etc.     Final task was to pva some hanging basket liner shiny side up

Ballasting Begins...

Ballasting has begun! In the end I opted for the Chinchilla Dust rather than using sand. The picture shows it in it's un-weathered state. Once all the ballast is down it will be weathered using some light paint washes to tone down the light grey colour. The ballast was glued down using the traditional method of using watered down PVA to soak the loose ballast in situ.   The reason why the Chinchilla Dust won over the sand is that is just looks better from a distance. Although sand looks great

Nothing to See Here

Previously there was a 'workshop'...     and then there was none...       Don't worry: most of it ended up here just before Christmas.     What didn't is in the garage. Once it's unpacked and sorted out I'll be back to it. I'm keen to do so but other areas of the house have taken priority. Fortunately there are no big jobs to undertake so it should be soon. The first decision will be which project to take out of the box first.   There is a clue to a future short, (I hope),

Clay and plaster

I thought I'd better get something done ahead of the Mansfield Show ( http://www.mansfieldmodelrailway.co.uk ) so last night I made up the triangular piece that fits in the two main boards at the front, covering the cut-aways needed to allow for the curved backscene corners when the layout is packed away. Some Ten Commandments walling mitre bonded to a card and polystyrene base with an initial covering of concrete coloured emulsion.     I've ordered some sheep to place in this little corner

Dejection.

I think the body language of the driver says it all;     You see, he has a brand new and rather smart looking Simplex;     But guess what? It doesn't work!   The problem is solely down to the pick ups, I just can't seem to get them right. Have been messing around with this for two days now and really have had enough. the recommended position is to have them on the inside of the frames working on the backs of the wheels. I have tried the Phospher bronze strip supplied, heftier P.B. ,

First Post: The Track Plan

This plan shows how the layout will fit together. Each section (or module) is 600 x 175mm and can join together in any configuration. The layout, as shown above, is in it's simplest form (as well as the shortest!). This configuration joins together all of the "custom" modules, plus a "standard" module.   The standard module is just simply pier and straight track, and these standard modules can be used to build up the layout to the full scale length, or any length in-between.   The custom mod

Bratchell NSE class 455/8 - finishing touches

Quite a while ago, I started building a Bratchell Models class 455/8 unit - the first batch with the really ugly front end! Most of the build has been covered in my layout thread in the main forums but it really belongs here on the workbench blog. The unit has actually been running on the layout for some time.   I started the handrails on the leading DTS car using handrail knobs but this looked much too coarse when compared to photos of the real things. On the trailing DTS, I used shaped wire

A Profitable Christmas

Over Christmas my brother and I have recieved and bought quite a number of new things. First up is the Prodigy Advance^2, so we now have something to drive the trains with. I got the new Hornby Star class, 4018 'Knight of the Grand Cross' and 5 Hawksworth coaches (post war, I know). My brother recieved a selection of goods stock, an autocoach and a Hornby Pannier. The really good news is that we still have more to spend! Here are some photos:

Back on the rails

After some years of inactivity after having made an attempt ad a trainset-on-a-plank style layout, I have decided to start modelling again.   The long term goal is a BLT set in an alternative version of the the Forest of Dean in which the tramways have been modernized in to a steam hauled narrow gauge network. The initial planning was discussed here:   http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/43485-gwr-forest-of-dean-and-narrow-gauge-oo-layout-planning/   As I have a degree and o

Rehousing and wiring

So safely back from the high seas I moved house (and so moved Buckden). My new train room is going to be a great home for the layout, but has meant there needs to be some reconfiguring. It'll return to continuous run but for now it's set up with a fiddle yard at the one end and nothing at the other. As this means it's now a shunting layout I decided to finally wire up the points. I'd installed SEEP motors under the boards for the four points on the scenic boards ages ago but hadn't got around to
