Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Beautiful Dioramas

I was using Stumble Upon tonight and it threw up this site with some beautiful pictures. Not railways, but a really good example of scenic modelling nonetheless.   Enjoy.   http://www.viralnova.com/takes-pictures-of-model-town/?_nospa=true

scalespeed update 2

Added another button to my speed calculator today. In this case it is a simple button to clear the table of results. The same could (and still can) be accomplished by just refreshing the page, but this is just neater.   http://www.entwinesolutions.co.uk/scalespeed

Table Lamps 00gauge

I am looking for some 00-gauge table lamps to kit out my three Hornby ex-LMS restaurant cars. Does anyone know of a stockist or manufacturer who would be able to help?

Whats on the Box? A new panel game...

Blimey, nearly a year since the last entry... However, the house refurbishment is finished (I'm writing this in the new study), I have a new (part-time) job and opened up a new enterprise - model-making (surprise surprise) (check out the FB page - https://www.facebook.com/PerfectionInMiniature ) ). Personal modelmaking has been somewhat limited, but it's time to get back to it. But what - there's so much unfinished business! So I'm starting at the smaller end - back to 2mm (this week, anyway)..

Photography for Recovery

Hello again!   As we're having splendid weather today, I elected to pack my camera once again and make another step towards recovery by way of another photo round. Today, I decided to have a look at the construction site on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße south of Leipzig's centre. This street is one of the more important traffic lanes in the south of the city, and is currently undergoing extensive renovation works including the road top, tram tracks, as well as the sewage and public water supply grid.

TIME FOR ANOTHER LOCOMOTIVE

The time has come to start another loco. Well, restart one I bought this kit some years ago. It was completely untouched. It came with a set of AJH wheels which I would of kept if it was for myself. Which I have swopped for Slaters. But being such a bargain at the time, I got enough for the wheels to buy the Slaters ones and cover the cost of buyiing the kit. I made a start on the kit not long after getting it. Looking at it there are a couple of bits to alter only because my condtruction methon

Updates to scale speed calculator

I've added some more features to the little scale speed calculator I've knocked together. It now calculates the average time and speed for all the runs combined, and to stop erroneous runs being recorded there's a cancel button that can be used after a run has been started.   http://www.entwinesolutions.co.uk/scalespeed   One tip I should pass on is that after you've clicked on the start button for the first time you can just use the enter key to start and stop runs. This will continue until

Prairie meets Hymek

Not much happening here lately, things tend to go in spurts, but there have been glimmers of progress in recent weeks. I had a fence in the foreground which for some reason didn't really work, although I couldn't quite say what it was about it that didn't click - maybe it was a bit too stark, perhaps. Anyway, browsing a model shop last week, I noticed some nice looking cotswold walling in the Hornby Skaledale range and wondered if that wouldn't do a better job. I bought a couple of packs (althou

Metrolink evening 3

Tonight was probably my last chance to escape to the shed this week so I made the most of it !   Things are going well, I would say "to plan" but that would suggest I have a plan!   Note that I am leaving the cabs for the time being as they are more Tricky   Oh and say hello to "pointing man" he is back supervising                 Yes the class 20 in a couple of the shots is OO, just to give you an idea of how giant this is !!

The space shuttle launches from Gerlos!

Well, after months of waiting, procrastinating and saving, it's here. Shiny, shiny!   O.K., it's black...   My Z21 has arrived and I went to collect it today, keeping my local train shop owner from his dinner...   So far so good (at least with the Z21), I had it wired up in no time, connected a multiMaus and had my Baby Castle running around in no time (using the Maus).   The router? Well Hmmmmm..... Kind of retro.... Not very clever, a piece of junk really.... I think I would have rathe

Gauge Decisions...

I've previously given which gauge to model some thought, when starting out again last January with a couple of small diorama's to get myself back into modelling. I'd toyed with the idea of going to EM but was a little put off initially, not thinking I'd be up to the challenge of re-gauging, or chassis building or all the other tasks finescale modelling presents, so I stuck with OO. That was a year ago now and I've gained some confidence in modelling, some good tools and a little more experience.

Turnout Operating Unit

Steady progress on Newport at the moment. I have finished wiring the Station throat board which has a scissors crossover and one other turnout. All fitted with Fulgurex Motors, and Sprat & Winkle electro magnets installed in strategic places. Most activity has been directed towards developing the method of installing the Fulgarex motors. I have read a number of criticisms of them, and I do now appreciate they are difficult to install - beginning with the need to completely ignore the "offici

Third bite: "The sidings"

I’ve slowly started work on the next layout in the Farthing series. “The sidings” are inspired by an interesting arrangement at the back of Gloucester Old Yard, where a headshunt served a series of kickback sidings that gave access to a variety of facilities: One siding served a private “biscuit” depot, another served the local waterworks, and finally there was a backroad to the loco depot’s ash sidings and coaling stage.           Above left is the overall la

Match-built Carriage Truck - 1

I had intended to wait until my carriage truck was complete, before writing another post, but various events have introduced delays, so here is a 'work in progress' report. . Some of my readers seem to like my 'off-beat' approach to modelling and this one also has some unusual features!   It all began when I saw a box of 'extra long' safety matches on the supermarket shelves. I had been looking at a drawing of an early wooden-framed carriage truck (1866) in Janet Russell's book on 'Gre

Adding DCC Sound and Lights to a Lima class 47

A tidy example of 47323 Rover Group was acquired some years ago. The spartan chassis of these Lima models means a decent amount of space to fit circuit boards, LEDs and a speaker. I finally got round to adding these goodies as the Winter evenings fizzled out.   Although covered elsewhere, I felt there were enough detail differences here to make a new write-up worthwhile.   Approach My choice of components was: Zimo sound decoder, following good experience with a cl

A neat solution

A neat solution of finest malt is what I really fancy right now but will have to make do with this instead. As a bit of light relief from head scratching and blowing up LEDs in pursuit of the perfect control panel I turned my attention to the problem of adding pickups to the Hunslet pony truck and came up with this of which I am rather proud! I am sure that all the N gaugers out there will think that I have plenty of room to play with here but it proved an interesting challenge for me. After sev

Its been a while !

Its been a while since I have had an urge to model, but after a trip on our new metrolink tram from Oldham to Manchester I started thinking ............     Of course, never one to do things by halves, my chosen scale is 1:24 (G)       I dont plan to have complete internals as I need all the integral cross braces as I can get at this size. If all goes to plan there will be limited details from seat level up, with everything below seat base hidden with a coat of matt black.   I coul

Major Road Delays and Train Cancellations Expected Part 2

More Progress On Station Road Bridge (16/03/2014)   After a lengthy delay I am pleased to announce some progress on the road bridge build. Part of the delay was determining the height of the station building above the tracks. The only known measurements were those taken from the footbridge. These were used to determine the floor level of the station by means of a 3D CAD Drawing.     Once this was produced i got slightly side tracked in producing this, however this will feature in another

East Grinstead show and LNER New Builds

Had a nice time at the East Grinstead show, managed to finish a small painting and have plenty of chats on railways and art etc. etc.. The sun came into the room nicely at the end of the day Saturday so grabbed a few pics and cheated a bit on the scenery with Photoshop..   I displayed three LNER locos and by co-incidence these are models of what three different groups are endeavouring to create full size, I hope they succeed!   Lastly on another site someone mentioned that streamlined l

March 16th - The Caravan Opens for 2014

Today I went to open up the caravan for the 2014 season. The site is closed from the end of October until 16th March. Tucked under the double bed is my Shillingstones Lane diorama that I'm looking forward to working on again as I extend to double the original length. Here is the first half, photographed back in June last year. Loads of green fields with bronze age barrow & other hidden shapes in a field. I have contemplated adding a simple roundy extension behind a high green hill to allo

Therapeutic Photography

Afternoon all...   Weather turned a bit for the worse over the weekend, but rather than locking myself up at home, I thought it'd be better for me to catch some fresh air, and to capture some early-spring impressions...   For starters, I stopped by at Westplatz where from today till 27 April, tram lines 3, 4, 7, 8 and 15 are re-routed due to road work on Jahnallee.     This "Großzug" led by T4D-M car 2175 had travelled down Friedrich-Ebert-Straße and was about to proceed across the West

Etched Plates or not?

There seems to be some confusion as to what constitutes ‘etched plates’. My understanding is that they are made from thin metal sheet, usually copper or steel, which have been dipped in an acid solution. Printing an image of the name or number onto the metal plate ensures that only the exposed or non printed areas of the plate are etched by the acid, leaving the original letters or numbers standing out in relief. Some early Jackson Evans Etched Plates I have been fitting etched plates to my

    • It's good to see so many positive reviews of a model railway exhibition. I did dabble in S4/P4 way back and Iain Rice's writings were inspirational. I saw Butley Mills when it was first shown at Scaleforum in 1987 and I loved it. Gordon Gravett's models are fabulous and I would love to see them in the flesh, as it were. I did visit two shows specifically to see the magnificent "Pempoul" layout that the Gravetts built, that was the finest I've ever seen. I'm dabbling in "O" Gauge and an opportuni
    • Good to see it was a positive experience - and really nice to see a couple of photos of Ditchling Green (I didn’t realise it was still around).  Always struck me as a lovely layout: an early example perhaps of the ‘less is (so much) more’ approach to railway modelling that is now widely appreciated.  Keep up the good work, Keith.
    • The layout and info display looks very good. Thanks for posting photos of the other layouts, always a gift for those of us abroad - especially when they are this good.   Imposter syndrome is common I think, it can hold us back but on the hand I'll take that over bragging anytime.
    • That sounds like a good approach Nick, thank you for clarifying. A sense of space is so important, less is more and all that.   The Penzance photo shows unloading of flower traffic from the Scilly Isles (no date). It features on the front page of this volume by Tony Atkins. The book is perhaps not unexpendable and a tad dry, but it is informative and some of the photos are lovely.
    • If only you'd brought some crossing timbers, we could have had them down too 🤣. It was a pleasure to be able to help!   All the best   Neil
