Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Signals for Sherton Abbas part 2

During the time that I've spent pottering along doing my point rodding, as a bit of light relief I've been making progress with the signals that I need for the layout. In part 1 of signal construction http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/1131/entry-14441-first-signal-for-sherton-abbas/ I'd built the Platform Starter, but needed to tackle the construction of the Siding signal. Parts were once again used from the Model Signal Engineering range of components. I needed a signal to contro

The Red-and-Blue Bo'Bo': SBB Cargo Re 421 from Roco

Afternoon all…   In today's posting, I should like to present a model which took a lot of time and patience to obtain as it has actually been out of production for an extended period of time. Consequently, I had been particularly happy when I had, in fact, been able to obtain an example of Roco's SBB Cargo class Re 421 at my favourite Swiss retailer, Wemoba.     Those of you who follow the Swiss railway scene will most likely be aware of the Swiss Federal Railways having begun introducing n

An unusual wagon load

I started this entry about half an hour ago but thought I would try to find a proper copy of the image that inspired this and a little corner of the layout. Well, I didn't find the image I was after but did find loads of other stuff to distract me. Back to the subject. Have had this in mind for a while as an unusual wagon load and to have a go at getting the flavour of the scene. The stretchers and figure are white metal castings from PLM and the cross beams are from copper clad strip. I did try

Port Neen Cornish China Clay Branchline

I'm going to start uploading photos and talk about my China Clay branchline to "Port Neen". The scenario: A Cornish China Clay dries is the centrepiece of industrial life. A short branch line leads to a Harbour town called "Port Neen". In style, it is similar to Charlestown Harbour, Cornwall. The layout is designed to accommodate Western Region stock, from Steam to Diesel, and can be altered to represent 1920s Clay Workings all the way up to 1980s/1990s with CDA wagons and Silver Bullets. A pair of big spivs.........

.....or as they're more correctly known a pair of Blackpool Coronation tram bodies in 7mm scale.   One upshot of the recent WSF price changes was that I decided to try the Blackpool Coronation tram in 7mm scale, overall it's come out very nicely, Mark Hughes is going to re scale his etch and I believe Terry Russell is beavering away at 7mm PCC style trucks (one of these is for Terry....)   At just sub £100 they're not exactly cheap, but for a print of this size (approx 14 inches) I don't thi

Vosper Motor Torpedo Boat

next up for my layout was something for the harbour, i wanted a ship and instantly started looking at battleships, these where clearly far to large. so i decided on a vosper motor torpedo boat.   the Airfix kit was a great little kit to build, i would highly recommend this kit. i haven't really built any airfix kits since i was a child so this was a nice build.     this will be perfect i thought but, if i want my layout to be of exhibition standard then i need to go over the top on detai

Spotting in Dreich Conditions

Afternoon, everyone…   In spite of the unappealing weather that's come across Saxony today, I felt like trying to shoot another couple of photos in order to recover much needed strength. My offering for today but is something of a mixed bag of railway and tram images as poor lighting conditions weren't terribly suitable for my usual freight spotting location at Thekla.       ?At Bayerischer Bahnhof, the southernmost stop on the Leipzig trunk line tunnel, 1442 104 was taking on passengers

OMWB - 'Mitchell 44xx' (1)

Another project - but hopefully this will earn some much-needed cash eventually!   A couple of years ago I bought this - a half-built kit as an 'Executors Sale' at the Club. The big thing going for it is the running (beautifully!) chassis. However, as the image shows, there is a problem with the part-completed body (or the chassis, dependent on your point of view!) -     It appears that the power-train (a 'Portescap RG7') has been mounted incorrectly and sits too far back. First job will

Inspiration past and present or the ravings of an avid modeller

1974 meant training for an occupation, getting married and starting a layout....I think that`s in the right order of priority!!! Was`nt possible to go to exhibitions so books and magazines was the norm for me. Lack of space meant N guage on the back of an old door!! Get something running quickly........   Real inspiration began with dragging my family to the venerable Didcot Centre, equipped with my Zenith SLS camera...remenber those cheap Russian imports??. First shot of a real loco.... 19

Tannery Lane - a little evening project

It's Wednesday - and I actually found myself with a couple of spare hours.. So I thought I'd build the wagon turntable giving access to the tannery...   Take a piece of 080" plastikard, scribe a circle to the relevant diameter (I used 80mm/20ft), and open out the centre-pop hole (this will become the mounting point) and draw in centre-lines at rightangles.. I then printed off a section of straight track in Templot on adhesive paper, cut two 80mm lengths from it, took out centre 'inspection p

The Stairs and Drop down Platform of the LNWR Coal Hole

So the fiddly bits! I really enjoy making things like these, proving to myself what is possible with Plasticard and my limited skill set.   So to begin with a little set of concrete stairs. Pretty easy to make, just quite small. I start with the sides, remembering to take off the the thickness of the plasticard for the tread and riser so that I don't end up with a staircase 1mm further forward or higher than I intended   These are to give you an idea off the size of this little thing, and

3F stripped!

Research RMWeb and you will find lots of advice concerning the removal of pad printed details on modern RTR products. In this case the Bachmann Midland 3F 0-6-0.   People can get quite heated over what to use and what not to use. To be fair, the latter are remonstrating against those techniques that could cause lasting damage to a plastic model.   Anyway, I decided upon the IPA (Isopropyl alcohol) method which can be time consuming and therefore prone to a "hurry up and spoil" result. Loco Clinic

Am now in the last few days before the layouts second outing (Weston on Trent on Saturday), and compared to the mad panic and VERY late nights before the first one, things are positively serene here! I guess I have not been completely idle in the last two months and most of the niggles have been sorted but have finally got down to sorting out some of the loco issues. Simple one today was to tidy up the sound installation in the second open 40hp Simplex which was long overdue. Sorry not managed a

A Stratford Midland 3F

During the 1930s the staple locomotive power on the S&MJR appears to have been the Midland 3F 0-6-0 and several were allocated to the Stratford Old Town shed. As we have come to expect, Mike Musson's warwickshirerailways.com has plenty of evidence of various locomotives but generally the actual numbers are not legible on the older photos. There is one:   http://warwickshirerailways.com/lms/smjsa77.htm   which shows several 3Fs on shed. The one to the right matches the Bachmann model,

The Spottings of Autumn in the Saxon Lands

Afternoon all...   While I am still recovering, I keep telling myself that spending time outside and for things which to people like us on here will most certainly be highly agreeable. Consequently, I again have a series of photos from two spotting rounds to my favourite freight spotting location at Thekla Station which I have been on yesterday and today.       Yesterday, rail traffic was still in the middle of getting under way after the large scale strike of last week, also necessitati

Not in Honley Tank

I've hardly been in the workshop in the last week or two; I've been scrabling about on the computer and spending a lot of time on the web.   Not quite as wasteful of time as one might think because I've been reading about CAM - computer aided modelling! Mr Christmas (Margaret) arrived early with a computer driven cutter and it has produced bits of immaculately scribed and cut styrene sheet which MEK allowed me to weld together; the result is:- Not too bad for a first attempt and using pre

The Warley Show

For the first time since being back in modeling I find myself with a ticket for the Warley Show, 10 days from now. I have usually been working in Africa during the past few years but this year I am not, so Birmingham NEC here I come! I have been told that the show is very crowded, but with so many opportunities to meet vendors, see demonstrations and (probably) spend money, the crowds hopefully won't put me off.   So I have been making a list of traders I want to visit and hope that they may

Positive Switches - Peco solenoids and CDUs an update

A few weeks back I posted some thoughts on the need for and the use of Capacitor Discharge Units (CDUs) with Peco solenoids. I reported that after some thirty years of model train operation I had now installed my first Capacitor Discharge Units. Under baseboard Gaugemaster Capacitor Discharge Unit At the time I did not see a great improvement in point operation. In a couple of cases the operation was worse after installing the CDU than previously with the power supplied directly from 16v aux

Emsford Mill - Nearly there...

Finally - after 4.5 years, the mill is nearly done! I doubt the original took this long!   First job for this session was to complete the last 12 window units in the rear wall. However, before the wall itself could be added, the gable end window had to be built and placed -     This really was the LAST window of over 50...   Next job - the mill owners house required a front door. Being (probably) the richest person in the village after the squire the door had to reflect the family's

    • Thank you for leaving the comments and thoughts guys, much appreciated.   Both Butley Mills and Ditchling Green are with new owners that are currently refurbishing them. Even the modelling skill and composition still shine through, so they were both well worth seeing in the flesh. One of Iain Rice's layouts I'd like to get the opportunity to see is Trerice.
    • It's good to see so many positive reviews of a model railway exhibition. I did dabble in S4/P4 way back and Iain Rice's writings were inspirational. I saw Butley Mills when it was first shown at Scaleforum in 1987 and I loved it. Gordon Gravett's models are fabulous and I would love to see them in the flesh, as it were. I did visit two shows specifically to see the magnificent "Pempoul" layout that the Gravetts built, that was the finest I've ever seen. I'm dabbling in "O" Gauge and an opportuni
    • Good to see it was a positive experience - and really nice to see a couple of photos of Ditchling Green (I didn’t realise it was still around).  Always struck me as a lovely layout: an early example perhaps of the ‘less is (so much) more’ approach to railway modelling that is now widely appreciated.  Keep up the good work, Keith.
    • The layout and info display looks very good. Thanks for posting photos of the other layouts, always a gift for those of us abroad - especially when they are this good.   Imposter syndrome is common I think, it can hold us back but on the hand I'll take that over bragging anytime.
    • That sounds like a good approach Nick, thank you for clarifying. A sense of space is so important, less is more and all that.   The Penzance photo shows unloading of flower traffic from the Scilly Isles (no date). It features on the front page of this volume by Tony Atkins. The book is perhaps not unexpendable and a tad dry, but it is informative and some of the photos are lovely.
