Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

LNER V1/3 2-6-2 TANK (5)

Whilst scratching my head, I thought I ought to do something.   I made up the brake gear, this was fairly straight forward but quite basic. I will be adding some plastic to the rear of the shoes, one to give them some thickness and to insulate from the wheels.         Now back to the problem in hand. I needed to remake the cylinders. I marked out the new ones on a couple of bits of 0.030" brass. once cut out I made up a u shaped spacer and new wrapp

Shipston Re-united

I arrived back at our apartment in France before noon (interesting journey, but this morning's drive from Issoire was quite magical across a cloudless Massif Centrale).   I vowed to just unload the car but in the end capitulated and gapped and filled some track in my French workshop, a loggia facing the setting sun. How very pleasant it is to work outdoors. I understand from the most unbelievable Met office that the UK is in for 3 months of good weather and I hope that is true. However, hav

Time for Plattenbau!

Afternoon, everyone…   As you will see, I did not just leave it at merely thinking about hitting the rails with my camera! (Yes, both it and the rails are still in one piece, just to preempt any possible punning… ) I but will admit that the "Plattenbau" housing blocks suggested by the title will not be the single dominant topic, actually.   I first rode out to the sizeable reversing loop at Paunsdorf-Nord in the east of Leipzig. The loop itself, set such that it connects both to Line 8 and

Meetings, Planning, and Teaching

Yesterday we had our first official layout group meeting. Probably should have done it sooner, but better late than never. In this we discussed follow up from Ally Pally, things that went well and things that didn't. We also covered what needs to be done before our next outing (Portsmouth in November) and who is to do what. Up until now the layout has gone in the back of a 7.5T truck with other stuff/layouts for AP, but this has to change. We had originally intended to have the layout fit in the

Sproston - a flying whatsit thingy in the loft now!

Hello again- after the recent' mystery of the blog with the missing photos',- we returned from visiting our relations down in Kent for a couple of days to find we now have a 'flying whatsit thingy' in the loft, this has now been identified as a VERY big angry wasp... All railway activities have immediately ceased - and a hasty retreat ensured... Plans are now being formed to evict said angry wasp - preferably without harming either me or itself!!   During this lull in operati

Treading Water

Treading Water   Been busy with other things, so not much happening on the model rail front.   A4 update:   Well, the degreaser finally broke through that black paint, so I scrubbed most of it away. No sanding marks - all looks good. Another soak and scrub and she should be ready for a repaint.   So, where should I go with this?   Just a repaint in BR green with numbers and linework? Get a whistle and some etched nameplates? [both missing on this unit] Try and detail it up? althou

Cheddar - time for an update

Well it's been a few weeks since my last confession, so I thought I'd post an update. It's quite useful seeing where I was at the beginning of March because to me progress is glacial. When I look back at the last entry I can see that I've done more than I realise! Board 8 (the one at the Wells end of the layout) has seen the contours formed with a mixture of foam board and one strike light weight filler from my local diy emporium (Proper Job - other retail outlets are available) which can be a

O Gauge - Heljan Class B Mobil Tank Screw Link Coupling

Well this arrived after a Regent and three Esso versions and very nice they are too... They have a good heft, the bearings are all sprung, have nice screw link couplings - However the hooks were designed almost identical to the prototype and are thus a bit awkward to use.. They might need their points fettled to increase the gap to improve their ease of use.     The other day I noticed an end link from a screw link coupling upon the floor of the train room (in and of itself a miracle) U

‘B’ Set Couplings and Colours

The ex GWR ‘B’ Set Airfix model coaches date from 1975. Almost forty years later and the coaches reappeared as Hornby R4293. The coaches must have proved popular and in the intervening years similar models have been available first from Mainline and later Dapol. Bachmann 9017 on Airfix ‘B’ Set passing Hornby Crimson ‘B’ Set The ‘B’ Set coaches were operated in pairs. As fitted with standard Airfix (or Hornby) couplings the gap between the coaches is hugely too large. Original Airfix/Hornb

Small crates and tea chests

I’ve been making my own crates and tea chests from printable veneer. Today I installed them in the goods depot at Farthing.         The mezzanine floor at Farthing was used as a storage facility. Traders could have their wares stored while awaiting dispatch and distribution.         Space was literally at a premium, and this floor was always tidier and more well organised than the busy decks below.

A row of Victorian cottages – part two

The starting point.     Last time I have made the final design for my row of cottages. Now I had to build the frame of the cottages using Scalescenes kit 022 Small Cottages.   In an article which compares the living circumstances in working class cottages in the 1950’s and the 1970’s is the following description about a working class house in the 1950’s: “Along with the strong imposition of categories and relationships in a working-class house, there is strong insulation of rooms from e

Layout in two scales, two countries

Greetings from the wilds of Southern California. I have had the great misfortune of being bitten by both the 4mm GWR bug and its very distant cousin, the American On30 bug. During my service in the US Army, I made many trips between Germany and the UK and in the process collected a considerable amount of OO scale GWR locos and rolling stock, as well as a lot of scenery items, in the hope of one day building a nice "little" West Country branch line layout. Fast forward to the present day, when no

Track building almost complete!

A quick update to say that my brief stay in England has allowed me to progress the track building and most of its is at least soldered if not gapped and primed. This coming week I return to France and will start on module 3 so that track laying can begin on the scenic part of the layout.   I quick word of thanks to Martin Wynne and Templot for providing his software to take the strain out of track planning and building. That it even works on my Mac (with Crossover) makes this all the more sa

kyle 2015 - absolutely van-tastic...

Evening all,   Quick update on progress around Easter - my recently returned turned down wheels were reinserted and after a second period of running in on the rolling road the locos were tried on the layout - some fettling was required to the two turnouts so the bare solder may be visible in some pics below prior to getting retouched in with a paint brush.   With most of the big tasks for scenery, lighting and wiring undertaken my attention has now turned to the rolling stock. My primary aim

LNER V1/3 2-6-2 TANK (4)

Well managed to do some with this the last couple of days, but with interruptions and problems with the kit it has been hard to make progress.   It seems that each bit needs thinking about. Maybe once I have the frames done I may find it easier to get enthused in the build.   I have almost finished the footplate, which when done I can start the body, but more over I can check the frames which will need quit a lot of checking.       Niggling things ar

SPROSTON - where we're at now...

Hello again, well the weather is warming up nicely - and so is my loft, as a result things are moving once more. My latest acquisition being a Bachmann 64xx PT in BR green, number 6412 a very nice loco and runs sweetly, just needs something suitable to pull now! (the Hawksworth autocoach in BR maroon - come on Bachmann......The local coal merchant in Sproston has changed hands recently, it is now owned by Mr Trevor Richard Compton, and he has brought himself an additional lorry (Austin k2) -to go

A prototype for anything

Firstly an apology for the poor quality of the pics today. I was not going to take my big camera but had intended to take the decent little one but...... so, this is the best my phone could manage. But what a day to forget the camera! Just couldn't resist the weather forecast and it being school hols got up horribly early and zoomed off to Snowdonia for the day. It was meant to be a walking up the mountain day (which little Iz and I did via the ranger path in really good time and beautiful weath

LBC Hants & Dorset Bristol MW Almost Finished

Well, the Little Bus Company Hants & Dorset Bristol MW has taken another step towards completion. I filled the ragged edges on the driver's side headlight and touched up the paintwork there.   I have put the grille, Bristol 'wings' badge and fleetnames on, leaving just the registration numbers and destinations to add, plus painting in of the tail light clusters.   The photos show up a few ragged paint edges rather cruelly, but overall it doesn't look too bad. I will try to fix up the wor

"Read Me First"

(the following explanation is intended to help any new readers to find their way around this blog)   Since I started this blog in 2013, I have used it as a diary to record my progress in creating a Victorian GWR branch line. Since the blog follows the meanderings of my mind, it has no real structure and this 'introduction' is, therefore, an attempt to help a new reader to find his/her way around.   There are two main strands: firstly, the documenting of my exploration of the

Good Intentions

This posting should have been called New Year's Resolutions but that posting was cancelled due to a shortage of serviceable rolling stock and delays to the inbound service.....   I'm still trying to clear the decks of projects started last year, before starting anything new . However one small project - a rework of an old Mainline GW Mink to supply a van for parcels tail traffic for the steam stock - has slipped through the net and is now at the weathering stage.     Still outstanding is

Poor decision

I managed to get my self talked into obtaining a hand held PICtrollerfor Lambourn, to replace the original AMR hand held.   It works great on Farish (Poole) mechanisms, but is frankly hopeless with coreless types.   Nothing wrong with the controller, so I'll not return it, but not really a happy buy ????
