Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

A little Deutz

Couldn't resist this little 3D printed Deutz model when I ordered the Joffre a few weeks ago and have finally got around to sorting it out. Pretty straight forward really but as with most of these things ended up taking longer than I anticipated. So here we have the basic body with a 24mm Tenshodo moto bogie fitted. 24mm wheelbase gives you an idea of how small this actually is - would be small in 4mm but in 7mm...... Still, I have managed to fit a sound chip in without too much trouble;

More Gallic Goodness

While we're on the topic of lovely French models, here are a couple of Jouef 141R locos, both with superb sound and slow running.     These North American built locos were part of the lend-lease scheme, being essentially a scaled-down USRA light Mikado. I like the combination of influences in the design - they end up looking very purposeful, yet also compact. The Jouef models are really fantastic, right down to the open nature of the bar frames - there's a surprising amount of daylight in t

Welcome

Welcome to my slow-moving blog of my slow-moving project.   My plan is model the station, goods and. I real yards of the Miidleton Branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, in 2mm scale, as close to prototype as is absolutely possible given the space, time and budget available.   Whilst I'm calling the an LYR project, I'm actually probably going to set it in 1924. This allow me the luxury of using some LMS stock, which should get things rolling quicker than trying to stick entirely to

Original Hornby Model Cabinets

Hi,   First-timer here hoping for a little advice if at all possible. I have two original Hornby own model railway cabinets in my possession. They measure 180cm H / 120cm W / 45cm D. I understand they are fairly rare, were never made commercially available, and can find nothing of a similar nature online. They are both in excellent condition, bar a few very minor scuff marks.   I wondered if anyone would be kind enough to give me an idea of value, and whether anyone would be interested in pu

'Tannery Lane' - the Challenge has a name!

Right - it's 'Challenge Wednesday'. Since the last entry I've had my 'thinking cap' on (the pointy one which involves standing in a corner...). The main train of thought (aargh, PUN ) evolved along the lines of 'how can I get action into the scenarios?' First decision - choose a scenario. Okay Mikkel raised a good point - do the sewage works, drink beer (and provide them with the necessary?) However, the sewage works really didn't have too much operationally going for it. Coal & lim

Ride on a railbus

I must confess that today was the first time I've been to the Ribble Steam railway and it'll be 10 years old next year. I wanted to go and get some reference details from the substantial collection of industrial locos they have both steam and diesel.       Fortuitously there was a midweek operational day featuring the Waggon und Maschinenbau railbus which gave the chance to bring you a run along the length of the railway. It's slightly unusual to see a preserved railway within an urban e

LNWR Cole Hole is making progress

So quite a bit of progress recently, or at least it feels that way!   Comments, thoughts, questions, hints and tips are of course always welcome!   Anyway, here is what I have been up too...   Ive added another layer of brickwork to the long sides. As the corners will be viable i left them long for accurate trimming later...   This shows the extra length a little better...   I then moved onto the doorway, which I knew was going to be awkward! First i added the brickwork between

Clerestory Coaches for the Dukedog

I have just taken delivery of two 1980s era Hornby Clerestories. In good condition they have already received scale couplers but will need decent wheels and bearings, and some form of improved corridor connectors. These coaches were made in Margate and the quality of the printing, etc. is excellent.   The length of the coaches may be considered a bit over the top for the branch line but my excuse/reason for including them is that the Stratford based Dukedog, 3207, will run a twice daily serv

7410 - Test run at scratch built injectors

I'm back in Wales for a few days and to keep up the momentum of progress I figured I'd set myself a small project, something that doesn't take up too much space or need too many tools - making some injectors to replace the whitemetal ones with the NuCast 74xx. By the time I'd packed the reference books, tweezers, pliers, components, lamps, soldering iron etc I might as well have brought the whole tool box, but that's another matter.   Whitemetal kits and etched kits are completely new

Rolling stock continued

Done a bit more at 42355 Coal in the bunker Cylinder heads Char on the running plate.....got to get a bit off the sides of the frames. Quite pleased with the way that has turned out.   Still got to do the missed bit on the ends of the buffer beam.

GWR 850 CLASS (18)

Well, finally reassembled. All in all there where no problems getting it running.   The first job today was to fit the pickups, these are of the back scratching type made from some copperclad and phosphor bronze shim. It run very well on the rolling road and my short test track, the time spent sorting the washering of the gearbox paid dividends today.   The back head and floor where finished while the chassis was being run in. It also still worked when the body was screwed do

Prototype for Peco turntable kit

The prototype for the Peco Kit is the Cowans Sheldon 70ft preserved turntable at Yeovil Junction. The Yeovil turntable is Grade II listed:   http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1392981   Photos of the Yeovil turntable do reveal a common ancestry but Peco simplified the design of their kit.   Research into Cowans Sheldon turntables demonstrates a wide variation of detail with the same basic design being sold with manual, electric or vacuum drive. When it comes to pai

The Devil will make work....

I have terrible affliction in that I am totally unable to resist the temptation to start fiddling with things before the glue has fully set, or before the paint has fully dried on them.   To try and keep myself distracted from inappropriate fiddlings with the Baby Deltic yet *again* (having just had to remedy as uncured paint has rubbed off on my fingers) I have resurrected another project out of the unfinished box to keep myself occupied whilst things dry or set.   A while back I had starte

The Different Faces of Autumn – Spotting results Of October and November 2014

Afternoon all…   In today's post, I'd like to present you with the trawl of two different photo rounds which I did on 27 October in glorious autumnal sunshine, and today under an equally autumnal cloud ceiling. You will be seeing both railway and public transport photos, with the former having been taken at Thekla Station, one of my favourite venues for spotting freight services.       On 27 October, SBB Cargo's Re 421 390 was the first to roll in from the east, heading a container servi

On Foreign metals

French RTR at its exquisite best here, with this REE 231K ex-PLM pacific on "proving trials" at King's Hintock. Sound-equipped, and with pulsed steam (with emission controllable from both chimney and cylinders), it's a stunner of a model. I haven't tested the smoke yet, but it runs a treat on DCC.         Purchased as part of the long-term plan for a larger French layout, after testing the waters with Cogirep. With the new Roco and Jouef models of both steam, diesel and electric prototy

A Bulleid style 2 HAP with Ayjay Models body shells and Hornby 2 BIL chassis

Another new project started: a 2 HAP unit of the 5601 - 5636 batch built to the Bulleid style.   This is based on the Ayjay Models resin kit, bought through Radley Models. As I intended to use Hornby 2 BIL running units and chassis, I asked Phil Radley if he could sell me just the body shells and seat units. He very kindly did this and included the floor/chassis units as well as he wanted only the bogies for other uses.   Having adapted the same manufacturer's 2 HAL unit to the 2 BIL chassis

57xx/8750 - Research and Reference Photos

Whilst the NuCast 74xx build has taken up space on the workbench, I've still got the disassembled remains of 5726 which I began detailing back in March to finish. Much of what I've done to 5726 needs doing to 7410 and more so I thought it would be a good time to share some photographs of preserved Pannier's which helped with 5726. Tom Foster is about to start out detailing on his blog here, hopefully some of these pictures will be of use Tom As you'd expect many panniers passed through the

Turntable customization 1

The plastic handrails provided by Peco have two problems. First they are overscale. Second, they are brittle and easily broken. But the stanchions are OK, so my simple solution is to use the stanchions but use 0.70mm wire for the railings.   Here is a comparison:     This OK for one side of the bridge, but the other side now has a small extension for the electric control panel. The control panel box has yet to be sourced, but it will have approximate dimensions of 4' x 2' x 1-1/2' (H

GWR 850 CLASS (17)

Started on the rebuilding of the frames today.   Why do things that worked before stripping down fail to work on rebuilding? It is just so annoying. I was more fussy then usual with getting it all to work prior to painting.   The motor and gears now run smoothly again, with rewashering. The compensation needed a little tweaking to operate properly. The dummy valve gear to me looks good now it is painted and back inbetween the frames.       I di

The Q1 Tank Comes Alive... Almost!

It's almost finished. The pony truck has not actually been fixed on yet and there are still transfers to apply plus a few small finishing touches (the crew need some steps to actually be able to get into the cab I just realised!) but the Frankensteins Monster is almost complete!!     Still plenty of rough edges that show up in the cruel lens of my camera though!

Foster Street - Push-Pull Service on the Branch

Well what can I say, another marathon weekend of work finally over, even resulting in me visiting the office twice on a Sunday, I mean work on a Sunday!!!!!!   However today I manage to fit in a little modelling time, and buy little I mean hardly any, just enough time in fact to take out my soldering iron and successfully set my fingers alight (I am beginning to hate re-wiring the layout).   Being your typical tough northerner pain means nothing to me, so as I type this with still smoulderi

    • Thank you for leaving the comments and thoughts guys, much appreciated.   Both Butley Mills and Ditchling Green are with new owners that are currently refurbishing them. Even the modelling skill and composition still shine through, so they were both well worth seeing in the flesh. One of Iain Rice's layouts I'd like to get the opportunity to see is Trerice.
    • It's good to see so many positive reviews of a model railway exhibition. I did dabble in S4/P4 way back and Iain Rice's writings were inspirational. I saw Butley Mills when it was first shown at Scaleforum in 1987 and I loved it. Gordon Gravett's models are fabulous and I would love to see them in the flesh, as it were. I did visit two shows specifically to see the magnificent "Pempoul" layout that the Gravetts built, that was the finest I've ever seen. I'm dabbling in "O" Gauge and an opportuni
    • Good to see it was a positive experience - and really nice to see a couple of photos of Ditchling Green (I didn’t realise it was still around).  Always struck me as a lovely layout: an early example perhaps of the ‘less is (so much) more’ approach to railway modelling that is now widely appreciated.  Keep up the good work, Keith.
    • The layout and info display looks very good. Thanks for posting photos of the other layouts, always a gift for those of us abroad - especially when they are this good.   Imposter syndrome is common I think, it can hold us back but on the hand I'll take that over bragging anytime.
    • That sounds like a good approach Nick, thank you for clarifying. A sense of space is so important, less is more and all that.   The Penzance photo shows unloading of flower traffic from the Scilly Isles (no date). It features on the front page of this volume by Tony Atkins. The book is perhaps not unexpendable and a tad dry, but it is informative and some of the photos are lovely.
