Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

LNER V1/3 2-6-2 TANK (11)

Finally done a part that I have been putting of since I started the body build. For some reason I was dreading doing the centre cylinder covers,   I suppose it stems from the fact the etching on the footplate for them was wrong, and the cast ones also supplied bore little resemblance to the real thing. I now just need to finish the steam pipes. These also needed to be remade, I am about half way through them.         You will also see the boiler has been

One week on...a few ideas.

Sorry, no photos yet. Decided to kitbash the twin and spent a while considering what to do to make an entry/exit to the fiddle yard. Windows are in and removed a few for doors. Door frames are in and I'm working on a dock. Windows that were too low have been bricked up.   A major decision to split the front vertically to make a lower-relief facility didn't pay off so well, and I'm worried it simply looks like half the building is missing. I think a change of roof should solve this now though.

Facia boards and languages

Each module needs a facia board as well as a back "scenic canvas".   If I was in England I would ask for hardboard, while in the States it is known by its brand name Masonite. It is also sometimes called HDF. Wandering round several bricolages in France I could not find any on display, which is usually the quickest way to source something. In this case, however, I simply didn't see any hardboard at all.   And how do you ask for something if you don't know what it is called?   Well, of c

Bristol Fashion

No modelling to report from this weekend due to going away for a few days but just because I didn't physically do anything didn't mean I didn't have mu modelling hat on! A couple of days in Bristol gave plenty of opportunity to photograph various details and buildings that will go into the 'put aside for future inspiration' folder. We were actually very impressed with the city, both with the amount of stuff going on (a lot of it free!), and the gems of architecture hidden away. What really did i

A row of Victorian cottages – part three

The starting point.     Last time I had finished the frame for my row of cottages I intended to build the front of the cottages. But after some thoughts I decided to start with the roof, because there were some parts that needed some extra attention. I wanted separate roof sections but no separate fronts as in the Scalescene kit.   The tiles are printed on a high quality drawing paper, of course on the best possible settings. I tried to create some old roofs, because these cottages will

EF66's Big Sister: Renfe Mercancías Series 251 electric locomotive

Morning all!   The locomotive we are going to look at today will probably appear strikingly familiar to anyone following the Japanese railway scene, highlighting the multitude of influences the Spanish railways took on in the post-1945 era.   As indicated previously, the motive power inventory of Renfe in the post-war period was characterised by various procurements from foreign locomotive builders due to an initial lack of independent development capacities for designs matching the establis

LNER V1/3 2-6-2 TANK (10)

Just a small update and a question.   Here is the motor and Roxey 26-1 gearbox. You will see the adapter plate as the motor mounting holes are too far apart for the gearbox, also there is a rather large phosphor bronze bearing. Now the Question What is this motor and where can I get some more. 40Long 24 across flats 28 diameter.         I have got on with the cab, adding something to the front. I must admit I got the ideas from the DJH photo's on their we

SPROSTON- putting up fences

As usual leaving all the difficult bits till last, I have finally had to give in to the inevitable,- and have 'bit the bullet' so to speak - I have been busy putting up all the lineside fencing on the layout. I decided to use black fine 0'05mm 'EZ-LINE' from the states .www, berkshire junction.com (Berkshire junction ,p.o box 205,Adams,MA 01220) held in place with superglue onto Ratio GWR 423 lineside fencing, with the posts spaced at 1" intervals and glued into holes drilled in the board, b

Bits and Pieces

I've had the layout up for a few days, and as well as a couple of operating sessions, I've taken the opportunity to sort out various jobs , as someone is slated to come and see it...   The big one is that at long last the station building has been finished off, with an end, back wall and door, and the "bomb damage" is no more. Quite deliberately the effect is that a section has been taken through the building - rather than paint the back wall black , I used some Superquick red brickpaper - thi

Layouts, do they breed?

Hi all,   What a crazy time it is at the moment, as soon as i finish items then they seam to be replaced with two more, coupled with a few site visits and a trip to the deep south I'm not sure where the month went.   Its been a busy month with layout work and to kick off we have a layout that came to me for wiring. Now there was already wiring on the boards but it was very poorly done and not working properly so out with the cutters and the old stuff was removed and then replaced. A lot easi

Finally!

Hah, I bet you all thought that this project was dead and buried!   Truth be told, I did as well, after being seduced by 7mm scale and shiny technology, oh, and cars. However, of late I've worked out why the layout wasn't really progressing - I find track building and wiring incredibly boring and, seeing as I don't have to do them, and there are many other interesting projects to spend time on, I haven't. I considered ripping up what I'd already done and building a small 7mm layout instead, bu

Japanese by Nature: Renfe Mercancías Series 269.7 electric by Electrotren

Afternoon all!   Our subject today will be another of those locomotives which Renfe obtained from Japan, at a time when Spain as a whole was still faced with varying levels of political reservations due to the authoritarian Franco regime.   First procured in 1973 and indeed produced until 1985, well after democratic rule had been restored to the country, the Series 269 electric locomotives have been one of the most versatile types to have been procured by Renfe, and put to use for various ty

Bit of a mish mash

Evening all One of the nice things about our hobby is we can decide to do something completely different if the mood takes us, so in a break from layout building I decided I needed to build some whitemetal wagons. A fruit C/D and Southern Open from David Geen and a diag AA16 (I think) brake van) from D&S I've had lurking in the cupboard for a while. As they're all P4 I decided they needed some form of compensation or springing. In the end the brake van is compensated using the

The ex GWR ‘B’ Set - Continued

My last Post discussed the merits of various proprietary couplings that could be used to close the gap between two B Set Brake Composites. Sometimes the solution is so obvious that it gets overlooked. I should thank Nergle for his comment and for pointing me the in right direction. Close Coupled B Sets, Airfix back, Mainline front A search of the Internet points to an old blog from Tim Venton currently with a work bench thread on the Scale Four web site. Ruston Research, trip to the North Ings Farm Museum

I realized that I needed to get some better photographs of the engine of the Ruston LAT that I'm trying to build and, as the one which was at the Threlkeld quarry museum had moved, I decided a trip to the North Ings Farm Museum http://www.northingsfarmmuseum.co.uk/museum/ was required. My family refer to this particular organization, very unfairly, as 'The chicken sh*t farm' because the line was originally installed to move 'waste product' from poultry sheds. Don't be put off by the sound of it,

GWR Clerestory all third

Here's a little something I knocked up during a spare few hours over the weekend...       If only! It's actually a pre-made Mallard models kit for the corridor clerestory all third, and was bought second hand from Lord & Butler at their stand at the Bristol show. There's a label on the bottom with what I take to be the builder's name on it, Peter Bradley of Taunton, and a build date of 1993. It's constructed and painted to a very high standard, with a superb rendition of the fully li

LSWR stone wagon

I’ve always been fascinated by this old photo, which is reproduced in Matthew Bagnet’s “The Railways of Farthing” (not sure about copyright, hope it’s OK).         This enlargement (apologies for the poor quality) shows the presence of some interesting "foreign” wagons at Farthing, including an MSWJR 3-plank open and an LSWR one-plank stone wagon. I’ve already modelled the former, so I thought I’d do the LSWR wagon as well.         So

kyle 2015: bank holiday mc'rats...

Afternoon all,   Work has been plodding away on the layout of late but haven't had time to do an update so thought I would take the opportunity this b/h weekend.   I had made a mini target programme of activities for Feb/Mar/Apr and May but this has now been converted into a final 'to do' list as the exhibition is two weeks yesterday   This update concentrates on rolling stock, particularly locos which span the eras. I have been doing some research and found pics of Kyle of all locos mode

First Loco Test - with Video

Now that all four modules are joined together and in position, I decided to check the running between two modules. This join was made after the track was laid on each side, so is a real test of the alignment accuracy.   I used the new Bachmann Earl 3027 which will be part of the GWR roster. This is out of the box, run in and with scale couplers and brass number plates added. I rigged up enough wiring to cross the module join and set the Dynamis DCC controller to 3027.   I then tested everyth

King Edward VII redux- GCR 8D, Part VI

I'm happy to say that, aside from a couple of details, 'King Edward VII' is now finished as (s)he appeared for six months in 1924.   Much of the last week has been spent getting the tender painted and lined to my satisfaction and I think it is just about there.     Now for the next project...

Garage finished

So here it is, the garage finished and planted on the layout, surrounding dirt is still a bit dark as PVA still not quite dry yet. But how did we get to this state? I left off last time with all the walls in place but no floors or roof. These were made from balsa sheet cut into strips with my much used Master Airscrew balsa stripper - an invaluable tool. I didn't bother drawing up any plans for this building as everything was just done by eye. Here we have one of the floorsbeing made up by layin

NCE Switch8 and PSX incompatability?

I have set up a PSX-4 for track sections and all appeared to be fine, I then bought another PSX unit and attached my NCE Switch 8 and Tortoise point motors. These NCE Switch-8 units were working fine with the Lenz LZV100 and LH100. As soon as I installed the PSX the NCE Switch8 ceased working.   I set up on my test bench a new set of kit to see if the problem could be resolved but as soon as I put the PSX unit into the circuit the new Switch8 ceased working.   I reset the NCE Switch8 to no
