Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Odd Job Man.

Another figure to be found in the village is this guy.Another unnamed casting from Dart MSV5 which they call a railway worker but I've made him into a painter and decorator for this scene.I've used Hornby's Skaledale's terraced houses and here's a garage behind him.Repainted to give some individuality to the products. The pavement is from Metcalfe card kits.

Revisiting the Dick Kerr

Having temporarily put the big building on the layout for some pictures I found that I couldn't summon up the energy or will to rescue it from the rather cold studio last night so looked around for something to finish off. I considered one of the Wrightlines Baldwins but settled on the Dick Kerr petrol electric that I had started a few months ago. Just to recap, I had soldered up the body and had cut some chassis frames but got no further. I turned my attention to the frames and finished them o

V5 Full Brake

The parts I need to complete building my 6-wheel coaches have not yet arrived so, in the meantime, here's one that I made earlier!   I've mentioned before that one of the factors that triggered me into thinking in terms of a 19th century layout was that I'd already built the three types of 'Ratio' GWR 4-wheel coaches. I then came across a photo, taken in 1911, of a short train behind a 'Stella'-class locomotive at Leamington station (see http://www.warwickshirerailways.com/gwr/gwrls826.htm ) T

More on the clerestories- half way there!

Well, halfway to completing my planned rake, at any rate.   The all-third is finished....     And the all-first now isn't too far behind...     A little more work on the interior and then I can start on the roof.   I've also made a couple of decisions about when it comes to the brake thirds. One of them I think I will keep in the Hornby 'as manufactured' configuration of a long(ish) guards compartment, side duckets and 5 third class compartments. However, the other I think will

A very long over due update....

Well it's finally time for an update, well it has been over 6 months lol   I've been so busy with Loco's going across my workbench that it's been difficult to keep track.   As it stands today the tally for West Country's/Battle of Britain's stands at 105 of the 110 strong class covered by me... so far. With 3 more donor's awaiting their turn on the workbench - 34086 219 Squadron (Last Air smoothed), 34032 Camelford (1st Sound Fitted and penultimate 4,500gl tender Rebuilt) and 1 other which

EM gauge for the first time.

Having a stab at EM 18.2mm. Ive converted a Bachmann OBA. With those awful bogie/single axle arrangements. Chopped off the centre, glued the axle boxes below the leaf springs and added the wheels once they were pulled out, using a pair of pliers. As shown below...         Once the glue had dried, they can be tested.   Also, this process lowers the 'ride height' as they are a little high. Whilst the wheels are removed they can be weathered.   Jack

Oooops, I did it again...

Hello   Recently I have been building a couple of chassis for my two PECO collet bodies which have been hiding in my cupboard for a while now. As the 22xx engines were very common on the DNSR it seemed sensible to have at least a couple of them on Highclere. I started by drawing up a chassis in Autocad and producing a chassis from 0.5mm thick PCB to suit. The aim of the chassis was to go 'back to basics' and produce a couple of no frills chassis.     This where the problems started.

For Once It's Not Always About The Finching Sisters !

Modellers today are spoiled for choice with various buildings either rtp like Skaledale or card kits from several suppliers.Another cottage supplier are Townstreet. Here I've used their corner shop on the end of a row of terrace houses. The kit is plaster castings that glue together using pva .The fun bit is the painting where one can really go to town.I've fitted an interior using castings from Langley models grocers shop. The window castings come with the kit.Tiny Signs adverts adorn the outside.

Soldering Iron Tip!

This may be of interest. I have made quite a few references to the Maplin variable power soldering iron in posts and comments but have just noticed that it has got even cheaper;   http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/50-w-solder-station-n78ar     I will freely admit that it is not the best iron in the world but for £10.99 it has to be useful especially to someone who just wants to try one, possibly for soldering white metal for the first time. Do keep the receipt though as they do tend to go wrong.

Aire Valley Railway

Hi All. I am posting pics out of the book Junction X. All I can say is they seem to be a bit of an odd ball mix. Some I would think are pre war photos. Others early to mid war with some of the captions written to suit the time of the broadcast of the drama I will leave you to make your own minds up. Regards Derek

Non-update of blog!

Hi, I notice that people have been visiting this blog on and off; perhaps I should point out that I abandoned the blog (not the layout!) as I prefer the 'Layout Topic' format. For those still interested the topic can be found here...   http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/5810-inglenooking-now-known-as-bute-street-goods/?hl=%20bute%20%20street%20%20goods   ...which itself has not been updated that recently, largely due to an 'annus horribilis' last year. I aim to make an updat

Gwr 'Mermaid'

First of all I know the mermaid code is a BR creation, but given the GW didn't even allocate a diagram to these wagons it's a bit tough to know what else to call it   As per the thread in help I have been converting the Cambrian mermaid kit into the gwr version,   Work has involved New buffers Single side Morton breaks Removal of vac mount New break leavers (once I find something suitable)   I am unclear as to whether there are any body details which are different between the origina

Am I searching for the impossible?

With the month of January, and with it the new year, now in full swing my mind has turned towards my possible modelling projects for 2014. Due to the house moves planned for this year, developments on both my layouts are on hold until next month at least. In the short term I have thought about embarking on one small project which I have had at the "back of mind" for some time. I have a Skaledale model of a terraced shop, which bares a little resemblance to Arkwright's store from the famous BBC

Model Rail Scotland 2014

Model Rail Scotland is please to present the annual Scottish Gathering of Model railway enthusiasts for another prestigious event held at the SECC in Glasgow. Dates this year are Friday 21st Feb – Sun 23rd Feb 2014.   With around 30 clubs members of AMRSS is the only show in the UK where such a large group of member groups pull together to produce a Model Railway show. More on the big buiding

Have been chipping away (literally!), at the big building. One side of the railings are finished, although not permanently fixed or painting completed yet. Will have to do a couple of bits for the other side and, rather frustratingly, the missing bits as am assuming they wouldn't have gone far so will have to contribute to the heap of junk and rubble that will occupy the front garden.     There is now some basic dirt and remains of flower beds in the front and a couple of detail bits such a

Dad's trains

Hi all   Not sure if I am doing this correctly, so please guide me.   I did a little research and it brought me to this site. My father passed away and was a huge steam engine (mainly South African) enthusiast and the plan was to send his retired life building models. Sadly cancer got the better of him.   We did have time to go through some items, so some I know are extremely valuable.   My question is where do I begin? Are the model railways specialists out there that can come give a

Bring The Family!

Since my last blog post, I've been spending a lot of time familiarising myself with the Silhouette cutter. I think one of its best features is the 'print and cut' facility, which means that you can print an image, with filled colour and details, to your regular home printer and then feed the printed sheet into the Silhouette, to cut out around the printed image.   I have been experimenting with different materials, including card, HP Photo Paper, and styrene sheet. As described in posts in the

Drive Motor and Sheave

Under the platform at the top station is a Sheave, which is based on colliery design. I contacted Hornby Customer Services, to ask what was the diameter of the Sheave in their Colliery Headgear model and if it was available as a spare. They just directed me to their spares dealers, who had no stock and could not help. A plea in the Help and Tips forum drew a response from Arthur (Thanks again!) who had acquired 3D printed Sheaves (57mm dia?) from Shapeways via Ebay, He tried to get his supplie

Crawley Yard - January Update

Had a productive Christmas on the modelling front and a busy start to the year with an early club Saturday running which provided the impetus to get some work done and get the module test passed. That was successful so I am now officially allowed to exhibit with the first date penciled in for the Bluebell railway show in June.   The main improvement is the ballasting on the main line, this vastly improves the look and moves the layout on from a work in progress to super detailing. I've adde

DAS is done!

Finally the hardstanding area is complete, painted and the goods shed stuck down, that's one big storage box in the recycling bin.     Note how the right hand track is not straight through the turnout - I guess this should be classed as a wye - THE advantage of Templot and home made pointwork       I've also edged the raised polystyrene landforms with thin card (cornflakes packet) and painted them a nice earthy brown. Some sheep have been bought and are in the process of being pai

The 'Halt in the Corner' – or an excuse for some pictures of the new Dukedog from Bachmann

Continuing my journey around the layout I thought it time to return to the Branch Junction and catch the ex GWR branch train.   Bachmann Dukedog ready and waiting   The next station down the old GWR branchline is the ‘Halt in the Corner’ or more simply the ‘Passing Loop’. The Halt in the Corner   Neither the station nor the passing loop featured in my original plans. Trains leaving the Branch Junction for the Main Terminus via the old GWR line (literally the Great Way Round) followed

Northall – A paint job by Job

This I had to do in the beginnig. Painting the APA box. I found this weekend finaly some time to finish the painting I started a couple of weeks ago.   Now I had to take all of my models out of the box ant store them on the shelf.   The black shadow is a roll of painting tape.   This kind of paint jobs I don’t like because of my MCSD. I always get somekind of reaction. But on the website of Allergy UK I found some usefull tips. Now I put a cut union in the room when I have finished paint

OK here we go. This will be a part build Comet GWR C54. (Comet Code W6) see the lovely product below:   By part build in this case it means: prep/mark up/drill holes in the etches; fit 48 hinges; construct the body shell; construct the under-frame and prep /add the foot-boards and sprung buffers' stocks (MJT buffers supplied by new owner); cut the roof to length but do not drill for vents.   These sides have very helpfully got etched droplights and WC window vents and so the new owne
