Post dissertation workbench progress..

Postby craigwelsh » Mon May 07, 2007 12:36 am

I haven't updated my workbench thread since the last forum as I haven't frankly done much in a while due to writing up my dissertation and being home in Cardiff for a short period.

Anyway, my 14xx is slowly progressing. Inside motion is now finished and the detail parts have been added. Brake gear is drilled an will be fitted when i'm not drunk, tired or actually doing some revision!

Something I did pick up on when comparing what i'd done with the pictures of 1450 taken at Norchard is that the guard irons as High Level show them are backward compared to the real thing. See http://1450.fotopic.net/p33876100.html and http://1450.fotopic.net/p33876207.html - High Level show the curve towards the rear. Opps, i've fixed the rear ones but not the fronts yet. It took me enough burnt fingers the first time around!

Hopefully a body will turn up for this on the 2nd attempt by the Royal Mail and I can then think about how to do the pickups. Not sure about this yet as this is my 1st chassis that isn't rigid.

Also on the workbench is a large batch of stuff that I bought off ebay.

An Airfix BR brakevan with separately fitted hand rails. This has had the roof thinned down by me but it needs everything swapping sides as Airfix modelled a mirror image of the roof. The underframe is a bit of a mess and the P4 wheels don't turn well. Possible a case of replace with a Bradwell etch, it certainly needs springing at any rate.
Image
A lot of minerals were also acquired. All Parkside kits, 4 of them standard and 3 riveted. The fake Parkside loads have been unglued and shortened to lower them so real coal can be stuck on top. They will need the boiling water treatment as they have bowed inward. Some of the brake gear is also fitted backwards and will need fixing. Spring buffers are also to be fitted (and I have drilled all the way through at 1mm on most already, doh!).
Image
Some of the minerals have a rather poor method of springing. Pinpoint bearings are vertically slack and wipers push on the wheels. Doesn't work and i'll need to properly spring or try to lock the bearings level.
Image
The seller gave me a free sheet of Modelmaster transfers, which was a bonus and these will be fitted after a repaint.

Also among the items was this nice little Airfix Rocket with Maygib wheels. It would probably move well too if the wheels were quartered and not halved!
Image

And lastly, a view of my bedside table showing the stock in progress(that fits on the table...) and lining up for the paint shop, may be a bit of a batch process!
Image

I need to work on some merchandise wagons to balance this lot out. A Macaw converted to P4 would also be nice.

I've also realised i'm running out of Parkside catalogue and they need to make some more kits ;)

Everybody loves dissertations!
..... OK, that was so blatantly false that even I can't keep a straight face.

At first glance, I thought that open wagon was carrying rice pudding. I blame being exhausted.

Can we see that Rocket next to something a little more recent, for comparison?

That chassis is amazing! Lovely work.
Michael.

Oh for the days when steam ruled and coal was king.

That 14XX chassis looks superb, Craig. Given that I am from the Mr Blobby school of soldering, I can only admire your neat handiwork.

Here is my High Level Chassis upside down to show brake gear and pickups. I have not got that much further as I am still awaiting castings, I hope to see Mr. High Level next week at Expo.

Here is my High Level Pannier chassis, which will go under another 97XX condensing pannier tank. Not as far advanced as my 14XX but this one I have modified this chassis to be sprung rather than compensated. Although trying to figure out how to fit working springs on the front axle between the sidebars and frames is proving tricky, but I think I have a solution, if you ask Mr. High Level nicely he will provide you with the etched spring mounts to the axleboxes that can be seen in the photo.

Don't worry, i'm from the "oh Bo****ks, where's the solder removal braid.." school myself. I've also given some bits a good going over with a glass fibre pen (including my fingers :( ).

Today i've managed to sort out the steam and hand brake levers under the cab and made up the brake shoes. I'm now on a hunt for some more .5mm wire as High Level seem to have supplied mostly .4 or .45 and my holes are a bit big for that. Still haven't turned the front guard irons around though.

Thanks for the pics and info David. Expo was my thought on questioning about the castings although i'm not sure if I really want to drive down from Manchester as its nearly 3hrs.

The Pannier also looks excellent and I want to buy one soon although wheels will take me a while to obtain! I need to get up close to the preserved 94xx and see how the frames are extended and what other detail differences there are and if I could use the High Level chassis. If not the chassis would go under a Bachmann 8750 I have.
Not sure about springing, I did also see the 14xx on the CLAG website. I've got on quite well with the compensation so i'm not sure if I need to bother with springing.

Finished the brake gear now, just the pickups to sort out and then to see how long the white metal castings are going to be. A couple of spacing washers need to be reamed out to avoid the coupling rods hitting some very small brake hanger details I added as well. I do have to watch I don't leave it on any sort of gradient as it will just roll off without the motor in place!
Image

Arty low down shot.. I really do need to turn those guard irons around, need to point that out to High Level too.

Looking good Craig (if a little South Western for my tastes!). Are the wheels Ultrascales?

Nice work David - how long has this taken you so far? (I have one waiting....)

Sorry to hi-jack your thread Craig - your 14XX chassis is also very good - and I like your description of which School of Soldering you attended (I was there a year or two before you! )
‘I suppose Kernow might want to know why I didn’t ask permission to leave the ship. Anyway, never mind about that, the Bodmin coach leaves in an hour’. Archie collected their bags and they quietly left the little tavern, which had been their home for the last few days. But little did they realise that a Prussian grenadier called Horst was quietly watching them from behind a pair of beer barrels

Its actually going to be South Wales based as a couple were at Newport (1421 I have a picture of) into the late 50's. Colour photos of this loco would be great as it appears to be overall BR black..

The wheels are indeed Ultrascale and came from Ebay about 3-4 years ago for a few pounds, thought "I may find a use for them if I go P4" at the time..

Thanks for backing up my soldering school Cap'n ;). Hijack away as its useful info for me too! I do hope David won't be buying an 03 shunter too though as I want to do something he hasn't done :P...

Have you done your 14xx yet Cap'n, I believe you had one?

I intend on undercoating the brakes on my 14xx soon as these are a separate piece. Need some phosphor bronze for pickups.

I'd already started the Perseverence chassis when the High Level one was announced, so mine is running on that, and quite happily as well, I might add, although for a future job the High Level chassis would be first choice.

Ah ok, must have been the pannier where you mentioned High Level and I got confused.

Today I tidied up the soldering on the 14xx brakes and decided to have a go at the tie bar on the point i've had sitting around for over a year!

Thanks to LisaP4 for the method and Junko-Zane for the tie-bar material. The fixing for the Tortoise isn't permanently before anyone asks... The check gauge through the switch is a bit tight and I might gauge widen any more 'A' switches I build and increase the movement of the blades.
Image
The missing slide chair has now been re-glued and I haven't needed to put washers on underneath as Lisa did yet as the web between sleepers holds the tie-bar in place. Works well under power too.

My loco has a body! Thanks to SP Steve and the Royal Mail's second attempt at delivery..
A bit of material from under the boiler and smokebox has been removed to fit the chassis but its sitting perfectly now and doesn't affect running. Bufferbeam heights are correct although my track laying isn't too good for the picture!

Very nice, quite tempted to get one of those kits at one point and actually make something with the random GW stock i have lieing about....

Shouldnt a post disertation workbench be covered with revision notes for finals though :P

I know mine is :( Finals revision and a genesis kit. unfortunatly the former is more fun.....

Erm, don't you mean the latter?

The revision notes are blue tacked to the walls, two are full to far, more square footage than layout coverage.. A lot of them are audio format from the recordings of others when I missed lectures.

Another quick picture, much nicer seeing the motion than a bit of chassis block between the frames.
