Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Engine Shed...which is NOT Malton!

Hello chaps   Just a quick update to say that I've finished my first engine shed.   Loosely based on or around Malton for our exhibition Layout "Hartburn Junction         For more information please look at http://sylviantennant.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/goodbye-dear-ladies.html   or   http://www.stocktonmrc.co.uk/   anyway, must be off, work and all sorts tomorrow

Wonderfulworldoftrains&planes

Fun for the family as new attraction launches in the JQ this year       An exciting new tourist attraction that will be popular with all ages is coming to the Jewellery Quarter this year.   Wonderful World of Trains & Planes – an interactive attraction – will open just off St Paul’s Square in the former Derwent Foundry building.   The attraction traces the history of trains and planes throughout the world. It has been designed to thrill audiences with cleverly created scenery chan

A little ray of sunshine

After months of foul weather a little bit of late afternoon sun in the summerhouse prompted a bit of loco posing. The P2 had managed not to disgrace itself at the Tonbridge MRC show (always a nice show!) and had performed almost without fault, doing as much time as Thomas on the Drive-it-yourself layout. Also posed the old Sunset A4 - this still bugs me as to whether this is the right colour - looks too grey to me and not silver enough, so I weathered it. Anyone know what the exact colour s

Back on the wagon

That is probably what I should be doing after the weekend (apologies for the poor spelling and unintentional smiley in the last post!), but have been playing with the little cart instead and now almost finished;     I need to tone down / weather the colour on the wheels and shafts and make a tarpaulin but apart from that it's done. All I need to finish the little cart scene is another horse and some sundries such as feed bags. Here is the mule that I did last night. Again a little toning do

Buffalo

Finally recovered from 10+ years of storage, this is a GWR Buffalo, built from the Alan Gibson kit. It has Romford wheels and a Mashima motor, but has never been run 'in anger'. Back in 2002 when I built her I had nowhere to run locos so I'm sure she'll need lots of fettling to run smoothly. I'll also need to convert her to DCC. She seems to have sustained some damage too, chipped paint, bent coal rails etc, but not too bad. (Crocodile / No. 36 will need lots of TLC before that see's the light o

Delph - New loco progress

Faced with the daunting task of laying the ballast, I've taken a break from the layout and have picked up a loco project which I started ages ago but didn't get very far. It is a Stanier (Ivatt!) Caprotti Black 5 based on a Comet kit. Previously, I'd built up the basic footplate and cab, but without the splashers, and soldered the frames together and marked out for the compensation beam pivots, but that's about it. Anyway, I've knuckled down over the past few weeks and now have a wheeled chassi

Tracklaying at Newport

At last some progress worth reporting. There were several steps forward and then backward over the Christmas break but at last the Medina is bridged, I've laid track over the baseboard joint into Newport and am now building and laying the track in Newport Station. The picture shows the non IOW loco I am using for testing. It is simply the most reliable small loco I could find in the local shop - it runs beautifully! The first turnout should be a three-way but I had already (by mistake) designed

Working Ground Signals.

These blogs are few and far between of late, still better late than never. Not the subject of base board legs predicted in my last blog but one which I’m sure you will enjoy.   Working ground dolls aren’t a necessity and probably not on most modelers to do lists. However on Dunster everything had to work so I set about making fully functioning ground signals from the ones supplied on the detail sprues in the GWR signal kits.   Having used the Ratio signals to great effect, I utilized their s

Empire Mill - Christmas Present rewheeled

Today I rewheeled and chipped my Heljan Railbus which was given to me at Christmas. It was a bit of a fiddle, why manufacturers make it so difficult to dismantle their stock to put chips in I'll never know. Having to remove the horns to get at the bolts and then prise the top off with a scalpel isn't my idea of fun. At least I'd purchased a 21-pin chip that just slotted in (once I got it the right way up). Rewheeling was fun too. The masak casting that forms the chassis (actually it is so heavy

Six-Wheelers - WIP Update

Since my last entry, I have been making slow progress with my coach construction. In fact, there has been a lot of trial and error, as I tried to find a way of incorporating printed sides from my Silhouette cutter.   I have not scratch-built coaches before, so had a lot to learn, for which the various posts by Mike Trice in the Silhouette cutter thread: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/79025-a-guide-to-using-the-silhouettecameo-cutter/?p=1278380 have been particularly helpfu

Wires, wires and more wires

Some of you may have been following Jon Fitness' signal topic and I am happy to say that the GWR signals he has just completed are for Fourgig East. As they are now ready I thought I'd better get the MERG control boards built. Today I fitted them, wired into the DCC feed from the handset - before the block cut-out, so they will still work even if there is a track short.     to the left of the pic you can see I have modified a Black Cat Tech LED dimmer to include 5 plug and socket connectors

The Neverwazza

Whilst I look for "City of Lincoln" name and numberplates (I've found the nameplates at Kings Cross Plates but can't find the numberplate at present), I've started on the Gorton mogul.   The first thing I had to do was cut 7mm off the firebox of the D11 boiler to get it to fit the 43xx frames.   I was then able to remove more metal (from the firebox top and the front end of the boiler, and the underside of the smokebox) to get it to fit over the motor in the 43xx (a massive metal lump...) Radleigh

Welcome to Radleigh!   This is my first go at a 'proper' layout since I was a lad, and I need to keep things realistic. I have little to no space for a permanent layout, so I didn't want to go bonkers - this is 1 foot wide by 5 and a half feet long. There will be a cassette fiddle yard at some point.   Track is Hornby, though I have used only Y-points and Express points to keep things looking smooth. Everything seems happy enough with the points btw - these are the newer kind with finer cros

A la Cart !

To anyone following the progress of this very minor part of my project the fact that I am writing about a cart means that a) I didn't go to the Shepton Mallet show, b)the weather was not perfect this morning and c) yes, I did have a hang over! That Valentine fellow has a lot to answer for! So, along with quality time with wife and child and a double gym session I have pretty much finished my little cart bar the painting. Here it is before under coat;     Very unusually for me I decided to u

Hogwarts coaches interiors #2

So I have now completed the first 3 coach interiors. Brake 99723, compo 99716, and open 99317. The only remaining things I need for these three are students and the Hogwarts Crest Roundels for each side. If any knows of a BSK and an SK for sale that is not weathered, please let me know. I'm struggling to find these last 2.

Parkside part 2

Have been to my 'local' modelshop and bought some copper wire. First I tackled the tarpaulin rail and then replaced the tie bars with copper wire. The plastic tie bars proved too flimsy:     While modelling I decided to change the build to Diagram O15. So I added a basic representations of the vacuum gear plus the missing DC III brake gear     Also added some much needed lead weight between the underframe scantlings (note to self: next time add weight before adding the solebars and a

Doubling Up

Last weekend my wife Sarah had a little moan about how she had not had much of a break recently. With my school workload and the recent house move pressures she was becoming very tired due to constantly looking after our 2 year old girl. She, quite clearly, needed a break - a few hours on her own to wind down and have some peace and quiet. After breaking up for the half term holiday yesterday I promised to take the little one out for a "daddy and daughter" day today. As it happened this weeken

Slater's O Gauge T34 Coach Finally Finished

Again, ahead of the Mansfield Show I've finished off the T34 that I built last year. The buffers were oil finished and fitted according to the instructions and two JLTRT screw-link couplings were put together and chemically blackened.   So here we have the first coach for Fourgig ready for the show.     It will have to run with a green Lima MKI for Mansfield, it's matching all third will be done in time for RMweb Live! in September ......

setting the (back) scene...

Evening all,   Two weeks have passed whilst I awaited a print to return (more on this shortly) coupled with some intense periods at work   Before I complete the fascia framing I had to redo the back scene. Not only had it faded badly but being paper, spray mounted onto a card former, it had also bubbled and delaminated.   Chris Nevard had suggested getting the image printed directly onto sticky backed plastic or onto 2 or 3mm foamex however after a little research, not many printers could

Ebay wins!- And a neverwazza

I don't like throwing money at my hobbies. There, I said it. To my mind there is always more satisfaction in building something that looks good and doesn't cost too much than there is in going to a store and opening my wallet.   So, for once I've surprised myself and spent some 'proper' money on myself and bought a few little beauties from Ebay. None of them perfect (that is probably why I got them at such a bargain price), but they'll do me.   First up we have a GCR 9F (LNER N5) 0-6-2

Phil Parker's Edgeworth.

As a returning modeller at the planning stage, can I ask Phil to excuse my ignorance when I enquire why he did'nt feel it necessary to use an accessory switch for polarity changing, and modify the electro frog wiring as in the Peco advice leaflet -is this not absolutely necessary? Thank you in anticipation, Jock.

Sorry Shepton

Yes, I am afraid that it is big apology to the Shepton Mallet narrow gauge show but I think it would be the wise decision not to venture south tomorrow. The wind is still howling around our ancient chimney pots (which luckily still seem to be in place), and the rain hasn't let up for hours. Coupled with this I did create a rather good Valentines special meal (with our little girl acting as waitress!), which seems to have involved rather a lot of fine beverage. As this has been lamentably absent

    • It's good to see so many positive reviews of a model railway exhibition. I did dabble in S4/P4 way back and Iain Rice's writings were inspirational. I saw Butley Mills when it was first shown at Scaleforum in 1987 and I loved it. Gordon Gravett's models are fabulous and I would love to see them in the flesh, as it were. I did visit two shows specifically to see the magnificent "Pempoul" layout that the Gravetts built, that was the finest I've ever seen. I'm dabbling in "O" Gauge and an opportuni
    • Good to see it was a positive experience - and really nice to see a couple of photos of Ditchling Green (I didn’t realise it was still around).  Always struck me as a lovely layout: an early example perhaps of the ‘less is (so much) more’ approach to railway modelling that is now widely appreciated.  Keep up the good work, Keith.
    • The layout and info display looks very good. Thanks for posting photos of the other layouts, always a gift for those of us abroad - especially when they are this good.   Imposter syndrome is common I think, it can hold us back but on the hand I'll take that over bragging anytime.
    • That sounds like a good approach Nick, thank you for clarifying. A sense of space is so important, less is more and all that.   The Penzance photo shows unloading of flower traffic from the Scilly Isles (no date). It features on the front page of this volume by Tony Atkins. The book is perhaps not unexpendable and a tad dry, but it is informative and some of the photos are lovely.
    • If only you'd brought some crossing timbers, we could have had them down too 🤣. It was a pleasure to be able to help!   All the best   Neil
